Nick Kleban on becoming a pro cyclist, going from gravel to road racing, the joy of competition, proper fueling, racing strategies, finding enjoyment in running, different types of gear and accessibility to the sport
Today's guest has already been on the show to help us with a nutrition series we did earlier this year, however I thought it would be nice to have him back on to share his story. On this episode of Just In Stride, I had a great conversation with Elite Cyclist, Nick Kleban. He's been cycling almost since he could walk, early on in the mountain trails and later on the open roads. It wasn't always smooth sailing but ultimately he's found himself back in the saddle and loves to compete with his team year after year. Nick loves to geek out on gear, nutrition and race day strategy which always makes for a very interesting chat. He shares his knowledge, wisdom and enthusiasm for his sport with us, so sit back and enjoy the ride. ------- Offer from Xact Nutrition [https://www.xactnutrition.com/]: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Rob Watson on his love of running and pursuit of the Olympic dream, life after running, finding other ways to test himself physically, love of cycling and triathlon, coaching other on how to achieve their goals
I always find it fascinating how our passion can take on many forms and mean different things to us throughout our lives. I also believe you need to do things you want to do while you're healthy and while you can because the opportunity to do so may not always be there. So get out there and do what you love for as long as you can. On this episode of Just In Stride I shared a great conversation with former pro marathon and now coach, Rob Watson. Simply put, Rob was a pure talent and wanted to run fast. He ran in school and after, in pursuit of his Olympic dream. He never actually made an Olympic team but it certainly wasn't for a lack of trying. He ran huge mileage and went all in on his training, traveling to compete in order to make strides in his sport. He's won 4 national titles and qualified for a bunch of international competitions, including 2 world championships. Today he enjoys sharing his expertise and knowledge with others through coaching, in order to help athletes achieve their own goals. Arianne Raby on going from elite marathoner to triathlete, running fast, shifts and priorities through life, becoming a mom, finding balance between parenting, athlete and career, rejuvenating her love for endurance sports
It's funny how life changes and with that so do our priorities. What was important to you 5 or 10 years ago may have little to no significance to you today. In a lot of ways, that's what can make life exciting. Trying new things, exploring new spaces and learning new skills can be so rewarding. On this episode of Just In Stride I moved through the journey of elite distance runner and now triathlete, Arianne Raby. Arianne was born to run. She ran in soccer, then in school and even earned a scholarship to continue running. We spoke about the success she had once she finished school, battling through a knee injury and even how she balances training being a new mom. But what was even more interesting was how triathlon has brought out the excitement for endurance sports in Arianne again, something she had lost after a lifetime of running. Fuel for Thought Series: Gut Training and Race Day Execution with Nick Kleban
You may be asking yourself why this episode is titled "Fuel for Thought". Any guesses? I mean if you know me, you know I love a good old play on words, hence the name of this new series that I've produced with Xact Nutrition. Athletes train for hours, work with coaches on technique, join workout groups and sign up for big challenges but one of the things we feel could be overlooked by athletes that is so critical, is education regarding nutrition and how it helps you perform. So we've put together a multi episode series to discuss specific topics pertaining to just that, in hopes that you come away with more in depth knowledge and a better understanding of nutrition. On this episode of Just In Stride, Fuel for Thought Edition, we learn how to train our gut and execute our fueling plan on race day with Nick Kleban. We go in depth on what it actually means to train your gut and how athletes can go about doing that effectively so they're ready on the day of their event. Fueling is as important as the physical training itself no matter what endurance sport you choose. You can train as well as you want but if you want to optimize your performance on race day, you have to go with your gut. ------- Offer from Xact Nutrition [https://www.xactnutrition.com/]: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Yoshi Groen on everything that is Euro Trip, Growing up in a running family, Run Community, Running Junkies, race organizing for the community
