Being Mission-Driven And Changing The World Through Soap with Founder Mera McGrew
The rise of conscious consumerism means there’s even more need to know where to turn to do the right thing. Today’s guest, Mera McGrew, is the founder of social enterprise Soapply, a sustainable hand wash company. She joins me as we discuss how micro-movements drive change, the mission-driven company’s culture, and making every part of a product purposeful. After living and working in Africa, Mera saw first-hand the reality of preventable child mortality and the difference that sustainable investments in water, sanitation, and hygiene could have on an individual, community, and region. Returning to the US, the connection was simple — everyone needs soap. Soapply provides consumers premium, toxin-free soap that helps put soap in the hands of those who cannot afford it around the world. As Mera says, “when you stay healthy you have an opportunity to learn, work, and do anything you want to do”. The Art Of Venting – Playing It Cool
A topic I notice that keeps on arising for managers is how people handle frustration about – and with – fellow team members. We can’t read each other’s minds and we are human but it’s important to lead by example, and be fully responsible for your team’s perception across the business. In this solo episode, I uncover how to use a ‘buddy’ to vent effectively, the “so what” trigger question, as well as venting as an introvert vs extrovert. We all have the intention of doing good ultimately, so it’s about how you can help your colleagues see the impact they’re having. Q&A session OverTimeLeader #AskGillian
Welcome to our first #AskGillian episode where OverTime's founder and author of 'First Time Leader' (Wiley 2014) Gillian Davis answers some great leadership questions from our listeners. Have a question, send your question alongside #AskGillian via our twitter (https://twitter.com/OverTimeLeader)or email (gillian@overtimeleader.com) In this episode we cover: Q1: I've got an employee who just doesn't seem to care about deadlines. We've spoken about it time and time again. They are quite 'work young'. And honestly I'm just at a loss on what to do as they have been with us for 5 months? Q2: The place I’m working is let’s say, developing their feedback culture. Basically, people don’t feel comfortable doing it and don’t know how to do it in a useful way. They tend to talk about people to their manager instead of the person in question. In the short term I have someone in my team who I’ve had numerous comments + complaints about. However he’s never received that specific feedback to his face, and also feels like he’s doing a better job at things (the comments are all related to his manner and temper (!)) he’s also, always sweet as pie when I talk to him…..so my question is - what would you do as a manager in that instance. I need to make sure his end of year review is based on things that I can validate and I hate 2nd hand feedback, but also don’t want to miss out this bad behaviour if indeed it is still happening Q3: Hey Gillian. I've been asked to run a session for all the line managers at my company on making the most out of the one-to-ones with direct reports. Wondered if you had any material on Overtime leader or could suggest any good material elsewhere that maybe you've used before? Thanks!
