As we mature the focus of our technique shifts through a number of phases, beginning with the “do I look cool doing this ?” stage and progressing to “will this work in an actual self defence situation?” and landing somewhere in the “can I make this work” and finally “how do i make this work and not cripple myself trying to in process” stage. What was once about being big and demonstrative gives way to what one hopes will be almost invisible. Shame, it’s a powerful emotion, and if given the steering wheel, can take us to all sorts of places and conclusions about ourselves. Often in the arts we spend a great deal of time building skill sets thin layer upon thin layer, fundamental upon fundamental, each a story in itself. Les Bubka Sensei, is a UK-based karate instructor, author, and mental health advocate originally from Poland. He is known for his inclusive, learner-centered approach to teaching karate and is the founder of the organization “Karate for Mental Health,” which promotes the benefits of martial arts for mental well-being and supports disadvantaged students. Bubka has written books such as Anxious Black Belt and The Dark Side of Karate, focusing on the intersection of karate and mental health. He is also recognized for adapting his teaching to support neurodiverse and disabled students, fostering a supportive and accessible training environment. Ulf Karlson Sensei of Kishiomoto Di, a pragmatic proponent of Bunkai and the merits of diving deep into your chosen art. He travels to Okinawa regularly, speaks Japanese and teaches and trains whilst on Island.
