Rather Be Playing 35: I Love Smash
That's right, you're not hallucinating: we do love Super Smash Bros Ultimate. And also, there is a brand new (old) episode of Rather Be Playing on your podcast app! Why new (old)? Well this is an episode we recorded way back in December! The three of us were actually together in the same room for a rare moment. Needless to say it has been a really busy January and half of February. But we're still here and have no intention of going anywhere anytime soon! If you're still subscribed to the cast, thank you so much. We'll get back on track and make it up to you with some fresh new episodes very shortly.

While it's been almost two months since we recorded this, not a ton has changed in the world. So it mostly still holds up. It's also our end of the year celebration episode, and it's before our #NoNewGames2018 pledge ended, so it is kinda timeless in the same way disco is. We think you should be able to hop in and feel right at home.

As for the episode itself, we celebrate the amazing year 2018 turned out to be. We take our victory laps as we look back on the games we finished and the backlog space we cleared. We also talk about recent purchases and near-future plans. Super Smash Bros Ultimate is one we couldn't ignore and we are loving it, if you couldn't guess from the episode title. We also talked a bit about Overcooked 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2, plus a ton more as we gush about the 2018 games we finished and loved.

Going forward you'll start seeing regular episodes again. Just bear with us as we clean out some cobwebs and freshen things up a bit. In the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we’ll talk about it on the next episode. You can also check out our Twitch stream at twitch.tv/ratherbeplaying. See you all in (hopefully) two weeks!

Rather Be Playing
Rather Be Playing 34: I Need Onions!
It’s that time of year again! Sales abound, games and new consoles wrapped and quietly sitting under many a tree, and awards handed out. This is when we look back on the year of games behind us, pick up anything we missed at a probably substantial discount (except Red Dead Redemption 2 which isn’t getting cheaper for a loooong time), and look forward to the games ahead. Oh and at long last, our pact and pledge to not buy any games for an entire year is nearly at an end! Can you believe it? How did it go, you ask? Well it went a whole lot better for Josh than Elliot or Stevo, that’s pretty clear. Pro-tip: don’t enter into a pact with Josh that limits gaming.

So in that spirit, we talk about the games we’re looking forward to! If you recall one of our loopholes to the pact was gifting games to one another on traditional gift-giving days. And with the biggest one of the year just around the corner, and even though it’s only a week before the end of the pact, we are ready for some gaming! So we discuss our Christmas wishlists as well as some of the games we did manage to play since the last episode. And then of course, we give our takes on The Game Awards.

Josh and Stevo start us off with a little-known game from a tiny struggling studio, Red Dead Redemption 2! Yep, Stevo got it as a birthday gift and Josh got it cause he has no respect for pacts. But nonetheless, they’ve got great things to say about it with their spoiler-free overview.

Stevo follows up with the recent indie hit, The Messenger, developed by Sabotage. If you’ve played Ninja Gaiden, this game will take you back. Next, Stevo played Dead Cells, the rogue-like/platformer hit that came out earlier this year by Motion Twin. This is one Josh and Elliot are dying to play so we’re all living vicariously through Stevo on this one. And lastly, to complete his Switch indie trifecta, Stevo rounds us out with Into the Breach. This game was developed by Subset Games, who you might remember from FTL fame, and they really did it again here if Stevo is to be believed.

Elliot played a couple games as well! As the only one of the hosts who didn’t play Red Dead Redemption 2, he had to plug his ears and dig into whatever could distract him. First off, he talked about Hidden Agenda by Supermassive Games, the choose-your-own-adventure interactive multiplayer group party game. How’s that for a summary? He played with a few friends and they... weren’t too excited about it, but Stevo maintains that it’s a great time with friends. Next, he played the mobile gatcha game Dragalia Lost, by Nintendo. He’s not usually a gatcha game guy, but found himself having a great time with it.

And to round things out we have a discussion about the The Game Awards 2018, which just aired a couple weeks ago. Did the winners deserve to win? Were the trailers worth the hype? Did the violinists put some clothes on? So many questions and so many answers. Almost as many as there were game streaming awards, which seems to be a thing now.

