It has been a garbage can summer for pop music and mainstream hip hop, and while those are the most money making sectors of the recorded music business, there is plenty of action from other parts of our culture that is worthy of Song of the Summer status. So much new music is released over the course of a year and because it is a constant struggle to push the super high quality music that has little to no marketing budget it makes perfect sense to do a best of 2025 thus far this year episode. 2025 has already been a banner year for new music, at least as far as I'm concerned, and we're not even at the halfway point. As I'm one of the only music critics listening to all the musics, I speak with knowledge that the continent of Africa, closely followed by Central and South America are the drivers of great music right now. It's a sad time for rock music and by default white people who make and listen to rock music. If you want white music I would refer you to heavy metal which works for non brunch white folks but that genre while reviled by the upper classes is global and there are heavy metal outfits all over the globe.Episode 103 features two records from Africa, one from Latin America, one from punkers and a heavy metal record by an outfit called Warbringer. The last track by Azuka Moweta inspired the title of Episode 103, Incomprehensibly Funky. I would urge folks to check out more than the 2 minute excerpt featured here, it's just a taste of how the whole record goes. Secondly, Kombilesa Mi (track 6 excerpt) is from Palenque and they perform in Spanish and their indigenous Palenque language called Palenquero, a blend of Spanish, African languages, and other European languages. New music thus far in 2025 has been crazy great. A great record is one that bears repeated listens, is interesting and creative in a unique way, and makes you feel something emotionally. Making people feel something through music is not as easy as it may sound.In a normal year I listen to well over 1,000 excerpts from new recordings and find maybe 20-25 recordings that fit my definition of a best of year recording. You can laugh at me for my nerdy approach to online new music scavenging but I keep a spreadsheet of great records that I find and thus far I've found 17 records that could quite easily end up on my best of 2025. That's a shit ton of new music in a very short period of time.In this episode the Agender record is easily a candidate to be on my best of 2025 list. Fronted by an Australian woman the record sounds like Devo went to the gym and got ripped and read a lot of feminist literature. In the first 4-5 weeks of 2025 I have found 4 albums certified banging accoring to the Magic Organ banging system, and we kickoff the episode today with a track from one of them. The internet's most fiery 13 minute new music podcast returns with our first sure to make the best of year list, Vaodou Game's new record FINTOU. Their previous efforts are over the top funky and partyistic, pumped beyond belief but this one has slowed down the tempo, added some accordion and guest singers and I think it's a certified bag of bangers as there's more depth to what they're doing here.
