Episode 8: Journey to Insurance with Rebecca Yates
Rebecca Yates
Rebecca is a published author, licensed insurance broker, consultant, and owner of Ark Insurance Solutions, LLC.
She has been working in the health insurance industry since 2004.  Rebecca Yates has 5 small businesses.

Her first business was a clothing line for women with large breasts.  In America, we were whiny, and she felt like they could give people jobs.  She knew nothing about clothing but decided to start the business.  That business gave her the confidence when her day job became unhappy to get into insurance.

The other businesses include retail insurance brokerage, wholesale insurance brokerage, a book written with Jack Canfield, and a short-term vacation rental company with properties in Arkansas.  She is planning to follow the wise words in The Pumpkin Plan that says to consolidate, so she is contemplating letting the clothing line go.
Rebecca never intended to be an entrepreneur.
She loved business, she was in the business clubs, but she didn’t want to be an entrepreneur.  All of her friends wanted to be entrepreneurs.  She didn’t want to work massive hours and just wanted to climb the corporate ladder and be an archaeologist.  She is probably the only one of that group that actually owns a business.
Rebecca is a science geek.
Even as a child she collected old bones.  She used to volunteer at the museum of natural history cleaning dinosaur bones and putting them back together.  She likes money and is very fair skinned so being out in the weather digging for bones probably isn’t realistic, so she did business instead.

Rebecca had a struggle as a business owner because she got sued when she started her second business.  She also had another experience with partner separations.  The lesson learned here is to always get contracts cleaned up and signed right at the start.
Make good friends with excellent lawyers.
Rebecca talks about partnerships.  To have a partnership everyone needs to have equal ownership.   There needs to be a way there is a tiebreaker.  Make sure there is a leader.   Be very selective about who you let into your business.  Even background checks are necessary.  Do not assume anything.
You need to business date and not get business married.
Rebeccas balances personal and business life by being kind to herself.  She takes care of herself during the day.  If she needs a massage or wants to go to a movie she does it during the day.  She turns off her phone at night.  Clients try to make herself feel guilty, but she turns the phone off.

The book she co-authored with Jack Canfield, was a great experience.  The book is called, Conversations with Top Achievers and whe wrote a chapter in the book.  She has many boxes full of these books and hasn’t figured out how to distribute them.

Rebecca's company was selected as one of the Mountain West Capital's 100 fastest growing companies in Utah.  They were ranked number 63.  They also received the highest award from the Federal Government, the elite circle of champions.  CMS which runs healthcare.gov and selected 17 brokers across the united states and her company is one of them.
Rebecca ended up in insurance even though she considered insurance agents scummy.
While she was working for a cold weather gear company, they decided to move out of Utah and her soon to be ex-husband blocked her from leaving Utah because of some law that said it was in the child’s best interest.

She found herself as a single parent with no job and got offered a job in health insurance.  At the time she didn’t believe in insurance.  At the time she had taken her ex-husband off her insurance, and he rolled his four-wheeler.   The nurse pulled her aside and said because he didn’t have any assets and because they were still married...

Episode 7: Pivot to Your Goal with Cina Knecht
Cina Knecht
Cina Knecht, an immigrant with a knack for leveraging to obtain goals.
Cina immigrated to the United States. She describes herself as a crazy immigrant. She would have been a fourth-generation entrepreneur but decided she wanted a college degree. She showed up in the United States from Sweden on January 10th in Utah and was standing outside her University with her suitcases. Her tuition was paid, and she had $4.00 in her pocket. They asked where her apartment was and she didn’t know.

Luckily, she found a dorm contract and was able to find a place to stay. She wanted to get a good education. She didn’t know what she wanted to study but chose Computer Science.

Her family in Sweden were all entrepreneurs, and they questioned what she was doing. Cina, her husband, and children run 5 businesses.
You can be an entrepreneur and go to college.
The 5 businesses include Web Design, Metrics, and making Social Media payoff with her daughter. Her husband purchased a tax practice, and he is just starting that business and they also own a property management company. Cina and her husband have leveraged their income into real estate, purchasing of other companies.
Cina LOVES STRATEGY! That is her passion!
Cina ventured out in her very own WOSB several years ago with three other people as a financial advisor. Cina works well with her spouse, and he is her collaborative business coach. She has been married for 29 years.
Cina gets raw with an authentic missed-out, business story.
Six years ago, after having been a student forever, she met up with two brothers. One brother worked in the publishing industry and had invented an online platform that allowed publishers to convert a book to an e-book. The other brother was a software engineer. The group decided they could leverage this tool into an asynchronous publishing program for the educational teacher market.

Cina Knecht Teacher

No longer be a librarian but run the electronics in the classroom. The teachers were frustrated with apps. The group hired a team out of Bulgaria. The product moved forward quickly until the brothers began to argue. The team fell apart.