That should do it for episode 34! Stay tuned in two weeks for our live, in-person recording of episode 35! It’s a rare treat that we’re all able to get together to record and the holidays tends to be when that happens. In the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we’ll talk about it on the next episode. You can also check out our Twitch stream at twitch.tv/ratherbeplaying. See you all in two weeks!

Rather Be Playing
Rather Be Playing 33: Do all the Crimes
Hey hey! Remember us? We're either back or still here, depending on your proclivities. But here we are with a fresh new episode full of all the mostly latest games. We realize that a certain biggest game of the year recently released, but we'll get to that later. For now we're on the previous biggest games of the year, so if you're still playing those then this is the episode for you!

The star of the show is Spider-Man! Both Josh and Stevo have spent copious amounts of time on the game through their own respective loopholes, and they've got a lot of gushing to do on it. If you haven't played it then you can join Elliot in living vicariously through the podcast.

Josh does most of the heavy lifting for the rest of the games this week. He managed to play and finish the original Fallout, Diablo 2, and platinum Dragon Quest XI. Elliot and Stevo didn't stand a chance to keep up with him, but it makes for a lot of varied discussion. The Fallout and Diablo 2 are such timeless classics that are always fun to revisit, and Dragon Quest XI, is the critically acclaimed latest entry in the long-running beloved JRPG franchise.

We wrap things up with a deep dive into our current roulette pick, Beyond: Two Souls. We weren't too hot on it, but we dig in and unpack the layers to figure out where it went wrong. It's a spoiler-free chat, so feel free to hang around for it at the end.

And to top things off, we roll a new Backlog Roulette! Hopefully we end up with something we enjoy this time.

Rather Be Playing 32: Chrono (Heart)Break
We might be a week late, but we're got an extra long episode to make up for it! And you can thank Tacoma for that. That's right, we've finally brought our deep dive spoiler chat of Tacoma with us and it is a doozy. Our thoughts on this one are a bit mixed, so check it out at the tail end of the episode.

On the chance you have no interest in what we thought about Tacoma, you still get a full hour of classic game chat from all three of us. To start things off, Stevo's back! Woohoo! And he better have played extra games while he was away. This week he talks about the very popular platformer, Owlboy, and has a lot to say about it. It's an interesting talk about how the game got made and what he thought about it.

Back in January, Elliot added Rime to the backlog roulette and it went months without getting picked until he finally replaced it a few weeks ago. So this week, he decided to play it and make it his game of the week. So was it worth all this wait? Find out here.

Josh takes us on a journey into Darksiders via the new Warmastered Edition on PS4. Elliot's been trying to get these guys to play this game for years, so he's very excited to hear what Josh has to say. Have a listen and see if Elliot finally gets his long-sought vindication for his efforts.

To wrap up the episode, we have a fresh backlog roulette! Find out what we'll be playing over the next couple weeks. In the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we’ll talk about it on the next episode. Rather Be Playing
Rather Be Playing 31: Stevo = Luigi
Stevo is dead......... sick this week. So that leaves Elliot and Josh to carry the mantle! The show must go on, after all. So of course we took the opportunity to tell Stevo what to play.  Josh and Elliot have played some great games that Stevo is still depriving himself of and the rest of the show is here to set him straight. So the big Tacoma chat and new roulette will have to wait until next week. Stevo will be missed, but he'll be back next episode with an even better sense of Stevoness.

What else do we have? Well a whole bunch of Switch port demos came out recently and Josh and Elliot dug into them! Elliot broke into the Dragonball Fighter Z beta and loved a whole lot about it. Meanwhile, Josh played the Valkyria Chronicles 4 demo, so check out what he thought about it! Stevo really missed out on some quality jokes he could have made here. You snooze, you lose!

Aside from that, we talk about the fighting game genre and our histories with it. Why don't we play them more when we have so much fun with other multiplayer genres? Elliot pines for the Okami HD Switch port and both Josh and Elliot hype themselves up about Dead Cells, DOOM Eternal, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. 2019 can't come soon enough! But until then, come join in on the discussion!