Last month I finally got to take part in an endurance event that had been on my bucket list for years. A relay race across Europe, from Strasbourg to Innsbruck, covering 420km as a relay team of six. The event was called Eurotrip and it certainly did not disappoint. Of course the highlights you see would be the smiles, beautiful scenery and happiness along the way but let me tell you, it was much harder than it looked. Facing the elements, extreme fatigue, logistics and challenging terrain for such a distance can be demoralizing at times however it's the resilience of a group of individuals that makes it all come together, creating lasting memories for a lifetime. On this episode of Just In Stride we unpack what was The Eurotrip with the event creator himself, Yoshi Groen. He's a great runner in his own right but he just loves putting on these exciting ultra events for the run community and it attracts runners from across the globe. We spoke about how the idea for the Eurotrip came about, the challenges his team faces behind the scenes and the motivations around why he dedicates his time to putting it all together. In the process we get to know Yoshi on a more personal level and I'm excited to share his running journey with you all. ------- Offer from Xact Nutrition [https://www.xactnutrition.com/]: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Moritz Keinath on his pursuit of the marathon, making big strides, building a community, running to move through rehab, achieving 6 stars, analysis to improve
When I first got into the endurance world I was mainly focused on the training aspect but as I've learned and grown over the years, I've discovered that there is way more to it than that. Nutrition, rest, strength and sleep all play a major role in how we improve as athletes. If you're interested in taking the next step, ask yourself which of these other aspects do you know little to nothing about and take some time to learn more, you might be surprised how much of an impact it can have on how you perform. On this episode of Just In Stride I broke down the success of Elite Swiss Marathoner and coach, Moritz Keinath. Moritz played hockey and football growing up but actually didn't enjoy running at all. It was only after a knee injury that he decided to give running another shot so he could get movement back in his life. Today running has become much more for Moritz. It was a way to connect with his parents who were also passionate about the sport, a way for him to push his own limits and it also brought him closer to his local running community. He's made huge strides in the marathon, now running at a semi professional level and hopes to better his time at the Berlin marathon later this year. Fuel for Thought Series: Debunking Nutrition Myths with Alister Gardner
On this episode of Just In Stride, Fuel for Thought edition, we'll debunk various nutrition myths, with Elite road and trail runner, Alister Gardner. When it comes to nutrition and best practices, everyone has an opinion. Whether it's using salt tabs, choosing between real food vs gels or bars, identifying an ideal race weight, fasting during workouts or using supplements, we'll provide detailed explanations and discuss the importance of each one. So no matter if you're an elite or just starting out, you'll certainly gain something from this conversation and that's no myth. Here are some of the key questions we cover: -Does taking salt tablets prevent/stop cramping? -Is supplementing with maltodextrin beneficial for endurance athletes? -Is it better to fast or fuel before training? -Does carb loading enhance race day performance? -The lighter you are, the faster you'll race. -Real food is better than gels/bars ------- Offer from Xact Nutrition [https://www.xactnutrition.com/]: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Jen Segger on her adventure race around Croatia, 20 years of experience, Exploration, Discovery, Family, Coaching, Multiday races and the risk/rewards that go with it.
