Transcript (if needed):

Hello, and welcome back to zensational student meditations. Today we are going to talk about the (many) benefits of meditation. As many of you might know, meditation is a widely known practice that can be done by anyone. But some people do not know that there are many benefits to it too. Meditation has shown to have positive impacts on people. There are the more obvious benefits, decreasing stress and anxiety, and increasing positive emotions and our self-awareness. There are some lesser-known benefits such as increasing your patience and tolerance and even expanding our imagination and creativity. A study done at MIT about the benefits of meditation revealed that meditation reduced the activation of the amygdala, a brain region that processes fear and other emotions. According to the Mayo Clinic, meditation has many benefits relating to emotions. “When you meditate, you may clear away the information overload that builds up every day and contributes to your stress. The emotional benefits of meditation can include: Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations, Building skills to manage your stress, Increasing self-awareness, Focusing on the present, Reducing negative emotions, and more. Some research suggests that meditation may even help symptoms of different types of illnesses including, asthma, high blood pressure, and heart disease. However, more scientific research needs to be done on this. Actual scientific research on meditation has been a  recent endeavor, and hopefully, as time goes on, we will discover more benefits of meditation with actual scientific evidence. Since this is a podcast mainly for students (but anyone can benefit from this podcast, don’t worry!), let’s talk about some specific benefits of meditation for students. In a meditation study, students reported “perceptions of decreased test anxiety, nervousness, self-doubt, and concentration loss”. These students also believed that the skills of meditation would help them in their careers. That is all for today’s episode. Thank you so much for listening! Transcript (if needed):

Hello, and welcome back to zensational student meditations. In today’s episode, I will be talking about the history of meditation. Even though the topic of meditation has only been popularized in the western world recently, meditation has actually been around for thousands of years. It was first founded in 5000 BC and has connections to many different religions-mainly Hinduism. According to Mindworks, a meditation service, “In modern times, the art of meditation has mainly been associated with Asian spiritual traditions such as Theravada, Zen, and Tibetan Buddhism, to name but a few. Western interest in Eastern religions and philosophies seems to have begun in earnest in the 19th century due to colonialism and improved means of transportation and communication.” The 20th Century began the popularization of meditation in the west by Swami Vivekananda. His teachings (along with the teachings of other teachers) allowed people to have a greater understanding and interest in Eastern forms of spirituality. Mediation slowly became removed from its religious connotations and started to become an activity accessible to everyone. Mediation became more focused on relaxation and stress relief, rather than spiritual growth. As time has passed, more scientific studies have been done on meditation to prove its benefits. An article by the NCCIH (the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health) stated that “Many studies have been conducted to look at how meditation may be helpful for a variety of conditions, such as high blood pressure, certain psychological disorders, and pain. A number of studies also have helped researchers learn how meditation might work and how it affects the brain”. The rise of the internet has allowed for meditation to spread even more. Nowadays, we can search up anything about mediation and get a multitude of apps, videos, and podcasts (like this one!). So, that is the (ongoing) History of Meditation! Thank you so much for listening! Remember to follow this podcast on whatever platform you are listening to this on. If you have any questions or any ideas for more episodes, I have a Twitter account and email that are in the description of this episode, so you can ask me there. Transcript of Episode (if needed):

Hi! Welcome to zensational student meditations! I am Nandini, your host of this podcast. I am a senior in high school, and I created this podcast to help other students (regardless of age) learn more about meditation. Meditation has been such a hot topic recently, and the pandemic has increased this even more. I personally have been meditating regularly for about one and a half years, and it really has impacted my life in a positive way. One of the biggest problems in my meditation journey has been being able to find resources relating to mindfulness and meditation. Most of the apps I have are quite pricey. The resources for a healthy mental state shouldn’t be only available to those who can afford it. It should be accessible. I wanted to create a free resource for people to learn more about, and practice meditation. (music) so, what should you expect from this podcast? First, there will be various types of mediations that you can play when you want to. They will range from short one-minute meditations to longer thirty-minute sessions. Along the way, you can also learn about the many benefits of meditation, as well as the history of it. New episodes will be dropping frequently! Follow this podcast on whatever platform you are listening to this on. Thank you so much for being a part of this journey. Take care!

Thank you for listening!