Rather Be Playing 30: Octo Travels
Something special is in the air! Is it a blue moon? A shooting star? Mars at perigee? Even rarer! All three of us were spotted in the same room at the same time! So naturally we decided to play a ton of Rocket League and Towerfall. We may also have recorded our dirty thirty-eth episode. After many long travels, Josh and Elliot found themselves in the vicinity of a wild Stevo for a few brief hours. Have a listen to see what was borne from the historic reunion.

Okay, how about a hint? Josh is wrapping up his 100% playthrough of Octopath Traveler. Square Enix's old-school-flavored JRPG has hit a soft spot in Josh's heart and he has a lot to say about it. But not just that, Josh ALSO got in on the Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker action. Apparently visiting family nets some people tons of Nintendo eshop cards. As if two games weren't enough for the man, Josh continued on and played Mega Man X Legacy Collection. The guy is a beast and doesn't know how to not play games on his Switch.

Stevo has also been busy these last couple weeks, having finished off Hollow Knight. He still has a bit to go for 100% but the main job his done. His focus, however, was square on Nioh, Team Ninja's take on the Dark Souls formula. How did he like it? Only one way to find out!

And finally Elliot hit up some classic games this week when he came into possession of a NES Classic! Does this violate #NoNewGames2018? It's too close to call, but we'll give the tie to the runner. He's started up with the original Castlevania and loving the nostalgia trip.

That'll do for this week. Next week will be our breakdown of last week's roulette roll, Tacoma. In the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we’ll talk about it on the next episode. Rather Be Playing 29: Emotional Juices
Remember when we rolled Oxenfree in the roulette like a million years ago? Then there was E3 and travels, civilizations rose, civilizations fell, eons came and went. And that brings us to episode 29 wherein we finally finished Oxenfree! It was a great little game and we have a few things to say about it this week in our deep dive spoiler chat on everything from the mechanics to the story. It's the last thing we talk about so if you don't want to get spoiled, turn off the cast after the midway break.

What else? We're all still hopelessly obsessed with Hollow Knight now! Thanks to a few timely loopholes in our No New Games 2018 pledge, we've all been able to get it. We seriously think this might be one of the best games we've ever played and we can't put it down. Well except for Josh, who's 1000%-ed it of course. But check out Stevo and Elliot as they tweet about their experiences playing through it.

Josh was also able to get a hold of Square Enix's latest JRPG, Octopath Traveler. Since Oxenfree and Hollow Knight are old new for him, he's been going all in with Octopath and thoroughly enjoying it. He gives us a nice detailed breakdown of the game and its mechanics.

And last but not least, it's time for a fresh Backlog Roulette! Oxenfree is done so Stevo gets to pick a new game to toss into the ring and then we roll! What will we be playing for the next two weeks? The answer is in this episode! In the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we’ll talk about it on the next episode. Rather Be Playing 28: Où Est La Toilette?
Happy Birthday America! And happy belated to Canada, our increasingly attractive cousin to the north! Elliot was in Montréal for Canada Day and he spent it playing Switch on la toilette! But now we're all back in the states for our favorite excuse to grill various meats and set off explosives. Stay safe out there! Actually, don't even go out. Stay in with us and play more videogames!

Speaking of, everyone's chipping away at Hollow Knight.... while we should be playing Oxenfree. But hey at least we're playing! Beyond that, Stevo crushed Bethesda's Prey since last we spoke and he is positively glowing about it. He also managed to snatch Minute, an indie game with a fascinating concept.

Elliot and Josh played God of War thanks to some very fortunate loopholes. Elliot's still playing, but Josh already has a platinum trophy and of course they both can't stop raving about it. Elliot also tried out the mobile editions of Fortnite and PUBG and enjoyed them way more than he thought he would. Josh also played the new Octopath Traveler demo and, keeping with his JRPG kick, went on to play Cosmic Star Heroine.

His gaming thirst still unquenched, Josh also-also started up another playthrough of Final Fantasy V for this year's Four Job Fiesta. Check out his stream when you get a chance, it's for a great cause. Donations this year go to benefit the Child's Play charity, which you can read about at childsplaycharity.org. The goal this year is $25,000, and you can find out more about the 'fiesta' at fourjobfiesta.com.

