Pints & Popcorn: The Return

Pints & Popcorn is back!

After a long hiatus, Shea & Dave are ready to dive back into some movie chat alongside a tasty beverage & some popcorn. Before we start diving back into some of the usual individual movie pods, we thought we'd have a general chat about a bunch of movie stuff.

- Going back to the movies post pandemic, what we love/what we don't.
- The Barbenheimer phenomenon!
- Solidarity with the strike actions of the WGA & SAG-AFTRA, middle finger to the evil studios.
- Five of our favourite movies we discovered in the last two years.

As per usual, we talk for far too long and have many drinks, but it's a worthwhile journey if you have the time.

NEXT WEEK: The Nice Guys (2016)

North Dallas Forty (1979)
With this wild year of 2020 actually giving us a football season, this episode Shea takes Dave on a trip down memory lane with a sports favourite from his youth: North Dallas Forty. Incredibly underrated & ahead of its time in many ways, Shea and Dave discuss everything from the powerhouse performance from Nick Nolte as our protagonist Phil Elliot, the world of 1970's football, the many ways it still reflects our current game and attitudes towards athletes - as well as the usual existential tangents that a podcast + wine will take us down. Throw the pads on, take whatever painkilling concoction is required to get through one of our pods, and join us for a chat on all things North Dallas Forty.

1917 (2019)
Recording on Armistice Day 2020, Shea & Dave revisit the recent groundbreaking World War One film, 1917. We get around the incredible story the film interweaves amongst its seemingly simple premise, with the stories of ordinary people thrown into extraordinary circumstances paramount to the films power. The emotional impact the film had on us is discussed as well as we recall our experience of seeing the film in theatres. And of course, we would be remiss if we didn't talk about the technical feats the film achieved with its unique style, and the incredible behind the scenes insights about just how they did it. What an achievement. Raise your pints.

Sinister (2012) + Bliss (2019)
Dave & Shea continue their descent into the madness of horror, with the madness of chasing dreams & fame through the prism of horror with the films Sinister & Bliss. Sinister does a fantastic job of getting the heart rate pumping (scientifically, somewhat controversially, proven) & getting the hairs raised with a creepy & dark entity preying upon Ethan Hawke & family as his character of Ellison Oswalt tries desperately to write another best seller as his past glories fade rapidly. Bliss deals with an artist struggling to stay afloat as creative blocks send Dora Madison's Dezzy Donahue back to the vices of hard drugs & alcohol to try to spark a creative flame. It works, but it also sparks something much more dark & sinister inside her... Two very different films with a common theme, & don't we just love getting into them! Check it guys.

After Midnight (2019) + The Battery (2012)
The first of THREE Halloween Double-Feature specials this week, Shea & Dave dive into the indie film world for two under appreciated classics, After Midnight & The Battery. We talk everything from the incredible films created from tiny budgets, the depth of writing infusing every day themes of love, loss, friendship, & heartache into films that also include battles against very real existential threats alongside the human issues at play which could ultimately prove the downfall. Jeremy Gardner, Christian Stella, and the rest of the crews involved in these films deserve absolute commendation for creating two of the more thought provoking films in the horror genre to have come out in the last decade, & it was a pleasure to discuss them over a few beers. No Gorilla Farts though. No need for tasting going blind.

Fargo (1996)
Gonna be a cold pod. Ya darn tootin' Celebrating Season 4 of Fargo dropping, Shea & Dave go back to where it all began with the Coen Brothers darkly comedic 1996 classic: Fargo. We talk about the performances, including Frances McDormand in her first Oscar winning role. The story and what it has to say about our humanity, and the imperfections and grey areas of good vs evil. The incredible writing, the beautiful cinematography, the pitch perfect Carter Burwell score. We fuckin love this movie, you betcha.

It’s not a coincidence that the targets are shaped like podcasters and not couples. Shea & Dave try to wrap their heads around one of the most original, wacky, odd, disturbing, funny, heartbreaking etc etc films to have come out in the past 20 years - Yorgos Lanthimos' 2015 original, The Lobster. Delving into the themes of dystopia, love, life, heartbreak, societal expectations of relationships, our own expectations, the things people will do... yikes, like shit - there's a lot going on & we hit it all, definitely with a few necessary pints. Join us in trying to unravel the complex beauty of The Lobster.

The Babadook (2014)
If it's in a word, or if it's in a look, you can't get rid of the Babadook... nor can you get rid of our episode this week, as Shea & Dave discuss the 2014 Jennifer Kent horror film 'The Babadook' An incredible film that is about so much more than simply a haunting, we discuss the themes that make the monster, the brilliant performances, the wonderful set design, the smart directing & writing, & the wildly inventive creature design. We also talk about the unique journey of Jennifer Kent to the career of directing. For a low budget Aussie film, this one took the world by storm in it's incredibly originality and it was a privilege to talk about it. BABADOOOOOOOOK & CHILL. ** NOTE ON THE EPISODE - Technical issues prevented Dave from adding the usual SPOILER ALERT at the beginning, as well as the trailer and other usual sounds. It is just the audio from our day of recording the episode (which is still quality, of course). I will update the posting when I can figure out that crap.
