Does Netflix’s new release for 2024, The Merry Gentlemen, live up to its reputation as the Magic Mike of Christmas movies? No! And boy do we have a lot to say about why. This is our discoursiest episode of the season, so get ready to dig in to a discussion of sex work, homonormativy, masculinity on film, and the anatomy of a great onscreen kiss.

Let's talk about the catfish in the room! Netflix’s Love Hard (2021) is a movie Nicole calls the offspring of How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days and She’s All That. 

We wanted even more discourse so we’re trying a new format this week where we speed-run our summary of the movie so we can get to the juicy stuff. What biases do dating platforms reproduce? Why can’t these characters connect to their own desires? Can you even catfish in a queer community?

Gay tidings and happy December! We are starting season 3 with Vanessa Hudgen’s Netflix christmas classic, The Knight Before Christmas. The anachronisms are neither hither nor tither in this delightfully bland movie. Suspend your disbelief and join us in this festive romp through time, space, and at times, reason.

It's our long-awaited Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star episode! Renowned horse-liker and conflict resolution expert Hadley Staite returns to join Nicole and Julie for a discussion of 2021's heist addition to the Netflix Holiday canon. On paper, this should be the quintessential holiday AND Hallmark movie: Mean Girls' Lacey Chabert runs out of her family's toaster strudel savings and has to move back to Idaho, where she meets sentient mashed potato and former high school classmate Danny (Hallmark mainstay Brennan Elliot), who happens to be the music teacher at her daughter's new school. 

Meanwhile her wacky aunt Sara (Hocus Pocus' Kathy Najimy) is valiantly casting spells and hexes to maintain the stability of a reality where Mariah Carey (Glitter, which we can't believe we didn't mention once) is the star and director of a Christmas movie where nobody sings or even hums "All I Want for Christmas Is You." It’s an appropriately bizarre note to end our first season on, and our special guest Nicole Slipp (aka "Dr. Slipp") tries to help us make sense of it all.

Suggested by friend of the show Rachel Reid, a Halifax-based author of wonderful gay hockey novels, this one stars Haligonian hockey-haired hero Steve Lund as a guy who we think may have been in the Air Force, but he is discharged and returns to his small hometown for Christmas, where he meets an attractive orthopedic surgical resident. They both receive a series of riddles designed to unlock their Christmas spirit, if not their libidos.