Next week we'll be talking about Oxenfree and rolling for a brand new game to play! In the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we’ll talk about it on the next episode. Rather Be Playing: E3 2018 – Part 2
And we're keeping the conference party rolling with E3 2018 Part 2! It's only been a few days, but it's E3! We had a lot to say and two weeks was too long to wait for the exciting conclusion to our E3 coverage! But that's not the only thing going on! What's that? More sports? Sorry, but yes. It's the World Cup! It only comes around once every four years, so it's a cause for excitement. The hosts' home countries didn't qualify, but we still get to have fun with bandwagon teams. Let's go Mexicooooo!

Aaaand back to video games. Last week we covered, with great enthusiasm, the Microsoft, Bethesda, and EA conferences. So this week we're coming in hot with our brilliant takes on the Devolver, Square Enix, Sony, Ubisoft, PC Gaming, and Nintendo conferences! There were a lot of exciting announcements, jaw-dropping demos, and wackadoodle good times. What more could a young gaming podcast want?

Did you watch the show? What were your favorite moments? Do you have a Game of the Show award to hand out? Drop us a line and let us know! Whatever you thought of it, we had a great time. It may not have been as explosive as some previous E3s, but we certainly can't complain. In the meantime, leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we’ll talk about it on the next episode. You can also check out our Twitch stream at twitch.tv/ratherbeplaying or our YouTube channel. See you all in two weeks as we return to our regular programming of talking about old games and lamenting that we can't play new ones!

Rather Be Playing: E3 2018 – Part 1
Right now, with a video game podcast based in Washington, DC, it is an exceptionally exciting time. Our city has its first ever hockey championship, and it's E3 2018 time baby! We promise not to talk sports too much, but we had to mention it. It's a pretty big deal for our little town, whether you like sports or hockey or none of the above. Let's Go Caps!

Now that that's out of the way, how about those E3 conferences? So much stuff to go over, and so little time. I don't know how we did this all in a single 2.5 hour episode last year, but this year we've got to split this show up into two long episodes. This is part one and we talk about the announcements and conferences from the first couple days. This includes the EA, Microsoft, and Bethesda showcases, as well as any particularly exciting pre-show announcements and news. Those three conferences were pretty dense compared to the rest, so we feel like it's a good place to split them.

Part 2 will come early next week and feature the Devolver, Square Enix, Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft, and PC Gaming showcases. It's been one hell of an E3 so far and we can't wait to see what the rest of the show will bring. It's not gonna be easy holding onto this #nonewgames2018 pledge. Can we do it? Come along and find out with us! In the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we’ll talk about it on the next episode. Rather Be Playing
Rather Be Playing 27: Happy Belated
Have you ever forgotten your own birthday? We sure did. Happy belated anniversary to us! Last week was our one-year anniversary and we missed it from all the excitement talking about playing old games. Can you blame us? And this week we're back with even more. We've all been chipping away at our most recent roulette game, Borderlands 2, and really enjoying it. But that's not all!

Josh has been playing the popular ROM hack that randomizes Super Metroid and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and combines them into a single game. It's called the Super Metroid and A Link to the Past Crossover Item Randomizer. It's ridiculously absurd and Josh is obsessed. He's also put some time into the GBA game Fire Emblem. It's his first foray into the series and he's excited.

Elliot played the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI almost compulsively for the last week. I think we've found his weakness. He jumped onto a free login campaign that started in late May and never looked back. He'd been active in the game for a few years back when it first launched, but hadn't played in a while and it's changed a lot. It's like riding a bike though, right?

Stevo's kickstarted game, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, will be out later this year and the developers have released the spinoff game, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, for free to backers. And he's been going to town on it and loving it. He's also got a glowing review of the somewhat little-known Vita game, Severed. Lastly, he's still chipping away at Final Fantasy X. He's not having the best time yet, but Josh and Elliot leave him with some words of encouragement.

