This week on the Modcast I shakedown the breakdown with Vancouver's own power pop sensations Star Collector. Vic and Steve join me to dish the dirt on the making of the band's latest album, Everything Must Go!They're not holding anything back, the band puts it all out there for their seventh full length release. Overall the album has a strong, modern rock vibe with hints of the influences you'd expect surfacing all throughout from The Who to Big Star to Teenage Fanclub. And while those echoes are there, the album stands on its own songwriting with hooks aplenty and lyrics from clever to emotional. The title track is loud, glitzy and anthemic and will have audiences bouncing along, driven by Who like guitars and pounding drums. Then there's the notstalgic Victory Dance with it's mod scene theme that all aging mods can relate to. Other standout tracks include Shakedown the Breakdown, Station 8, and Victory Dance. Another week, another great modcast coming your way. I'm, kicking off the show with an American 60s band that sounds almost more mod than the British mods of their day. The band is Powder and I included them this week in part because this coming Saturday I'm going to get to meet them when they play at the Studio 66 mod night at the LoFi Performance Gallery here in Seattle, and lucky me I'm going to be the guest DJ. Another thing that is making this week's show especially good is that I'm joined by my old friend Dean Hoth who is the singer and bass player for power pop band The Eddies. Additionally Dean has been a behind the scenes mover and shaker in producing some great tribute albums, and is also working on releasing unheard live materials of older mod bands from the 80s to the 90s to the 21st century. What can I say about the Small Faces that hasn't already been said? Not much honestly. I'm not a Small Faces junky.  But I do love their music. In fact, in my earliest mod days I think I preferred them to The Who. It's been said that The Who was a band that became mods, but the Small Faces were mods who became a band. I was looking for some covers of Small Faces songs when I realized how few there really are out there. Compared to the hundreds of covers of The Who, The Kinks, The Stones and other British invasion acts of the 60s, I was shocked at just how few people have covered their songs over the years. And amongst those, fewer still ones that are really any good. I've gathered here a double handful that I think fit the bill and do the group justice. Good luck trying to get a definitive answer to what mod jazz is. It's like the famous comment by US Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart when asked to define what obscenity is: "I know it when I see it."
