Die Simple Minds hatten 1977 als Punkband begonnen, wurden dann als New Wave Band gehandelt, hatten lange wenig Erfolg und dann lange viel zu viel davon. Letzteres hat ihrer Musik nicht gut getan. Die war zwischen 1979 und 1984 aber wirklich gut, sehr gut sogar: experimentell, manisch, düster mit herrlich assoziativen Texten: Achtziger Jahre Angst statt Popschwulst mit Politkitsch. No cooking, no drinking, but soon. Und ohne Don't You Forget About me - aus lizenzrechtlichen Gründen.

Im November 1979 erschien das zweite Album von Public Image Limited (PIL), mit dem sich John Lydon von seinem Alter-Ego Johnny Rotton (Sex Pistols) endgültig verabschiedete. Statt Punk-Attitüde machte er jetzt Kunst und erweiterte die Möglichkeiten dessen, was Rock oder Punk sein konnte: der Post-Punk war geboren. Eine mitunter anstrengende, aber sehr folgenreiche Platte. Zeit sie in aller Ausführlichkeit und mit allen Einflüssen vorzustellen.

Im November 1979 veröffentlichten The Jam ihr viertes Album. Vielleicht ihr bestes. Auf alle Fälle war das damals das erste, was ich mir von ihnen kaufte. Und es war auch eines der ersten der damals zeitgenössischen Musik. Heute nennen wir das Post-Punk. Keine Gitarrensoli, aber viel Wut. Und tolle Texte. Die habe ich für euch übersetzt. Man kann sie sonst so schlecht verstehen. Aber ich habe sie damals verstanden. Sie waren ja im Inlet abgedruckt. Und an denen habe ich mit 15 mein Englisch geschult. Und habe mich verstanden gefühlt. Paul Weller rechnet hier mit seiner Zeit ab, der beginnenden finsteren Thatcher-Jahre. Ich fühlte mich verstanden. Es ging um Freundschaften. Die nicht halten, weil das Leben hart ist. Weil man Geld verdienen muss. Scheiß auf die Ideale. Wie war das bei euch? Was ist aus euren Idealen geworden?

Joe Bowie kommt aus dem Free Jazz und dem New Yorker No Wave. Er gründete Ende der 1970er die Funkband Defunkt, die (Free) Jazz tanzbar machte und dem Disco den Stinkefinger zeigte. Kombiniert mit Postpunk und Funk war das eine wilde Mischung, die durchaus kommerzielles Potenzial hatte, es aber nicht erreichte. Heute gelten die ersten beiden Defunkt-Alben als Klassiker – sowohl im Jazz wie im Funk. Manche meinen, Joe Bowie hätte mit Defunkt dem Jazz der frühen 1980er einen Weg gewiesen. Den aber niemand mitgehen wollte. Miles Davis nicht, Wynton Marsalis nicht. Die spielten Pop. Oder Retro. Nicht Defunkt. Schade.

Bauhaus aus Northampton erfanden 1979 mit „Bela Lugosi’s Dead“ den Gothrock. Inspiriert von den deutschen Avantgardisten des Dessauer Bauhaus entwickelten sie düstere und manchmal auch sehr harte Klanglandschaften mit einem Sänger, der immer klang, als würde er um sein Leben singen. Die Musik hat mehr als vierzig Jahre später nichts von ihrem Impakt verloren. Dare!

In einem gottverlassenen Kaff in Alabama wurde Anfang der 1960er Jahre eine neue Musik erfunden: Soul. In Muscle Shoals etablierten sich mehrere unabhängige Studios und schufen mit ihren Hausbands einen ganz bestimmten Sound: den lässigen Muscle Shoals Sound. Ein Amalgam aus Rock and Roll, Country, R&B und Gospel. Bis in die 1970er (und darüber hinaus) kamen dann auch viele auswärtige Künstler aus der ganzen Welt, um hier aufzunehmen und diese ganze besondere Atmosphäre aufzusaugen. Beginn meiner Serie über die Musik und Sounds aus dem amerikanischen Süden.

Kris Kristofferson war schon ein Rebel-Country-Sänger, als es das Genre noch gar nicht gab. Er ist kompromisslos seinen Weg gegangen: Hat mit seiner Offiziersfamilie gebrochen, um statt in der Army in Nashville sein Glück zu suchen. Dort arbeitete er als Hausmeister in den Columbia-Studios, um den Country-Stars seine Songs zu verkaufen. Landete mit seinem Hubschrauber im Vorgarten von Johnny Cash, damit der endlich einen Song von ihm aufnimmt. Er spielte in großartigen Filmen wie „Heaven’s Gate“ mit, die seine Karriere und das Filmstudio ruinierten. Nahm gegenüber der amerikanischen Politik kein Blatt vor den Mund, verteidigte Sinead O’Connor, als die wegen einer politischen Aktion angefeindet wurde. Und schrieb einige der wundervollsten Songs des modernen American Songbooks.