And to round us out we have another letter from beloved listener, Spider. It's a great one, thanks again Spider! Keep them coming. We close out with a couple of Roulettes! It's been two weeks since we rolled Borderlands 2 so it's time for a new one. What will it be? Then Josh decides to let the sacred RNG decide what game he's going to play on his own for the next two weeks. In the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we’ll talk about it on the next episode. Rather Be Playing 26: Red Deadwood Redemption
What kind of Rockstar gamer are you? Do beeline from story quest to story quest until the end or do you go for every sidequest, collectible, and achievement? Or do you just see how many cars you can steal and people you can murder before you're caught? With Red Dead Redemption 2 on the way out, we were wondering. And we also played some Red Dead Redemption to hype ourselves up! Stevo crushed it last week and Josh is just wrapping it up. It's going to be a wild west episode!

Josh also played and tried to explain Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. If you're looking for an ultra trippy, end of the world, heaven vs hell, modern urban fantasy turn based RPG that will make you die a lot, it could be right up your alley. On a lighter note, he also played Hollow Knight and is loving it. As with any metroidvania, how could it not be good?

Stevo finished up his maiden run of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night! It's his latest classic game, and given how much we all love metroidvanias you can guess how he felt about it. And Elliot is still churning away on Xenogears. A letter from our friend Spider illuminated a few things about Xenogears that the fog of memory muddled up, and it's pretty eye opening. Thanks for the letter and for casting one of our favorite games in a new light for us.

Lastly, we talk about how we're doing with our No New Games 2018 pledge now that we're five months in. Elliot wrote a piece about it last week that you can check out here. We discuss the games coming out now that we wish we could play. Stevo closes us out with his own personal roulette to help him decide what to play next. In the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we'll talk about it on the next episode. Rather Be Playing 25: The Most Terrible Game
I mean not terrible as in bad, but terrible as in 'hoooooly hell go easy on me!' Of course we're talking about Cuphead here. The game you hate to love and love to hate, but that makes you love it even more. And despite how hard and unforgiving it is, we finished it! I mean Josh finished it! Stevo is inches away and Elliot is somewhere out near the beginning. But it still counts. So that means this week we retire Cuphead and replace it's spot in the roulette with a new contender. What game will it be? What game will we roll to play for the next four weeks? It's all in this week's episode!

The rest of the line up is drawn from a well of distilled nostalgia. Stevo is just about through Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Don't you just love it when he plays the old classics and loves them as much as you did when you first played them? And along similar lines, Elliot has been replaying Xenogears for the first time since his first time. How has it aged? Is the text still slow now that we're older and can't read as well? Yeah, it is, but he's loving it anyway. Josh is also tap dancing his way down memory lane with Xenogears, so listen as they share a moment of fanboy gushing. Hope you brought an umbrella.

While we're soaked in nostalgia, we list our own #GameStruck4, the meme from last week that is now long dead. The meme asks you to name the four games that define your love of gaming the best. It's a fun bit and it takes us way back to our fond beginnings.

Then we round out the cast with a boat load of one-sentence news. A lot has happened in the last two weeks! So find out what we think and in the meantime, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we'll talk about it on the next episode. Rather Be Playing
Rather Be Playing 24: Plot to Kill
Have you ever wanted to rule the world? How good do you think you would be at it? Elliot got to find out with a very tumultuous go at Crusader Kings II. How did he do? How many people did he befriend? How many did he plot to kill? Tune in to his epic tale of intrigue, betrayal, and mostly cowardice.

But Elliot isn't the only one playing old games. Josh took another shot at Parasite Eve to see how well it's held up these last few decades. Remember that game? Aside from being the brightest spotlight our favorite powerhouse of the cell will probably ever get, it was also a pretty groundbreaking video game. So if you've played it before, enjoy his trip down memory lane. And if you haven't, you're in for a real treat.

Stevo tops us off with Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, which he's finally finished. He's got some deep takes about it and the message it conveys. It's an important game for many reasons, to be sure, and something we highly recommend everyone experiences soon. He's got Josh and Elliot ready to boot it up, so this might not be the last you hear of it with us.

And of course, we're all chipping away at Cuphead, our roulette roll from last week. And it's haaaaaaard. We heard it would be. We knew what we were getting into before we started, so why did we do this to ourselves? We do get to hash out advice towards the end of the episode, so maybe our next run will go better and we can have it beat by next episode. Maybe?

Until then, come join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we'll talk about it on the next episode. You can also check out our Twitch stream at twitch.tv/ratherbeplaying. See you all in two weeks!

