I chatted with Tegan Bennett Daylight, an Australian YA author, about her new book 'Royals'. Dubbed the 'anti Lord of the Flies', this book explores the complexities of teenagehood, while showing us how strong, empathetic, and intelligent young adults can be. Episode 8! And this is such an exciting one, because this is my very first podcast interview :)
This week, Natalie Sea, author of 'Burnish' (out today!), is talking to me about her writing and publishing journey, and we're diving deep into some great writing advice (particularly on characters and pacing), as well as publishing and book marketing tips.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Burnish, and I can tell you that it is a fantastically unique dark fantasy. And a great study in trauma. With five main characters - and told in the format of short stories woven together - Burnish must have been really difficult to juggle. But Natalie is an expert writer, and she didn't only manage it; she did an amazing job of it!
Want more from Natalie? She makes great educational content for writers over on YouTube, so check out her channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@nataliesea/featured

Episode three! I'm loving making this podcast, so let's keep talking teen fiction.
In today's episode, we're discussing writing advice and feedback. There is SO MUCH advice out there, and when you reach the point of asking for feedback on your work, the question of 'how do I write well?' can be very, very daunting. Of course, a lot of writing advice is good and relevant - it helps us create better books that readers can understand and engage with.
But sometimes writing advice and feedback can be conflicting or contradictory, or you may not believe it works for you. So today I'll tell you about some types of advice to avoid, and how to develop a strong writer's intuition to know when advice will improve your book, and when it won't. This podcast isn't about ignoring things like spelling and grammar, but learning when to stand your ground against feedback that doesn't work for you - because your story is YOUR story.

Time for episode two! I really enjoyed making the first episode, and now that I'm getting used to the process of podcasting, I loved making this one even more.
So let's talk teen fiction. In episode two, 'First Page Mistakes', we're talking about how to hook your ideal reader from the very first line of your novel. The first page is the most important page. It tells the reader exactly what they're in for, and helps them decide whether or not to read your book -- so you'd better make a great first impression.
Today, I'll warn you against some common first page mistakes, and advise on what to do instead. :)

Thanks for joining me on my very first podcast! I'm so excited to start this journey and talk about YA (young adult) fiction with you.
On episode one, I discuss tips on how to ensure your fiction stays realistic - and therefore relatable and immersive - for readers. It doesn't matter if you're writing a complex fantasy novel with magic far beyond our reality, or a contemporary based on real-life settings and occurrences. Books either do or don't feel 'real' to readers based on the way you build and tell your story.
Let's go over how to add realism to your novel, to make readers believe even the most unbelievable fiction!
