This is a very special milestone episode. It is the 50th episode. When this show started, I wasn’t sure we would make it a year, but here we are and we are ranked in the top 10% globally among 3.5 million podcasts. Thank you to each one of you for being a loyal listener. Today, we are talking about a common fear: being alone. Solitude is generally perceived as bad. People desperately seek to fill every minute of their lives with noise or other people. Yet, it is in solitude where we can become the most powerful versions of ourselves. Listen as Pat Owens, a Divorce Care facilitator for more than 20 years, shares how living alone and being comfortable in solitude pushes us to discover strengths we never knew we had.
A common fear people have when in the divorce process is, “Oh no, I’m going to be alone for the rest of my life.” This fear keeps people in bad marriages. We’d rather put up with a bad relationship than be alone. But, think about how much mental energy we spend each day just trying to keep the peace. What if we were free of that pressure and learned to become comfortable with solitude? Solitude can be profoundly restorative.
Listen as we discuss the top five consequences of not managing our loneliness and how you can begin to savor and flourish from time spent alone.

Do you find yourself more anxious, stressed, perhaps becoming sick more frequently? There is a reason for that. It’s called Retired Husband Syndrome (RHS). Listen in as I share what RHS is and how you can manage not to lose your health and your sanity.
RHS is a real psychosomatic illness. It refers to a physical condition where wives experience stress, anxiety, or other health problems after their husbands retire and are home more often. This phenomenon is particularly observed in marriages with traditional gender roles, where the husband's retirement can disrupt the wife's established routines and sense of independence. It is the leading cause of divorce in Japan. In America, with the wave of Baby Boomers reaching 65, it has risen here as well. Divorce among those age 65 plus accounts for 1 in 4 divorces in the US today.
RHS manifests as various physical and psychological symptoms in the wife, including headaches, sleeplessness, depression, and increased feelings of stress, irritability, anxiety, even leading to ulcers.

More couples are divorcing after age 50 than ever before. Yet, there is another phenomenon on the rise: the Silent Divorce. Many married people experience this phase for years before deciding to divorce. Some never divorce for financial reasons or they still have children in the home, or because they think this is the way it has to be when you are older. Listen in as I talk about the growing awareness of the Silent Divorce Phenomenon.
Silent Divorce is when a couple loses the profound emotional and physical connection to one another, yet they choose to stay together for financial or other reasons. Some signs:
There is a loss of physical intimacy. "We live as roommates" is commonly heard.
You sleep in separate bedrooms.
You no longer have shared activities.
You’re both in the same room staring at different screens.
There are fewer attempts to communicate what's happening or at all.
You've lost the plot to your marriage, meaning you've forgotten the story line or how your romance novel began.

If your divorce was the result of the trauma of abuse or betrayal, you probably spent decades in a state of confusion and disconnection. Listen as Stephanie Blyler shares her work at Connections That Heal, and how she gently guides women to reconnect with themselves, with God, and with others in a safe community. She helps women move from second-guessing and self-doubt to grounded awareness and quiet confidence in a life after #divorce. Stephanie discusses:
What an emotionally destructive marriage looks like.
How men use misassignment of responsibility to keep us stuck.
How 74% of women go to their pastors for help and they often enter a crisis of faith when faced with the prospect of divorce.
How women in traumatic relationships believe they need a man to take care of them, as they are not taught they are capable and believe the negative narrative coming from their destructive spouse. This prompts them to stay or seek a new relationship immediately post-divorce.
Three strategies for overcoming the post divorce triggers, discovering the truth and living confidently in our faith and belief in ourselves.

There is no escaping menopause. Every woman will experience this life-changing event, with varying degrees of disruption to our lives. Menopause can significantly impact relationships due to hormonal fluctuations causing mood swings, irritability, and changes in libido, leading to emotional strain, reduced intimacy, and potentially leading to marital breakdown. A survey found that 73% of women blamed menopause for their marriage breakdown, and 67% claimed it led to increased arguments and instances of domestic abuse. Treatment options and the type of professional who can help with hormone therapy.
How to initiate conversation with your male partner and what topics to cover.

So many times, the focus is on the wife’s perspective. But what if we explored divorce from the husband’s perspective? What if we attempt to understand his emotions, his pain and motives? Listen as Dr. Bernadette Atanga, a physician, speaker, and leadership coach with more than 30 years of experience in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics with special interest in Emotional Health and Cultural and author of Beneath the Armor: 8 Practical Strategies for Men to Embrace Vulnerability and Lead with Authentic Strength" shares her unique insight gleaned from her experiences with men going through divorce.
We often think of divorce as a male driven event, with many men moving on to new lives without a look back. But that is not the rule in every case. Divorce can be exceptionally challenging for men and it often leads to feelings of grief, loss, and a disruption of their identity and sense of purpose. Many men struggle to process the emotional fallout, as they grieve over the loss of their roles in the family, which can lead to depression and loneliness. Let’s take a step forward in deepening our understanding of divorce from the husband’s perspective. Dr. Atanga discusses:
The importance of men leading from the boardroom to the family room. Many times men are leaders at work but fail to carry that role through to the family.
The typical reaction of a man when the wife says she wants a divorce and how frequently they feel blindsided.
The advice men are given by friends and why that is harmful.
The increased risk of suicide by men going through divorce.
How unresolved emotions stemming for trauma in youth impact a man’s marriage.

Substance abuse is cited as the main factor in nearly 35 percent of divorces. Older adults are using opioids, alcohol, marijuana, and heroin at increasing rates. So much so, that it is being called the silent epidemic. Listen as Debbie Loudermilk, the Director of Outpatient Services for the Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, discusses why this is happening at increasing rates and who is most at risk.
Drug abuse among older adults is often hard to detect because the signs and symptoms mimic those of old age. Substance abuse can have a significant negative effect on diabetes, heart failure, and raise one's risk for heart attack.
Debbie shares the signals that someone is abusing drugs or alcohol, as well as how to go about discussing it with a loved one, if you suspect substance abuse is happening.

Understanding your options for the house when undergoing divorce is a significant challenge. Often, we make the decision on whether to keep or sell the house based on our emotions. Perhaps it is where the kids are living or where they grew up and you have a sentimental attachment, or maybe you are determined not to let your spouse keep it out of spite. The most important thing to know is there are major ramifications to your decision - from an asset allocation standpoint, tax implications, and future outlays for ongoing maintenance, insurance and taxes.
Listen in as Blake Watson, a licensed realtor and author of the book, “The Complete Guide to Buying a Home,” “A Guide to Selling Your Home After Divorce, ” and host of “Let’s Talk Chattanooga Real Estate” podcast shares:

Globally, nearly 1 in 3, or 30%, of women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner.
Survivors of domestic violence struggle to voice their experiences in a way that can rise above the often overpowering narrative of their abusers.
The scale of the problem leaves many without support. Human counselors, while passionate and dedicated, could never meet the needs of so many. That’s why the co-founders of Aimee Says decided to explore how to leverage the capabilities of advanced AI to understand and respond to common power and control dynamics seen in abusive relationships. Their goal was to see if this technology could offer relevant, empathetic responses to those seeking help.
Listen in as Anne Wintemute, co-founder, shares:
What domestic abuse is and the signs someone is suffering from domestic abuse.
Some of the common fears for women who are victims of domestic violence.
Common issues for women of domestic violence - i.e., physical, mental, substance abuse, self-harm.
Common barriers to women seeking support for domestic violence.
What you can share with Aimee about Domestic Abuse.

How AI levels the playing field for people divorcing a high conflict spouse.
