Former Rutgers Head Coach and acclaimed swimming writer Chuck Warner (a frequent guest to Swim Talk A2B) has done it AGAIN. His latest book release, "How To Be A Great Swim Parent" is a compilation and distillation of topics and issues related to the parent-child-coach relationships the ASCA Hall of Fame coach has collected and refined over the years, and as 2024 NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Mickey Wender has remarked, "I can't imagine a better resource to help us focus on the 'right things' as we support the development of a young mind and body."
Join A2B hosts Bob and Dana in an illuminating (what? you thought we were going to say "fascinating"???) round-table discussion of a valuable slim volume that USA Swimming Board Member Coach Ira Klein says is "...an absolute joy to read...so critical to help educate new swim parents..."

Three- time Canadian Olympian Jon Cleveland has been a swimmer, a coach, and overseer for the installation of Myrtha pools for the USA Olympic Swimming Trials. First representing Canada at the Olympics in 1988 (Seoul), he medaled in the 400 medley relay (Bronze) in 1992 (Barcelona), and returned for his last Olympics as a competitor in 1996 (Atlanta).
The son of MLB pitcher Reggie Cleveland, Jon was also a sports anchor and reporter for TV station CFPL in London, Ontario for 5 years.
A contemporary and rival of famed Canadian swimmer Victor Davis, Jon's visit with us takes us back to his roots in swimming, his journey to greatness, and his passion for the aquatics industry and competitive swimming, as well as swimming for all. We hear him voice his thoughts and perceptions about lifeguard shortages, learn-to-swim and lesson programs, and why there is a greater need for them now than ever.

One of the most successful collegiate careers in the business! Listen in as we have an engaging conversation with University of Virginia Head Women's and Men's coach Todd DeSorbo. Besides all of the NCAA and Olympic success, did he really say, " if there was one time-frame I would go back to in my life, it would be high school. Partly because... I loved high school, but my math classes were so much fun, and then [my coach] Nikki [Rosenbluth] was so much fun and swimming ... everything that we were doing was fun and I liked it. So it was easy to work hard at it."
Yes, he did. HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING.
We think you'll really enjoy this peek into the life and career of UVA and USA Olympic Head Coach Todd DeSorbo!

From 1985 to 2020, "ASCA" and "John Leonard" were unmistakably linked. As Executive Director of the American Swimming Coaches Association for 35 years, Coach Leonard has been inextricably involved with American swimming at almost every level from LTS (Learn-to-Swim) to the US National Team, from local organization to battling athletic doping on an international scale. You ought to really enjoy this first of a two-part conversation with "Mr. ASCA."

Griffith University Study "Early Years Swimming, Adding Capital to Young Australians" - The findings of a four-year project by the Griffith Institute for Educational Research, Laurie Lawrence’s Kids Alive Swim Program and Swim Australia have surpassed expectations and indicate that swimming children have many advantages when starting school.
“The children were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions.”
https://kidsalive.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/2013-EYS-Final-Report-30-July-13-JM.pdf

BONUS! Nate recalls a quote attributed to Plato that “every man is not learned until they can read, write and swim”. A quick search led us to the rationale behind that quote that “Plato thinks of both reading and swimming as things you learn through lessons, rather than naturally. The contrast is clear: babies learn to talk and walk on their own, but you have to teach children to read and to swim.”

2-One of the most heartwarming Olympic commercials explored a topic we discussed with Roy, that of kids following their passions and finding their joy, and is titled simply, "It's OK." We think it's BETTER than "OK"!

After getting 50 episodes "in the can" (and a few in the garbage can), we wanted to take a retrospective look at our coaching beginnings and the steps we've taken along the way, as well as looking at our coaching organizations. It's slightly less yawn-inducing than one might think. Slightly.

There are two types of announcers at major televised swim meets like NCAA Championships and US Olympic Trials: the big-time network pros in the nice upstairs booth who sit before the cameras with their play-by-play and color commentary, whose words get no immediate feedback or reaction, and then there are the solo announcers, usually on-deck with all of the attending media reps, communicating directly via the PA system with the seats in the stands, the ones whose job it is to provide more than names and numbers to the spectators on-site. Kevin Cargill is a former HS and college swimmer who has been mentioned as a possible successor to the big shoes and stellar heights reached by the late Sam Kendricks, "America's Swim Meet Announcer". Join us as we get to know this rising star in big-meet announcing!

Mark Onstott has been extremely successful at every stop along his coaching career, but maybe none so successful as his two decades at one of the most storied public high school swimming legacies in the nation at Winnetka's (IL) New Trier High School.
In Part 1 of our visit with Mark, we heard of his start in the sport.
In Part 2, we pick up with his tenure at New Trier as Head Boys Coach, including NT's TWO National Championships, and the beginning years that led up to those incredible achievements.

Mark Onstott has been extremely successful at every stop along his coaching career, but maybe none so successful as his two decades at one of the most storied public high school swimming legacies in the nation at Winnetka's (IL) New Trier High School.
In Part 1 of our visit with Mark, we hear of his start in the sport and his swimmer's journey from a young Red Cross lessons swimmer, to high school, to college, and then to his start in coaching, and all of the twists and turns a young coach could possibly encounter before winding up in charge of a boys program that ultimately won TWO Swimming World "mythical" National Championships. Quite a tale, and no one better to share it.
Part 2 will be launched shortly as Episode 49, just as soon as we deal with Hurricane Beryl, since Bob and Dana both live in the direct Texas path of the storm!
