Hi, I’m Pete Nordstrom, and I'm the host of The Nordy Pod, a new podcast coming to you from the 6th floor of Nordstrom corporate headquarters in Seattle, Washington. In addition to hosting this podcast, I also happen to be the president of Nordstrom. And along with my brother Erik, CEO, and my cousin Jamie, President of Stores, we're the fourth-generation stewards of this business started by my great grandfather in 1901. My Nordstrom journey began when I was 12 years old with my first job working in the stockroom. And along the way, I’ve met so many incredible people, from iconic artists and CEOs to cultural and community leaders and fashion entrepreneurs—as well as many of our thousands of employees and millions of customers. One thing I've found helpful in running a company and hosting a podcast is the importance of having a strong sense of curiosity. Over the years, I’ve found myself in some very interesting conversations with people I greatly admire. These cumulative experiences have really enriched my life, and with The Nordy Pod, I'm excited to have the opportunity to share both professional and personal experiences with you. So join me on a journey as I take you deep into a business that also happens to be a public company. You'll go behind the scenes with me and hear firsthand exactly what I do in my day job, warts and all, in the hopes of making a human connection with every episode.

For over 50 years our company—Nordstrom Inc.—had been a publicly traded entity. Owned by shareholders, traded on Wall Street, and largely evaluated by its stock price. That all changed on May 20, 2025, when we—the family—with more than a little help from our friends, bought it back. What does that actually mean? How does that all work? What are the potential risks, and long-term implications for the future of the business? These are the questions that we’re here to answer today in Part 1 of our two-part series all about how Nordstrom went private. From the outside it may seem like this sort of thing happens relatively quickly. An offer is made, the stock gets bought, the company disappears from the market, and that’s it! What is Nordstrom's number-one goal? If you're a Nordstrom employee you'd better know the answer, because it's pretty much the first thing that we ask at every state-of-the-company meeting. Invariably when we single out our newer crew members we'll get a mixed bag of pretty good answers. But the truth is, there is only one answer—which is to improve customer service. And it's that word "improve" that we're really focusing in on today. Customer service is our single most important characteristic and the foundation of our whole reputation. But here's the rub: with that shining reputation comes incredibly high expectations. Expectations that rest on the shoulders of each and every person that works at our company, from our salespeople to our store managers, from regional managers all the way up to our executive team. And though we do get a lot of really great feedback about our people stepping up and making somebody's day, we also get our fair share of negative remarks. Times when we've fallen short. When the customer experience doesn't live up to our reputation and the customer's expectations. And yet, it's in those failures—the imperfect moments—that we often find the most meaningful lessons. Ep 89. Sara and Erin Foster, Cofounders of Favorite Daughter
Early in 2024 more than 2,000 people showed up to our Nordstrom store on 57th Street in New York. Not for a celebrity fragrance launch. Not for a new shoe drop. But for a live taping of a podcast. And it wasn't The Nordy Pod. It was a podcast called The World’s First Podcast, hosted by our guests for this episode, sisters Sara and Erin Foster.   But to be honest, their podcast isn't even the main reason we've invited them to be on our show. The Foster sisters have had an incredibly diverse career in seemingly disparate industries. Daughters of legendary music producer David Foster, Sara and Erin grew up in Los Angeles surrounded by celebrity and showbiz. They found opportunities in the early 2000s acting in film and television, which Erin parlayed into comedy writing, and they both eventually built on to begin co-producing projects like a reality TV spoof based loosely on their own lives, called Barely Famous, and more recently the Netflix show Nobody Wants This starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. Aside from that they've had notable success investing in tech companies like the widely used dating app Bumble, and in 2019 launched a venture capital firm called Oversubscribed Ventures that focused on early-stage, disruptive technology startups. But what really makes them relevant in our world is their entrance into the contemporary fashion retail space. Born from a playfully snarky one-off t-shirt designed with the words Favorite Daughter, Erin and Sara have built and grown an impressive women's clothing brand that totally fits their personalities, and that purposefully and unapologetically aims to round out their wardrobes. The brand stands out from the crowd without chasing trends or leveraging fast fashion, but rather by producing clothes that customers actually want to wear—and at a price point that's actually accessible.   In this conversation we explore the trappings of their celebrity-adjacent upbringing, how the effects of nepotism have impacted their journey for better and for worse, and how Favorite Daughter has become one of the hottest new brands on the Nordstrom sales floor. Every spring, on the first Monday in May, an incredible transformation takes place on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The streets overflow with cars and people. A staircase becomes a red carpet. And a museum becomes a full-on party, filled with a select few of the biggest names in pop culture and the fashion industry. Spectators all around the world stop for this one moment all asking the very same question: “Did you see what they were wearing?” The Met Gala is fashion at full volume. A place where ideas come to life in silk, sequins, and sometimes… steel. At its core, it’s a fundraiser; but it’s also a veritable stage performance, a runway, and a virtual cone of silence for each attendee that mostly follow a strict no phone policy. The secrecy around what goes on inside, and the exclusive, hand-picked guest selection process are the fuel to this most envied of annual fashion events. Luckily for us, as friends of Anna Wintour — who’s been organizing the event since 1995 — Nordstrom often gets the highly coveted invite. And luckily for you, this year, we’ve decided to bring the Nordy Pod along with us. Joining us at the Met this year is someone who’s become a fairly regular voice on the podcast, and who is certainly a well-seasoned, longtime Met Gala attendee; our VP, Fashion Director at Nordstrom, Rickie De Sole. Ep 86. The Comfort Revolution: Birkenstock’s Boom with David Kahan
In the retail world, we often throw around the term "disruptor" when we’re talking about a promising new brand that breaks through the busy marketplace and challenges the status quo; or even leads the charge in a broader cultural movement. But in some cases, that story isn't about something new at all, but something enduring. Something that's been there all along, waiting for the world to catch up. Birkenstock is one such brand. For the majority of their roughly 250-year lifespan, Birkenstock—one of the oldest footwear brands in the world—has been slowly simmering in the background. They built a modestly successful business around the revolutionary innovation and the thoughtful evolution of their signature contoured footbeds, and over time their undeniable comfort and noticeable orthopedic benefits earned them an incredibly loyal yet hyper-niche following. Then, something remarkable happened. Hi, I’m Pete Nordstrom, and I'm the host of The Nordy Pod, a new podcast coming to you from the 6th floor of Nordstrom corporate headquarters in Seattle, Washington. In addition to hosting this podcast, I also happen to be the president of Nordstrom. And along with my brother Erik, CEO, and my cousin Jamie, President of Stores, we're the fourth-generation stewards of this business started by my great grandfather in 1901. My Nordstrom journey began when I was 12 years old with my first job working in the stockroom. And along the way, I’ve met so many incredible people, from iconic artists and CEOs to cultural and community leaders and fashion entrepreneurs—as well as many of our thousands of employees and millions of customers. One thing I've found helpful in running a company and hosting a podcast is the importance of having a strong sense of curiosity. Over the years, I’ve found myself in some very interesting conversations with people I greatly admire. These cumulative experiences have really enriched my life, and with The Nordy Pod, I'm excited to have the opportunity to share both professional and personal experiences with you. So join me on a journey as I take you deep into a business that also happens to be a public company.
