41 - Paterfamilias & Understanding the Cultural Context of the Household Codes
Context matters. Knowing the culture and history of the time period of Paul's letters allows us to see things we wouldn't be able to see otherwise. It allows us to get into the heads of Paul's audience a bit. And, for me at least, it allows us to see why the household codes were revolutionary in a completely different way than we would expect in today's culture. I think a good place to start is with understanding the paterfamilias, the male heads of household who had control in a way we don't recognize today (thank God).
Resources I Mention:
"The Roman Empire: Family Life" by PBS
Gordon Fee's article "The Cultural Context of Ephesians 5:18-6:9" in CBE International
Paul and Gender: Reclaiming the Apostle's Vision for Men and Women in Christ by Dr. Cynthia Long Westfall
The Ministry of Women in the New Testament: Reclaiming the Biblical Vision for Church Leadership by Dorothy A. Lee
Beverly Roberts Gaventa's lecture "Listening to Phoebe Read Romans"
Margaret Mowczko's article "Mutual Submission in Ephesians 5:21 and in 1 Peter 5:5"
Key Bible Verses: 1 Peter 3:1-4, James 1:19-27, Ephesians 5:21-33, Philippians 2
