Twenty-Two: Managing Disputes in Mediation with Karen Smith
CT sits down and talks with one of her mentors and friends, Karen Smith, a fellow paralegal and Mediator. Karen shares how she got into Mediation and legal services, and was persuaded to get into Social services first. She speaks on her experience in high risk domestic reports, human trafficking rescue, and how it built her career in Criminal law today. She talks about the flags around narcissistic behaviors, and her observations around other behaviors. Karen shares some of her insights on what can build up in a relationship that leads to high conflict issues in mediation. This is a great episode for mediators to look at what comes up in their screening and how individuals come into sessions by asking ”what is the relationship?” and ”what is the real thing that is being lost?”. Karen offers tips for mediators to carefully observe the behaviors of who initiates, identifying the ”talker” motivations, and other flags that can arise in mediation.
