We swim in a sea of patriarchy. As Elena Aguilar points out, we live and breathe and uphold the oppressive system, and rarely realize we're doing it. Women are more emotional, right? More likely to break into hysterics and be completely irrational? Uhh, not so much. In today's episode we'll chat about how men and women are both gifted with emotions, yet how the hysterical women still haunts underlying beliefs and perceptions of women in today's society, including the church. We'll also talk microaggressions and how they look in society and church today. And let's not forget about all the emotions Jesus, the perfect human man, experienced while He walked the earth. Context matters. Knowing the culture and history of the time period of Paul's letters allows us to see things we wouldn't be able to see otherwise. It allows us to get into the heads of Paul's audience a bit. And, for me at least, it allows us to see why the household codes were revolutionary in a completely different way than we would expect in today's culture. Recently, I've been hearing and reading quite a few incorrect perceptions of what patriarchy is and how it manifests itself in the church. This incorrect understanding is actually also harmful because it allows patriarchy to continue while de-legitimizing the real concerns of people who are trying to draw attention to the problem.
