Viswamitra brought Ram and Lakshman to King Janak's palace to see the divine bow of Shiva. Janak declared that only the man who could string the bow would marry his daughter, Sita. Ram effortlessly lifted and then shattered the mighty bow while trying to string it. Ram married Sita, and his brothers Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughna married Urmila, Mandavi, and Shrutakirti, respectively. On their return to Ayodhya, they encountered the fearsome sage Parashuram, whose bow Ram also strung and released an arrow from, humbling the sage.
