They called her the Bitch of Buchenwald, she was Lady Commandant, the wife of the Nazi Commandant Karl Koch. Her and her husband’s crimes were so brutal, that even the Nazis felt that they went over the top in their sadistic cruelty. Ilse in particular was found terrifyingly fascinating, as she allegedly ordered lampshades, book covers and other items to be made out of human skin.

Nazi controlled Germany is full of human atrocities, the T4 Program, the predecessor to the terrible Holocaust, was one of the worst ones. The most vulnerable and helpless people were being targeted. Those who had cognitive disabilities, the elderly, disabled children, mentally ill patients were sent in droves to gas chambers where they were executed silently, quickly, their ashes returned to their families with a death certificate with a fake cause of death listed. The killing of these innocent individuals devolved into them being shot in their beds, killed without any second thought or mercy. The reason that they were targeted? They were seen as undesirables, people who did not belong in the Nazi’s eugenic vision, to the Nazis these people were simply life unworthy of life. But who gets to decide who is worthy of life and who isn’t?

Personal Note: Thanks for all my listeners for sticking around, I recently had an unexpected death in the family, so the podcast had been put on the back burner for a bit, but I am now back and ready than ever to get you more content!
It was a warm summer night during July in Rome, Italy. The young, teenage grandson of the richest man in the world, was enjoying his night out. Before he even realized what happened, in the next moment, a bag was put over his head and he was dragged off the street into a waiting vehicle. Hours later, Paul, found himself disoriented, in a place he had never been. Meanwhile from a short distance, he could hear his kidnappers on the phone, negotiating with his grandfather, J. Paul Getty Sr. In 1951, over 20 years prior, Getty had been labeled the richest man in the world by Forbes Magazine. Getty had all the money in the world, yet he refused to pay a single cent to rescue his grandson.

Homosexuality has been prevalent in humankind since the moment we walked on this earth, but it has taken a long time for society to come to terms with the fact that homosexuality is biological, one does not choose to be gay, they simply are born that way. The United States has a long and terrifying history when it comes to LGBTQ rights. While the LGBTQ community has constantly fought for the simple rights of being treated like human beings, they have been met with backlash at every step.

Welcome to episode two of the LGBTQ rights movement, I highly suggest you listen to the first episode before getting into the second one. In this episode, I talk about everything from the Stonewall Uprising that was a huge catalyst in change brought to the LGBTQ community, as well as the fight that Anita Bryant brought to the LGBTQ community and the war that Harvey Milk brought right back to her, and the tragic fate that he faced at the hands of a man who used the excuse of too much sugary foods for the reason that he killed an innocent man.

Welcome to episode three of the LGBTQ right movement, I suggest you go back and listen to the other two episodes before getting into the third. In this episode, I talk about the incredible and stigmatizing effect that the HIV/AIDS crisis had on society. Including a woman named Ruth Coker Burks who in an incredible show of love, faith and kindness took care of men who were on death’s door from AIDS. I also discuss the back and forth laws made about allowing gay people and transgender people to serve in the military. While it’s the 2020’s, the LGBTQ community is still fighting for the basic human rights that they deserve.

She was only 19 years old when she was burned at the stake, her brain not even fully developed, but she knew she had a mission. Three saints came to her, telling her that she had a divine purpose from God, to restore Charles of Valois to his rightful throne, as the king of France. She did exactly what she had set out to do, and this angered the English, who at the time were in the middle of the Hundred Years War with France. They captured her, put her on trial and determined that the only course of action that they would take, was to execute her.

John Wilkes Booth will simply go down in history as the man who assassinated Lincoln. But there is much more to Booth than what is just on the surface. He was a talented actor, considered one of the best actors of the 19th century. He was so popular that women had to be held back from literally ripping the clothes off his body as he walked out of the stage and towards his hotel. He was dark, handsome and charming, but he was also a man obsessed. He thought that Lincoln was going to make himself into the King of America, that, Booth as a white man was entitled to own slaves. Most of all, he knew in his heart, if he killed Abraham Lincoln then he would be lauded as a hero. His name would be shouted from every rooftop as glory would shine upon him. But that never happened. Instead he died, slowly, painfully from a gunshot wound that came from a Union soldier’s rifle. Well... allegedly anyway. There is also a theory that Booth didn’t actually die that night, that he got a secret password from Vice President Andrew Johnson that allowed him to escape far away from Washington D.C.

While most people knows the story of the Lincoln Assassination, the culprit, John Wilkes Booth shooting Lincoln in the back of the head, shouting something and then jumping out of the theater box and running away; most don’t know about the other man in the box that night, Henry Rathbone. Henry tried in vain to stop Booth from escaping, but Booth sliced his arm and Rathbone nearly died from blood loss. Henry spent the rest of his life wracked with guilt, wondering if he could have done anything more to save the president. The guilt ate at his psyche, slowly chipping away at it until paranoia and fear riddled his every thought and in a complete psychotic breakdown, he made an irrevocable error that ended the life of the person he loved most in the world.

