In a recent interview, Bee Frederick of Safari Club International (SCI) discussed the return of Florida black bear hunting. Florida has a long history of managing its black bear population through regulated hunting seasons and conservation efforts. Legal bear hunting ended in 1992 but briefly returned in 2015. It was paused again due to public backlash. Now, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is considering a quota-based bear hunt for fall 2025. Frederick noted that Florida’s bear numbers have rebounded significantly since the 1970s, especially in heavily populated regions. SCI supports a science-based wildlife management approach that includes sustainable hunting to help control growing bear populations. The FWC will meet in August 2025 to evaluate population data, safety concerns, and public feedback. Frederick believes this hunt would offer a model for ethical, conservation-driven wildlife policy across the country. SCI continues to advocate for hunters' rights and supports fair, data-backed hunting regulations in Florida and beyond.