She took the product to the local education union trade show in a last-ditch effort. They showed the product, and they loved it. There was a venture capitalist there that liked the product as well. Because the team was stalled, another company published same materials and beat the team to market.
About a year later, Google created the Google Classroom. The company did not dissolve. She kept the assets, and she kept the name. She believes she still has a viable product. She has plans but hasn’t found the right team.
Pick the right partners.
Cina utilizes what she calls an Emotional Cycle.

Emotional Cycle

It is a great way to meet your goals. You can diagnose where you are at in the cycle and pivot to keep going toward the goal. The more significant your goals are, the more times you may go through the cycle, including several times in one day.

Cina stresses that you should have an advisor such as a business coach or mentor in your field to keep an eye on your horizon. These advisors can talk you off the ledge so to speak.

Cina has just launched a group called WOJO. It is mojo for women. The group is going to talk about identity and how to reclaim it. How do we take our past experiences and use our reputation to move forward and collaborate with other people.
Collaboration is massive and we get so much further by working with other people.
Small groups and events for women. Sign up for her email address at wojoforwomen.com

In addition to being an entrepreneur, Cina is a mother of 5 children.

2BizChicks Podcast Episode 6: Redefine yourself to accomplish with Julia Coronado
Julia Coronado
Redefine yourself to accomplish with Julia Coronado
Julia Coronado was raised in a very religious household where divorce was taboo.  She was married 14 years with six children and got divorced.  It had a significant effect on her and her life.

The spunky speaker had to answer the question of “What do I want to do?”  She hired a mentor because she was in a dark spot.  It was one thing to say life was hard but when had six young children and security was ripped from her.  She did not know how she was going to make it financially.  She was in a terrible spot, but she made her way forward.  She wanted to create balance for her children.

She assumed all the energy of guilt and shame and felt like she was not enough.  She felt like she should have done more.  Then she hired a mentor who trained her that the “should have” need to become “what can I do now?”
Other people looked up to her for advice because they admired her for making it through that experience.
Julia does personal one on one coaching, group coaching, or a hybrid.  It depends on how aggressive the client wants to be.

Tamara asked Julia what happened between this extreme life event and how she got to the point she could help others.  She said that she had a vision of her life purpose at a very young age and ironically one of the roadblocks that came up was a woman helping her through her divorce.

The woman became real with asking her why?  She had six kids and no certification.  How did she think she could help other people?  This woman was a catalyst to proving this woman wrong and propelling Julia forward in her coaching career.
It is not about having the answers, but what small shift can you make now to move forward.
She indicates she was going to make an investment in herself and get started.  When you get clear on your value and what services you offer things just happen.  Making the shift to serving other people then people can see you are authentic and they want your help and be in your space.  That combined with networking and consistently getting out there makes Julia a success.

Julia Coronado is an outspoken, say-it-like-it-is empowerment and accountability coach who specializes in assisting women to regain their confidence and self-esteem following divorce and domestic abuse. After she went through a nasty divorce, she began pairing her talents with her “mess” of life experiences to teach women how to use their voice, know their worth, and get out of their way to achieve their dreams.

In addition to being a coach, mentor, and speaker, Julia is a mother of 6 children.

2BizChicks Podcast Episode 3: Just Say No
Tamara and Linda recording the 2BizChicks Podcast

Linda Rawson and Tamara Tran open the podcast with some discussion about the Mentor/Protégé program with the Small Business Administration.
Linda and Tamara get approached often to help other companies with advice.  Sometimes you just need to say no.
Linda talks about her Mentor/Protégé relationship with Select Engineering Services in Utah.  They showed Linda how to do Technical Proposals, Cost Proposals, and how to get prepared for DCAA audits.  NOTE:  We have a Chart of Accounts on 2BizChicks for you to download to help you with your DCAA audit.
So many companies want to be a protégé but how does a company go about that?
Find a company you know and develop that relationship.  It was a great way for SES to be able to have an avenue for socioeconomic contracts and let’s face it, 49% is better than 0%.  It is great to have a prior relationship with the company you choose as a mentor.
Develop the relationship first.  Everything is about relationships.
For Linda and Tamara, choosing a protégé or a someone to mentor involves looking for particular things in a company.  When a company comes to them and wants help, they want to help.  They always want to help but the protégé needs to be prepared with exactly the kind of help they need and any documentation to back that up.  Nobody gets a free ride, and the mentor will always say…what is it in for me.
We have lots of opportunities to help people with advice.  Approach the mentor prepared.
Both Linda and Tamara have a problem saying no because they like to help people.  Tamara says her enthusiasm does not rub onto the person wanting help.  Tamara says sometimes she is too helpful which can come across as pushy.  But our expectations are high because we have a limited amount of time.

Linda talks about people who do not do what they say they are going to do, also known as flakes.  She says that she has a three-strike rule and if they cannot contribute to the project by the third thing they promised to do then she is done.  She does not want to waste her time if they are not going to produce.
At the end of the day, it is all about time.
Tamara talks about why she started her business.  Her and Ly combined their talents to create their own business.  Linda talks a little bit about starting her business.  Tamara and Linda talk about being an entrepreneur.  Sometimes you must say no to family when they request your time.
Make yourself a priority and then everyone else will also.