Rather Be Playing
Rather Be Playing 23: Broken in Some Way
It’s a new fortnight and a new episode! This week we have a lot to cover. Josh is back and has a lot to say about many games. So where was he all this time? Buying a new PS3 and making up for all the lost time since he last had one. On his menu we’ve got the likes of Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne because as we remember from the first episode, Josh likes pain. He also played some Drakengard 3, which sounds, well, I think we’ll just let you all decide for yourselves.

How about the rest of us? Stevo gets to learn a lot from Josh and all the games he’s never heard of. You can live vicariously through his wonder and amazement. But he also did a bit of playing of his own. Splatoon 2 and Muramasa The Demon Blade round out his fortnight and he enjoyed them!

Elliot has also been playing Splatoon 2,and he’s well into the multiplayer modes. He also played a bit of 4-player coop game, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and is loving it... dangerously :)

So what’s missing from these titles? No one played the roulette game, Observer. Alas, it may have just not meant to be. So this week Stevo makes a fresh pick to replace its spot on the roulette and we roll for a new game! What are we going to be playing for the next 4 weeks? Tune in and find out! In the meantime, feel free to join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we'll talk about it on the next episode. You can also check out our Twitch stream at twitch.tv/ratherbeplaying. See you all in two weeks!

Rather Be Playing 22: Origin Story with Carlos
It's another fortnight, another episode. But this fortnight we're actually talking about Fortnite! Unfortunately Josh couldn't make it into the recording booth this week, but in his place we've got something we think you'll enjoy. Elliot's cousin Carlos stops by on short notice to dish the wisdom on Fortnite, as well as a bunch of the other big games we've been missing out on this year. We talk Monster Hunter World, Destiny 2, Mega Man X, Super Castlevania IV, Observer, and we touch on a bunch more.

It's an episode loaded with games, but we also get to hear some personal stories of Elliot and Carlos growing up. Nothing like family to keep you grounded. Even on your own podcast. Thanks Carlos! So tune in to hear Elliot's video game origin story, Stevo Irish-splain St. Paddy's day, and Carlos talk about all the big games we haven't been playing this year. We might need loopholes to play 2018's releases but he does not, so get it while it's hot!

Hopefully next week Josh will be back, and even more hopefully we'll all be done with our backlog roulette game, Observer. And hopefulliest of all, we'll be rolling a new game to play over the next couple fortnights. Now that we're done with our travels, it's time to get back to the logs. In the meantime, feel free to join in on the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast, or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we'll talk about it on the next episode. You can also check out our Twitch stream at twitch.tv/ratherbeplaying and Carlos's stream at twitch.tv/bruticus02. See you all in the next fornight!

Rather Be Playing
Rather Be Playing 21: Semicolons
Welcome to another week of playing lots of games! Not only that, but we're shaking things up with our format too. In fact, we're putting together a few new ideas here so pardon our dust for the next few episodes. Hopefully it settles soon. This week we're doing the news discussion in rapid-fire one-sentence blurbs. We figure it's mostly stuff you've heard, and since we're playing more games these days we don't have as much airtime for other things. But we weren't all sold on just eliminating it entirely. And of course, us being us, we've found some questionable loopholes around this with our old pals the semicolons!

Aside from that, we played lots of games! Elliot finished Metroid: Samus Returns and SteamWorld Dig 2! Stevo streamed his triumph over Celeste on the Twitch channel. He's also playing The Witness to help him relax. I suppose there are worse games for calming the mind, but Josh and Elliot are baffled at the choice. And with even more time to spare, Stevo also played Yakuza 0! All three of us are making progress in Observer, the backlog game we rolled last episode. Will we have it done in time? It's gonna be close! Josh played a little Deus Ex Mankind Divided to top it off.

But don't blame Josh for not playing much this week, he was double podcasting! Check out his guest appearance on the next episode of Same Team Y'all! We're excited to see how he fares with Tess and Eric, so check him out on Friday. In the meantime, join the discussion! Leave a comment, tweet us at @rbpcast,or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we'll talk about it on the next episode. Use all the semicolons you want. See you in two weeks!