No one could envy the life Mary Todd Lincoln led. She endured the deaths of three of her four children and witnessed her husband’s murder. After Lincoln’s death, Mary struggled to escape the sorrow that left her hopeless and lost. Even turning to her last surviving son, Robert, didn’t help. He did his best to comfort her, but her mental illness made him fear she might harm herself, so he had her institutionalized. Mary didn’t take this lying down—she fought to regain her freedom and succeeded. She later turned to spiritualism, seeking comfort in the past and trying to reach her dead sons and husband.

Mary Todd Lincoln had the misfortune of being the most unpopular first lady in United States history. Not only was she constantly criticized for her every action, she also suffered the loss of two young children, and witnessed the murder of her beloved husband. Mary’s struggles with her mental health were splashed across newspapers, articles accusing her of lavish spending, and daring to simply show grief in public, while millions of people lost their loved ones in the midst of an aggressive, bloody and expensive war.

J. Marion Sims, known as the "father of modern gynecology," was a controversial figure, experimenting on enslaved women without anesthesia. Along side him were three significant figures in his quest to cure the vesico-vaginal fistula, they were Betsey, Lucy and Anarcha, enslaved women who suffered from the disorder itself and helped him as he experimented on them, as they experienced horrific pain and agony along the way. They have been forgotten to history but they should be remembered as the Mothers of Modern Gynecology. J. Marion Sims’ made huge leaps in surgical options for women suffering from this debilitating disorder that made them into social outcasts. Sims would be nothing without Betsey, Anarcha and Lucy, his subsequent legacy, painting him as a hero, his contributions to medicine are overshadowed by ethical concerns surrounding consent and exploitation. The experiences of these women highlight the often overlooked history of medical experimentation on enslaved individuals, prompting reflection on the intersection of race, power, and healthcare in America's past and present.

During the 1930’s Jewish illustrators and artists were struggling to find work due to Anti-Semitism, in order to make some income and make ends meet, they created superheroes. Those who could rise above the regular humans and fight against the darkness, and evil. Superman in particular, had an enormous impact in American propaganda during World War II and was frequently shown on the cover of comic books, beating up Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini. Superman forced these villains to face the consequences of their terrible actions. In this episode, I discuss the comic book cultural revolution that was created directly from the rejection and pain that these Jewish artists faced every day during the early parts of the 20th century.

The 1930s Golden Age of Comic Books marked the rise of iconic superheroes like Superman and Batman, shaped by the experiences of Jewish creators. Facing discrimination, Jewish writers and artists found opportunity in the comic book industry. Superman, introduced in Action Comics #1 (1938) by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster—children of Jewish immigrants—became a symbol of justice, with strong parallels to the story of Moses. These Jewish comic book creators used their work to combat anti-Semitism and Nazi propaganda, famously depicting Superman defeating Hitler. Other Jewish creators, such as Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, created Captain America to stand against fascism. These superhero stories captured the dual-identity struggles of Jewish immigrants in America, emphasizing justice, sacrifice, and the fight against evil—key themes in Jewish American history and comic book culture.

On January 15ᵗʰ, 1919, a massive tank holding 2.3 million gallons of molasses had exploded, flooding Boston's north end docks with sticky molasses. Purity Distilling Company had been warned several times that the tank was creaking, leaking molasses, but the company ignored these warnings, until it was too late. Thousands of gallons flowed across Boston’s North End, resulting in several deaths. Rumor has it that on warm days, one can still smell the molasses.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, also known as the "Six Triple Eight," played a pivotal role during WWII, ensuring soldiers received critical mail that boosted morale. Composed of 855 Black women from the Women's Army Corps (WAC), this battalion, led by Major Charity Adams, tackled a massive backlog of undelivered mail in Europe under grueling conditions, including segregation, inadequate facilities, and warzone threats. Their groundbreaking work cleared years of mail in just months, showcasing their efficiency and resilience. Despite facing racism both abroad and at home, their efforts were instrumental in sustaining soldier morale. Post-war, their legacy was overlooked, but recent honors, such as the 2021 Congressional Gold Medal and Tyler Perry’s 2024 Netflix drama starring Kerry Washington, highlight their historic contributions. The Six Triple Eight’s story exemplifies perseverance and the fight for equality, embodying their motto, "No mail, low morale."

It was a balmy summer evening on July 18th, 1969 and Ted Kennedy was driving home from a party with a companion of his, Mary Jo Kopechne. In a tragic turn of events, Ted ended up driving his car off the road an into a pond, where it sunk to the bottom of the body of water. He was able to escape, but Mary Jo was stuck in the car. Even with repeated attempts to save her life, he was unable to reach her. Strangely enough, he waited until nearly 10 hours later to report the incident to the police. Long after any potential alcohol would have left his system. The Chappaquiddick Incident lead to the death of a young woman whose political future was bright and full of promise and brought an end to any future aspirations that Ted Kennedy had of becoming president.

The Romanian Revolution of 1989 was a pivotal uprising that marked the end of Nicolae Ceaușescu's oppressive communist regime. Sparked by protests in Timișoara, it quickly spread nationwide, culminating in Ceaușescu's dramatic fall and execution alongside his wife, Elena. This historic event not only liberated Romania from decades of dictatorship but also symbolized the broader collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, leaving a lasting impact on the nation's political and social landscape.
