Talking Lab Live
Locked-in Syndrome and eye gaze technology
In this episode of Talking Lab Live I’m sharing the incredible story of Jean Domonique Bauby, a fashion magazine editor who suffered a devastating stroke at the age of 43 in December 1995 which resulted in locked-in syndrome, a state of total paralysis in every part of his body except his eyes. Jean-Do as he was known to his friends had to learn a new way of communicating with the support of his talented and dedicated speech and language therapist who introduced a letter based system allowing Jean Do to spell out words using just his left eye. It’s an inspirational story of persevering through the most extreme circumstances to be able to communicate and it’s a story that’s always stayed with me through first hearing about it as a little girl. In our communication check-in we’re reflecting on our experience at the conference in London hosted by the Association of Speech and Language therapists in Independent Practice. Sophie confesses to not knowing her fiance’s year of birth, and I’m reminiscing on my amazing time as a bridesmaid this weekend. This week at Talking Lab we are Loving Chat GPT and Sophie shares her story of how she was first introduced to the technology and how she uses it to carry out tasks in all areas of her personal and professional life, including writing and illustrating a story about a goat who goes to war. That’s all coming up right now on this episode of Talking Lab Live!
