This is an extraordinary story of a father and son—two remarkable men whose lives were forever changed by the impact of a stroke. Wayne transformed his life, made a full recovery, and embraced a new way of living. Wes, on the other hand, continues to navigate the profound and challenging effects of his own stroke—an experience that has been both life-altering and deeply moving.
Their journey is one of resilience, love, and unwavering support. It will stop you in your tracks, stir your soul, and reveal the powerful bond between a father and his son. Wes is still on his path to recovery, bolstered by faith, encouragement, and the enduring strength of those around him.
As fellow stroke survivor John Shephard puts it: "It’s all about keeping the faith and moving forward."
A heartfelt thank you to Wes for courageously sharing his story—his thoughts, his emotions, and his determination to keep going. And immense admiration for both Wayne and Wes, who continue to inspire with their strength and example.

The Taourarte Educational Charitable Trust was born out of a simple act of kindness. Maurice Valarino, along with a group of fellow travelers, found themselves stranded in the remote village of Taourarte during a violent storm, unable to return to Chefchaouen. The villagers welcomed them with warmth and shelter, offering safety when it was most needed.
During their stay, the group learned that only the young boys of the village had access to education. Touched by the community’s generosity and moved by the gender disparity in schooling, they decided to give back. What began as a moment of refuge became the foundation for lasting change: a charity dedicated to supporting the education of young girls in Taourarte.
This is a story of gratitude, compassion, and the powerful impact of giving back.

It’s always such a pleasure to interview people and find out what drives them. This week On the Sofa with Rouge the conversation is about birds, bats caves and ornithology.
Dr. Stewart Finlayson is a Gibraltar-based naturalist, evolutionary biologist, and wildlife photographer with a Ph.D. in Life Sciences. Passionate about ornithology, bats, and caves, he has published extensively on Gibraltar’s natural history and recently co-authored a book on Gibraltar’s geography.
School wasn’t the right fit for him, and the system didn’t work in his favor, but through college, he completed his A-levels and got involved in youth and community work. Discovering that he had ADHD and dyslexia helped him better understand himself and ultimately thrive in the sciences.
Now a key figure in Gibraltar’s conservation efforts, Dr. Finlayson offers a fascinating insight into the wildlife and landscapes of this unique region.
