056: Cat Gods, Goddesses, Deities, & Demons with Natalie Bovis

Natalie Bovis is a freelance lifestyle writer, cat mom to five feisty felines, and enthusiast of all things fantastical, historical, and mythological. She has an English mum and French dad but grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a place renown for being a magical energy vortex and refuge for artists of all kinds. Natalie is an animal advocate, kitten fosterer, and fundraiser for rescue organizations. Her hobbies include hiking, traveling, and vegetarian cooking. Natalie also produces culinary events and cultural vacation yoga retreats in the U.S. and Europe. She is the author of several mixology books, including Drinking with My Dog and Cocktails with My Cat.

But Natalie doesn’t just write about mixology! Today, we’ll be talking about Natalie’s new book and oracle deck, Cat Gods, Goddesses, Deities and Demons, which will be released in April. In this gorgeously illustrated collection, you’ll discover 51 of the most common and not-so-common cat gods, goddesses, deities, and demons from around the world and how to incorporate their Divine Feline Energy into your daily life. You’ll meet 51 feline deities and demons from four geographical families around the world—Africa, Americas, Asia, and Europe. You’ll also encounter mystical cats who work in alliance with human gods and goddesses. The feline entities come from different eras and cultures all over the world. Some are angelic guides, and others, demonic adversaries, but all play a role in our understanding of feline deities and why they became to be so. Learn all about these sacred godlike creatures, including what they look like, what they symbolize, and how you can use their spirit and ancient wisdom to tap into your own Divine Feline Energy.

GUIDEBOOK

Throughout time, felines have played a sacred role in human life. Archeologists have found cat remains buried with humans as far back as the tenth millennium BCE in Cyprus, and the Greek goddess Hecate is said to have regularly assumed the form of a cat. Hieroglyphics tell us that ancient Egyptians worshipped cat gods, and their queen Cleopatra had a kitty companion in her palace whom she called Tivali. A Chinese cat goddess called Li Shou is said to have protected farmers from mice, and Ai Apaec was a pre-Inca god with fangs and whiskers said to have descended from an even more ancient cat god.

This book is more than a guide to ancient cat gods. It’s an exploration of the way humans have observed, interacted with, learned from, and revered another species who share the Earth with us. Ancient folklore is rife with examples of animal cunning and compassion, and many humans invoked other species as spiritual guides or flat out worshipped them as gods. Arguably, cats are the most intriguing of animals because of how we can relate to them. Much like us, they are free spirits and adaptable survivors. We admire them for their dignity, independence, and ferocity.

In this gorgeously illustrated guidebook, you’ll meet 51 feline deities and demons from four geographical families around the world—Africa, Americas, Asia, and Europe.

055: Working with Your Spiritual Energy Within the Cycles of Nature with Sara Aranel

Sara Aranel is an anthropologist by degree and by heart. She has been forever fascinated and inspired by the depths and complexity of human existence. She's been walking her spiritual path since her mid-teens and has always balanced her spiritual self with her curious rational mind.

As a teacher and organizer of women's circles, she experienced firsthand how important this balance is for people. In a safe space where all aspects of our being are supported, people can relax as they feel safe, and in that state, they start healing.

For a little over a decade, Sara has been exploring the wisdom of the cycles of nature through the teachings of our ancient ancestral heritage. Turns out that they knew much about how to navigate our human life in different periods of a yearly cycle so that one doesn't burn out but builds a fulfilling life.

052: From the Goddess with Laura Hirch

Laura Hirch is an independent conscious filmmaker, journalist and artist. Her works center women, healing, spirituality, mysticism and art. She calls herself a spiritual feminist and an eco feminist, and both of these paths define her creative work. She has studied journalism in Munich, where she was born and raised, and documentary filmmaking in Los Angeles.

Laura is the creator of the independently produced 6-part docuseries FROM THE GODDESS which investigates the central role of the Great Goddess in early history and modern times and explores the concept of Her in many different aspects - from archaeology to social science, art and thealogy. Its aim is to show women that we have played an important role in earlier societies, having been not only worshipped as the creatrix of life but also the bearer of community and a source of sacredness.

The emergence of patriarchy 6000 years ago not only changed the role of women in society but also severed the connection to nature. Through the matriarchal worldview, which is still upheld by indigenous peoples today, we can learn to become better guardians of our Mother Earth once again.

In Our Right Minds is a sweeping journey covered efficiently and clearly, in short order - judiciously illuminating the history and relevance of the Goddess archetype, its impact on societies where this archetype is active, as well as its connection to our right-brain way of both attending to - and shaping - the world. In Our Right Minds garners praise for being “well-researched, organized, clear, level, balanced, without blame, and inclusive of all the human family.”

Carl Jung wrote in The Structure and Dynamic of the Psyche: “Archetypes, are the living system of reactions and aptitudes that determine the individual’s life in invisible ways. In Our Right Minds looks at the invisible yet powerful ways the Goddess archetype affects persons and cultures. When a society embraces the concept of a female creator, that society behaves differently than a society that embraces a male deity. As Anthropologist Peggy Reeves Sanday documented: there is a clear connection between Goddess veneration and: the honoring of nature, women’s role as officiators of sacred sacraments, connection to the land, and women’s power and social status. In Our Right Minds illuminates historical and current consequences of the suppression of the Goddess archetype, as well as the ways in which the Goddess archetype is being energized globally today. In Our Right Minds coherently and elegantly synthesizes psychology, history, myth, anthropology, sociology, art and poetry into an eye-opening and life-changing alternation of our perspective.