Rather Be Playing
Rather Be Playing 20: I’m a Weiner
This episode cuts the fat and serves up all the meat. We talk 100% games we've been playing this week. Not even any news stories make it in to the discussion. Speaking of those games, remember our roulette from two weeks ago? Uncharted: The Lost Legacy? That's right, we all finished it in time so we get to do our deep dive and break it down to its nuts and bolts. And best of all, it's a spoiler-free chat baked right into the main episode. No "stick around until after" business. It's all there for everyone. So no excuses!

But that's not all we played! Elliot polished off his Super Mario Run campaign. It's a pretty short game, but it sparks a pretty big discussion about mobile games, how valid they are in this medium, and what "infinite runner" means. You'll learn a lot. Stevo has started playing Gaming's latest sweetheart, Celeste, and he's got a lot of glowing things to say about it. And Josh has started to die repeatedly on Dark Souls 3, so help him out when he's streaming on twitch.tv/ratherbeplaying and give him some tips.

We've also got a short talk on streaming games! There's many ways to do it, and many people to tell you how they're all wrong. But we think there's no wrong way to do it, and we're going to be shaking up our formula going forward. The good news is this should mean more streaming! So keep checking for us on that Twitch channel!

And lastly, it's time for a new Backlog Roulette! We choose a new game to take Uncharted's place, and then roll for a new game to play! We'll be playing this one over the next episode and then talking about it on the one after! Don't be shy and join the discussion! Leave a comment or shoot us an email at questions@ratherbecast.com and we'll talk about it on the next episode. See you in two weeks!

Rather Be Playing
Rather Be Playing 19: Final Fantasy DOO-DOO
After the last couple of episodes being loaded with all these games being played left and right and up and down, we're calming things down a bit this week. We're slowing our roll and taking a more measured approach to these fine delicacies we call the 2017 game lineup. Don't get us wrong, we did play some stuff, most of it Dissidia-related. But there was a whole lot of news to talk about this week too, so we went hard in the paint with that. From rumors of Microsoft buying EA to 2018's most anticipated title getting hit with a delay, we've got a loaded episode full of hot takes and cold calculations.

The main gaming event this episode is mobile gaming! What? Yep! Both Stevo and Josh played some mobile games and they raved about them and are recommending them to everyone. Should we heed their advice? Have a listen and let them sell you on Dissidia: Final Fantasy Opera Omnia and Hidden Agenda! Elliot has begun to die profusely in Demon's Souls, so maybe we'll just leave him in the corner there until he's done swearing at the walls.

We also talk a bit about the Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT open beta that recently ended. Elliot spent some time with it when he wasn't being repeatedly killed in Boletaria. He enjoyed it, but it's hard not to enjoy whatever you play after enduring hours of ruthless punishment. So maybe take it with a grain of salt. Or maybe hear what he as to say and decide for yourself!

On the next episode we'll all be done with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, so get ready for a full discussion on that. We'll also be rolling our next Backlog Roulette game! See you in two weeks!

Rather Be Playing 18: What Remains of Metal Gear
We are hitting the ground running with our #NoNewGames2018 resolution. All told, the three of us finished five different games! And we played many more, and we're not even done with January here! We've got some overlap in these games, so there's plenty to talk about. Not the least of which is the game all three of us finished, What Remains of Edith Finch, developed by Giant Sparrow. We talk a little about it at the start, but then we dive into a deep spoiler-filled discussion at the very end of the episode. So if you haven't played it and you want to play it, stop when we sign off at the 1:09:15 mark. If you haven't played it and you don't plan to, then come along for the ride. It's well worth it!

Aside from Edith Finch, we have a bunch of news to cover! How cool does that Nintendo Labo look? Does playing the Metal Gear Survive beta make you feel like you're cheating on Kojima? Are you ready to play Dark Souls on the toilet? We answer all those questions, so if you have any others ask away at questions@ratherbecast.com.

And that's not even all! This week also marks the return of Backlog Roulette! How long has it been? This time we're going to take it a little easy and roll for just one game and that will be the next game that all three of us will be playing. We'll ramp it up later on if we can at least handle this one.

And that should do it for episode 18. See you in two weeks, and until then tweet us at @rbpcast!