2023 kam mal wieder eine Neueinspielung der „Goldberg Variationen“ heraus. Und die war und ist eine Sensation: Der eh schon gefeierte isländische Pianist Vikingur Olafsson schickte sich an Glenn Gould vom Thron der Goldberg-Interpreten zu stoßen! Gould hat 1955 und 1981 bahnbrechende Aufnahmen vorgelegt. In einer schlaflosen Nacht mit viel Bach wurde der Gedanke geboren, diese und weitere Aufnahmen von Murray Perahia, Andrei Gavrilov, Gregori Sokolov, Angela Hewitt, Igor Levit, Zhu Xiao-Mei und Andras Schiff (lauter gepriesene Goldberg-ExpertInnen) miteinander zu vergleichen. Erstaunlich wie unterschiedlich man die eh schon unterschiedlichen Variationen spielen kann!

Blood Sweat & Tears waren Ende der 1960er und Anfang der 1970er die Top-Jazz-Rock-Band der Welt. Ihre Mischung aus Blues, Rock und funkigem Jazz war damals bahnbrechend und ist noch heute hörenswert. Dazu erzähle ich euch etwas über „wilden Wein“.

„Virtuosität früher hatte etwas charismatisches und dämonisches, heute geht es um Schnelligkeit und perfekt sein. Früher mag ich lieber.“ Das hat Khatia Buniatishvili mal gesagt. Das Zitat könnte auch von Alice Sara Ott stammen. Beide noch jungen Pianistinnen stelle ich dieser Folge vor. Parallel. Weil sich beide in vielem sehr ähnlich sind. Beide sind sehr genau, intim spielende Interpretinnen, die aber auch zu Gefühlsausbrüchen fähig sind. Sowohl am Klavier wie auch in Interviews.

Nach dem Verlust zweier Söhne – einer stürzte als Teenager im LSD-Rausch von einer Klippe – hatte Nick Cave düstere, schwer zugängliche Platten veröffentlicht. Er nannte das Trauerarbeit. Die scheint jetzt abgeschlossen. Seine neue Platte ist eine Demonstration, wie man seine Trauer überwinden kann. Und deshalb sehr hörenswert. In dieser Folge stelle ich sie vor und erkläre ein paar verklausulierte Bezüge in den Texten.

Van Halen erfanden den Hardrock Ende der 1970er Jahre neu. Ihr Debüt von 1978 gilt bis heute als einer der besten (Rock)Erstlinge aller Zeiten. Eddie Van Halen, der leider schon gestorben ist, hat damals das Gitarrenspiel revolutioniert. Van Halens erste vier Alben strahlen eine Spielfreude aus, die man auch heute noch spürt. Und ihre Kinks-Cover sind einfach umwerfend.

Anfang der 1990er war der Man in Black scheinbar ans Ende seiner großartigen Karriere gekommen: Nachdem er mehrfach das Plattenlabel wechseln musste, stand er jetzt ganz ohne Label da. Seine Platten seit den 1980er Jahren waren immer schlechter geworden, niemand wollte ihn mehr hören, niemand glaubte mehr an ihn. Dann kam Rick Rubin. Der Produzent von HipHop und Heavy Metal überredete ihn, allen Ballast abzuwerfen und nochmal von vorne anzufangen. Daraus wurden die American Recordings, eine Serie von höchst erfolgreichen Aufnahmen, bei denen Johnny Cash wieder zu sich fand und sich ein völlig neues, jüngeres Publikum erschloss. Damit ist er endgültig unsterblich geworden.

Aerosmith haben angekündigt, nie wieder live zu spielen. Steven Tylers Kehlkopf ist kaputt. Vermutlich werden sie wohl auch keine Platte mehr aufnehmen. Daher ein vielleicht etwas verfrühter Nachruf auf eine der ganz großen Rock’n’Roll-Bands. Zumindest waren sie es das, bis sie Ende der 1980er Jahre radiotauglich zurechtgestutzt wurden. In den 1970ern spielten die „Toxic-Twins“, die „Bad Boys aus Boston“ den besten und schmutzigsten harten Rock’n’Roll in Amerika. Ich habe sie dafür geliebt und werde sie immer dafür lieben. G’n’R sind nur Epigonen! Basta!

Al Jarreau war ein Spätstarter. Als er sein zweites Album veröffentlichte, war er schon Mitte dreißig. Er kommt aus dem Jazz. Den er mit dem Bosa Nova, Rhythm & Blues, Funk und Pop verschmolz. Er besitzt eine unverkennbare Stimme, die er gerne auch als Rhythmusinstrument einsetzte. Außerdem war er umwerfend sympathisch, einfach ein netter Kerl. Seine frühen Platten begleiten mich schon seit Jahrzehnten und sind der lebende Beweis, dass Musik doch nicht immer weh tun muss, um relevant zu sein….
