Gangs of Lagos - Nigeria's fist official Amazon Prime movie has started so many conversations, a key one is on the Eyo masquerades in Lagos. In the movie Eyo were referred to as the first gang in Lagos and were depicted with guns, which some Eyo members took offense to.

Last week on 'Lai of The Land we heard from David Folaranmi, who shared part of his story on dealing with crack cocaine addiction, well this week we are continuing with David's story as it's far from over. If you haven't listened to the first part of this recording please listen before continuing with this episode. 

Part 1 ended with David in the hospital after a serious accident that broke his leg. A continuous theme so far in David's story is that he couldn't respond positively to several wake-up calls.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes 2021 world drug report states that about 225 million people globally use drugs in the year leading up to the report and 36 million people suffered from drug use disorders. Furthermore, a 2018 report by the UNODC reveal that there were about 14.3 million drug users in Nigeria at the time and close to 3 million people suffer from a drug use disorder. 

It isn't new news that drug abuse is prevalent in Nigeria affecting many people all across the country, we've seen several reports and documentaries that have covered this especially in recent years but what is it like to go through a drug addiction and survive it? 

Our guest on the podcast today is David Folaranmi, he suffered from a crack Cocaine addiction for many years and his story is chilling to say the least.

What is a digital nomad? Well, our best friend Google defines a digital nomad as a person who earns a living through working online in various locations of their choosing, rather than a fixed business location. I would say that pretty much sums up my guest on the podcast today.

There are large disparities on how many Nigerians live in the diaspora, according to a PWC report, official figures from 2017 state that 1.24 million Nigerians live in the diaspora, a figure that is believed to be far higher now but some figures state that as many as 5- 15million Nigerians live abroad. Whatever the figure is now, many Nigerians live in the diaspora and day by day more people contribute to the "Japa" wave - This is essentially a wave of Nigerians leaving the country for better lives abroad but it doesn't always work out as planned and some people have found themselves back at home like Lordson, my guest on the podcast.

Storytelling is an art and in my opinion, no one does it better than Korty. I met Korty several years ago, we both grew up in Ibadan and she's one of my closest friends, family really... there was always something hidden in her and I knew it would come to the surface one day. Her talent of storytelling is in a league of its own and her rapid success speaks for that. 

One thins about storytelling is it can take a huge toll on you, you consume so much information, so many experiences and sometimes you just need to breathe.

Africa has always had its own religions and practices, majority of people on the continent today are either Christians or Muslims though, but traditional religion live on through a small percentage of the population.

There are many misconceptions about traditional religions that I personally often find unfair because what if Christianity and Islam never became so widely practiced in Africa? Would you still see this religions that our ancestors practiced for generations as a problem?

My relationship with Lagos - The city that I live in is definitely a Love/hate one, with over 20million people living here in Nigeria’s commercial hub, there is so much going on at every second of the day, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Coming to Lagos when you don’t live in the city can be a lot to take in and if you are not street smart and you’re hitting the street, well good luck to you.

My guest on the podcast today is a young man called Ayomiku, a student at the University of Ilorin in Kware stat. He visited Lagos for a photo shoot and let’s just say evil forces overtook it.

According to the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, there are about 303,000 maternal death every year, this equates to about 830 deaths a day. Pregnancy and childbirth are two moments in many women live that everyone experiences differently. You can talk to some women about childbirth and it literally makes you never want to have a kid and you may talk to others who makes it seem like a walk in the park. But, if there's one common understanding, it's that this nine month process is no joke at all.

In this episode, I'm joined by two women - Sola and Betty, they've both been there and done that and now they're sharing their experiences.

Some people live in a totally different gear from the rest of us, they have this drive and a routine that they don't play with, how I wish that was me, drive I have but routine - that I don't always stick to. 

But one persons lifestyle that has been growing on me is my brother. Kaz gets up at 5am everyday then goes on a 10km walk or run depending on his mood, he dedicates a specific number of hour to reading and he's extremely passionate about personal development. 

So Kaz is here this week to, hopefully give us a dose of motivation that you need.

LGBTQI rights are limited in Nigeria and in 2014 former president Goodluck Jonathan signed a bill into Law that Criminalizes same sex relationships and LGBT advocacy with a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment. According to NGO - Human Dignity Trust, there's substantial evidence of the law being enforced in recent years with number of the LGBT community frequently subject to arrest and violence.

Have you ever thought about the experiences of people who migrate out of the country? The ones who don’t have money or passports but are still trying to escape for the promise of a better life?

According to the International Organization for Migration, In 2022 6,042 returnees were reintegrated into life back at home. Many returnees who try to cross several countries to Europe have found themselves stuck in Libya - where have been several reports of human rights abuses. They often work low paying jobs if they get paid at all, alongside various inhumane treatments while they as try to find a way to Europe or back home. 

Jennifer and Joseph are a couple who left Nigeria for Italy but their Journey went far from as planned.
