CT sits down and talks with one of her mentors and friends, Karen Smith, a fellow paralegal and Mediator. Karen shares how she got into Mediation and legal services, and was persuaded to get into Social services first. She speaks on her experience in high risk domestic reports, human trafficking rescue, and how it built her career in Criminal law today. She talks about the flags around narcissistic behaviors, and her observations around other behaviors. Karen shares some of her insights on what can build up in a relationship that leads to high conflict issues in mediation. This is a great episode for mediators to look at what comes up in their screening and how individuals come into sessions by asking ”what is the relationship?” and ”what is the real thing that is being lost?”. Karen offers tips for mediators to carefully observe the behaviors of who initiates, identifying the ”talker” motivations, and other flags that can arise in mediation.
Today we announce something a little different: a mock mediation. Mediators in training get to practice these in preparation for mediation. CT invites her firm partners, Jasvir Bhatti and Daniel Reuven-Ezekiel Côté-Ryshpan.
Stay tuned for more mock mediations, and let us know what you think!
This week on our new AITA episode, we talk about two disputes: one between a wealthy podcaster and old friends; the next about an employee facing a dilemma around food being taken from a delivery business.
CT and Dale sit down with Khary Small, a mediator who specializes in Landlord Tenant disputes. The current situation in Ontario has created a serious backlog at the LTB. Filing forms with the Tribunal and expecting a quick resolution is not available... This is why private mediation can be a much more affordable option.
CT and Dale discuss ideas around elder mediation, but also introduce a book club! CT offers up titles for both mediators and any person interested in delving into mediation (fiction and non-fiction). Listeners - tell us about your ideas around Self-File Wills or when it’s good to make end of life planning (such as Living Wills).
Hey listeners! What songs facilitate a calm reflective mood for you? What helps with de-stressing? Do you need music to bring up up energetically to prepare you for a stressful situation? What artists do you resonate with? This week we tackle mediation and music!
CT gets to sit down with Daniel Cote-Ryshpan, one of the partners of ERB Legal LLP and discuss the benefits of hiring a parlegal, especially in the areas of Self-File legal areas like Civil litigation (suing someone), family court, Wills and Estate matters, and Immigration. CT and Daniel discuss how Paralegals can either take on the legal representation in Ontario, some US States and soon British Colombia, or point out to clients when it’s critical to have a lawyer represent parties.
Today CT and Dale try to tackle the juggernaut that is International mediation. CT uses sources that are still developing at the time of publishing in 2024, and Dale offers his input as a kind sounding board for those of us who feel this issue is anxiety inducing. There’s lots to unpack this episode, and we thank Jean Sarrazin for taking the time to edit this incredibly difficult topic.
We want to hear from you: tell us what’s going on for you during this time of great tension. Are you ok? Is your family ok? Do you have connections to the international tensions in the world? Send us your stories.
We’ve got another great round of mixed listener submissions and Reddit AITA! We look at the everyday conflicts people encounter from a mediation perspective. We also made a big shout out to Gordon Ramsay, hence the name of this podcast title in his honor! We look at restaurant conflicts and a MIL gets kicked out at night? Join us for the chat and feel free to write us your AITA problems or someone you know!
Jessica Sarrazin talks money matters with Mediator CT Ehler in areas of family mediation and the legal and financial matters that arise with separation and divorce.
This week, CT and Dale sit down with Dr. Shailla Vaidya to discuss the critical issue of how concussions are serious business. Only in the past ten years has more awareness and public education started to see a better understanding on how it can impact stress, function, and even issues of capacity. This is a really good way for people to understand how to navigate some of the day-today life, medical and legal issues that face anyone dealing with mental incapacity. CT also discusses Living Wills and why this is so critical for everyone to consider planning this, and shares why she is so passionate about making sure everyone has a proper Will set up.
CT and Dale talk Sports Mediation and Negotiation. They delve into some films and shows such as ”Moneyball”, ”Ballers”, and ”Hustle” as an opportunity to discuss negotiations and mediations. Legal issues are brought up such as the failed Toronto Olympic bid, the Koufax-Drysdale Holdout, and the firing of the Spanish Women’s soccer team coach.
Dale and CT share another installment of #AITA? from the popular reddit thread. We also have an audience member write in a question. Do you or someone you know have an AITA question that could benefit from a mediator’s perspective? Write to us today!
CT and Dale look at Wedding Mediation (not Divorce mediation) through the lens of the classic 1994 film, The Weddings Singer. Starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.
Mike MacConnell, Divorce Mediation specialist, sits down with CT and Dale to talk about his book, ”The Yoga of Divorce”, and conflict resolutions skills for everyone.
CT and Dale look at reddit and write ins from people asking if they might be a-holes. CT brings some of the realities that mediation would help clean up these issues, and Dale brings the hard hitting questions.
CT and Dale talk about the complexities of school mediation, and discuss Dale’s (and now one of CT’s) favorite show ”Heartstopper”. CT uses a mediation resource on peer mediation to unpack the masterclass on consent that this series of graphic novels and Netflix series presents.
