Training can feel “easy.” Race day is where the truth shows up.
In Willpower Podcast – Episode 63, hybrid athlete Murphy McCammon shares the mindset and methods behind his three big challenges—Ironman, bodybuilding prep, and a 100-mile ultramarathon—and how re-ordering his life (God → spouse → self/health → family/friends) changed his marriage, training, and purpose.
Murphy also breaks down what diet actually works in real life—whole foods, protein-first, minimize ultra-processed foods, and sustainability over extremes—plus lifelong fitness habits, diet fundamentals, and why self-care isn’t selfish. It’s a great conversation on faith, grit, and practical systems(priorities, discipline, and sustainable fitness) you can apply to your next hard thing.
We cover:
✅ Building a life hierarchy (God → spouse → self/health → family/friends) and why self-care isn’t selfish
✅ Bodybuilding realities: reverse dieting, 6 meals/day, social tradeoffs, and why posing is “cardio”
✅ The 100-mile ultra: training vs. race day, dealing with mental slumps, and finishing after 28+ hours
✅ Motivation vs. structure: signing up first, using plans/coaches, deloads, and reducing friction
✅ Nutrition that actually sticks: whole foods, protein first, and ditching “temporary diet” thinking

What if your deepest pain could become your greatest superpower?
In this episode, I sit down with therapist and somatic-experiencing guide Joe Bielling (Certified Internal Family Systems L3 Therapist) to dismantle the myths of suffering and reveal a roadmap from resistance to resilience. We unpack the Buddhist “three poisons” of craving, aversion, and ignorance, dive into Internal Family Systems to meet the parts of ourselves we usually hide, and explore Joe’s transformative 10-day Passano meditation retreat where learning to simply feel pain unlocked new levels of self-trust.
Joe shares candid stories from his coming-out journey, faith struggles, and the creation of his co-authored book From Broken to Badass, offering practical somatic exercises you can use today to regulate your nervous system and turn wounds into wisdom. Whether you’re ready to embrace radical acceptance or simply curious about the power of presence, this conversation will equip you with fresh tools to step into a more integrated, empowered life.

What happens when you remove all distractions—no phone, no talking, no eye contact—for 10 straight days and are left completely alone with your thoughts?
In this milestone 60th episode of the Willpower Podcast, I’m going solo to share the raw, honest truth of what it was like to attend a 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat. No guests this time—just me, my mind, and everything that surfaced in that silence. This experience broke me down, challenged every part of me, and forced me to confront pain, boredom, past regrets, and the patterns that usually stay buried under noise.
But what came out of that silence was equally powerful: clarity, calm, and a deeper understanding of who I am and how I want to live. From physical discomfort to mental breakthroughs, this retreat taught me lessons that go far beyond the cushion—lessons in equanimity, discipline, and the strength it takes to sit still when everything inside wants to run.
Whether you’re curious about meditation, feeling burnt out, or searching for something deeper, I think this episode will give you a perspective shift you didn’t know you needed.
