Robert Heath, Sr. is an author, engaging communicator, and leading expert in Empowering Leadership. His work is centered on helping leaders get the best out of themselves and those that work for them. Robert Heath, Sr. received his JD, cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law. He also holds an MA in Teaching from Christian Brother’s University, as well as dual Bachelor degrees in Economics and Speech Communications from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Robert Heath, Sr. served for 8 years as a United States Marine Corps Officer and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his leadership as a Commander of one of the largest companies in the Marine Corps. Combining the Leadership principles he learned as an Officer and Company Commander in the United States Marine Corps with the personnel development strategies he has mastered over 20 years of leading, teaching, and coaching, Robert Heath, Sr. works with leaders who desire to increase productivity, initiative, and follow through; reduce stress; and get the very best out of their team on every project, regardless of who they may lead.
In this episode, Robert Heath, Sr. reveals that seeing the greatness in others is key to being an excellent leader. Facilitating the success of others also lessens the workload of the leader. Robert Heath, Sr. further encourages leaders to build trustworthy relationships with others, taking action on constructive feedback given to them by their team, instead of always being the ones to give the feedback. Often, team members only need simple things from their leaders, and do not seek to overwhelm them by requesting company-wide changes.
Together, Sarah and Robert Heath, Sr. explore what leaders can practically do to foster a sense of belonging in the team, and encourage team members to access their greatness. Robert Heath, Sr. suggests learning coaching questions, probing, expanding, and closure, and to avoid ‘why’ questions, to open up an honest conversation. He also suggests listening attentively with the goal of actually understanding, rather than listening mindlessly, or listening to respond.
