This week on The Midlifer’s Podcast, Fonz discovers she’s today years old when she realises the classic children’s book Spot was actually named after trying to spot the dog. Mind blown! Meanwhile, Mez is ready to break free and sing wherever she wants, family approval or not. Let the woman sing!

Then it’s Girl Power time in the, ‘Who Did It Better Battle’: The Spice Girls vs The Pussycat Dolls. Who ruled the pop charts and who ruled our hearts? Was it really just Nicole Scherzinger doing all the work? Controversial. But remember, The Midlifers come from a place of nostalgic love and memories.

So the big thing around fashion these days is that tight gym wear is out, and floppy jalopy gym clothes are in.  But listen up Gen Z, Mez had been there and done that in the early 00’s and can tell you that lycra might not be cool anymore, but it’s a helluva lot more practical on a treadmill than baggy pants.

Fonz has us questioning how much our generation has seen with changes in tech - from the introduction of the internet and mobile phones, to A.I taking over the world.  We’ve seen a lot, and the kids now refer to our childhoods as ‘the olden days’.

Our first segment this week is, ‘Don’t be a 🍆 at a Cothing Store’.  What are the things we hate about clothes shopping?  The one at the top of both Fonz’s & Mez’s list?  That awful bloody lighting in the changeroom.  Please, can we not so dramatically highlight our insecurities?!

Next is ‘Besties: Best Book to Film Adaptations.’  There are some great ones, like Bridget Jones, that produced movies that translated perfectly.  There were some bad ones too, that we hated watching and were just a big fat disappointment.

In our chin-hair wag, Fonz tells us about a car she saw that suggested the driver was a cheater.  What was the story? Why were his windows wound down? And why must a situation like this be honked at?

Meanwhile Mez’s teen has somehow accumulated hundreds of false eyelashes - where the f did they all come from?  Beauty for teens changed from back in our day when Maybelline Matte Mousse was the go-to.

Next we have our first segment, ‘Do You Remember…these 80’s fashion trends’?  When it came to fashion, the 80’s was loud, bold and colourful, and geez we have a lot of fun remembering some iconic fashion choices of the time.  Some of these are making a comeback, and some we really hope stay dead and never return - either way, it’s a great nostalgic look at this wonderful decade. 

We finish the show with, ‘Food, Glorious Food…Hot Beverages’.  Though technically not food, a hot bevvy can feed the soul just as comfort food does, and there are some good ones here.  From a hot toddy to a hot chocolate, we go through the drinks that we love to help warm the cockles.

Chrissy Amphlett once sang, ‘There’s a fine line between pleasure and pain.’  Turns out, there is also a fine line between standing up for yourself and being a Karen.  Fonz ponders this as she fears she may have had a Karen moment, and as we discuss this, we see there are some murky lines between the two.

Mez’s daughter played Pac Man over the weekend.  Now it looks like she knows more about this classic 80’s arcade game than Mez.  This led us to a conversation about possibly having a Midlifer game of laser tag.  Anyone keen???

We’re bringing back ‘Don’t be a 🍆’ this week.  It’s all about hotel etiquette.  What is ok to take home from the hotel room? Are you kids allowed to cannon ball in the pool? And a warning: don’t lick the mirrors or wrap yourself in the curtains…

This week we are also doing a ‘Deep Dive’ on The Simpsons!! Do’h! A bit of feedback from our earlier episode re TV Heartthrobs.  One of our listeners, Tanya, mentioned Phelpsy.  The curly haired cutie from Water Rats 😍  This reminded Mez of her discovery of Mitch from Baywatch cira 1992 - he was a bit of alright, she recently realised.

Fonz has also made a discovery this week, about how a smile can go a long way.  From an anxious checkout line at Costco, to a walk in the neighbourhood, it’s funny how a smile can change the whole mood of the situation.

Our first segment this week is ‘Midlifer Moment: turning into your parents.’  We’re talking about the moment we either said or did something, and as soon as it happened, we had a flashback to our parents saying or doing the exact same thing.  From age old sayings to the dad sneezes that blow the house down, we dive into this metamorphosis.

Fonz is making new friends in Ubers.  No, it’s not with the driver who farted, but with other adults who might become her friends.  How weird is it making friends as grown ups?

Mez’s son is growing up, and Mez is premenstrual.  This means tears and reflection.  We talk about the bitter-sweetness of motherhood and how it makes us feel.

Our first segment this week is Besties - best home hacks.  Think about those random old wives tales we heard growing up, pre Google days.  Which ones worked?  Which ones do we actually use?  Do you have any good ones to share?

Our ‘Deep Dive’ this week is the good old fish and chips.  Think chicken salt, butchers paper, and the good old unknown ingredients in a Chiko Roll.  This segment will have you both laughing and drooling.

Fonz’s blood is boiling, and it’s all thanks to some random dude collecting money for charity.  What’s his problem? What’s Fonz’s problem?  And will she crack one day and do a Karen rant to launch her to virality??

Later this year, the Gen Xers and Millennials in Australia are going to have a field day, with Metallica, Oasis & ACDC all touring our shores at the same time.  Yep, us oldies are going to rock it, and Mez chats about it to start off this week’s show.

It’s cold in Melbourne right now, and Fonz has yeast.  So, rather than go out and buy bread, she’s decided to pull out the old bread maker and bake some goodness.  Meanwhile, Mez is feeling her age - the creaks and pains from random everyday activities have started - yep, middle age is well and truly here.