In endurance sports success doesn't come quickly. It's preparation over many days, weeks, months and years that usually yield the most success. It's consistency over time that allows the body to move, adapt and recover that will provide us with longevity in the sport. Endurance sports is a lifestyle for many, so being able to do it through all stages of life often becomes the big picture goal. On this episode of Just In Stride we dive into the unknown with endurance athlete, adventure racer and ultra coach, Jen Segger. 20 years ago Jen set out to be the best adventure racer she could, as she trained while exploring the beautiful province of British Columbia. Over that time she's completed numerous ultra trail events, multi-day expeditions and team adventure races too, almost always finishing on the podium or close to it. Today, she still competes with more passion than ever, as she continues to challenge herself and her athletes, as they reach for new heights. ------- Offer from Xact Nutrition [https://www.xactnutrition.com/]: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Melanie Henderson about her intro to triathlon and finishing on podium, being a top age grouper, long distance triathlon, Ironman World Championships, Kona, Airline Pilot athlete balance, living away from home
As we move through life, we go through many different phases and priorities certainly change. Over time we grow and our appreciation for what's important in life takes on different forms. That goes for family, friendships, careers and certainly our athletic goals too. On this episode of Just In Stride we get to know Elite distance triathlete and top age grouper, Melanie Henderson. Melanie started out as a track and field kid in her youth, always having fun with a healthy dose of competitiveness. She then moved from South Africa to the U.S in order to pursue a career as a pilot and that's where a triathlete was born. She proved to be a natural in her very first Ironman 70.3, placing 3rd in her age group and earning a stop at the World Championships. From that moment on, she was hooked. We unpack her early success in the sport, the lessons she's learnt along the way, the sense of community she feels and the pilot athlete balance she's trying to find, so she'll be able to fly in all aspects of her life. ------- Offer from Xact Nutrition [https://www.xactnutrition.com/]: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Just In Stride
Faye Alice on her pursuit of ultra distances, the race across Scotland, multi day events, Exploring nature, build a life in Canada, time management, proper fueling for ultras and building self confidence
My thoughts for today are around the idea that we should never take our good health for granted and I'll tell you why. I recently had an accident that took me out of running or any sport for that matter for about a week and a half. It happened right outside my house on my bike going super slow, barely pedaling. There was a curb that my front tire cleared but my back tire did not and next thing I knew I was laying head first on the ground with blood dripping from my forehead. Stitches were required and I somehow had major bruising in my lower abdominal. It wasn't fun and I couldn't run. I was mad at myself for letting it happen, for not being more careful but of course it could always be much worse. I've slowly come back to running and so grateful to feel good doing it again. So be safe out there and cherish whatever form of movement you're able to do today, wherever you're at in the process. On today's episode of Just In Stride I sat down with Ultrarunner and adventurer, Faye Alice. Faye grew up being active and ran for her school. Dance however was what she wanted to pursue as a career until she realized she may have reached her potential and decided to move on. Where dancing stopped, her running continued, finding joy on the roads and later on the trails. Over the years her passion has grown but also the distances as she takes on multi day races of 200 miles and beyond. Of course, with the Canadian Rockies as her training ground there's endless opportunities to explore for hours on her own two feet. ------- Offer from Xact Nutrition [https://www.xactnutrition.com/]: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Remi Leroux on sub-ultra mountain running, his love of tennis, progression in the sport, racing shorter but faster, training methods, running lifestyle, opportunity to travel, the pursuit of excellence, finding our limits
When I first started running 14 years ago and signed up for races, I fell into the trap of wanting to jump into the next distance too quickly. A 10K turned into a half marathon which then led me to a marathon shortly after. I didn't know much about the sport back then but if I had to go back I would stick with one distance for a while longer until I was comfortable to move up. Recently I've been racing some shorter stuff and I have to say I'm loving it. Preparing with less mileage, running fast, racing strategically and recovering quicker too. So if your goal is a marathon or ultra this year, find a fast 5 or 10K to get you out of your comfort zone, you might surprise yourself. On this episode of Just In Stride I hit the trails with Elite sub-ultra marathoner, Remi Leroux. In his youth he loved playing tennis and excelled at it. Despite his success he decided to give it up due to the lack of resources he felt he needed to remain competitive. In fact, that's what drew him to running so much. The idea that he could run anytime, anywhere, without training partners and really be in control of his results, made distance running very attractive. Remi progressed quite rapidly, signing up for a 5K and quickly jumped up to longer distances, leading him to the Ultra trails. After years of ultra marathons, he realized he'd much rather race fast and challenge himself on the shorter mountain tracks. That transition has led him to some impressive results, racing 30 times in the last 2 seasons and finishing on 9 podiums in 2023 alone. Proof that running the distances you're passionate and training for specific goals could be the key to your own success. ------- Offer from Xact Nutrition [https://www.xactnutrition.com/]: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Jazmine Lowther on her rise in Ultra Trail Running, overcoming injury, confidence, running form, life choices and understanding what motivates us.
I love thinking about the idea that just because your life has been a certain way until this point, doesn't mean you can't change your own trajectory. Who you were 10, 5 or even last year is not the same person you are today. We live, we learn and we grow. Take the time to acknowledge the challenges and accomplishments in your life, and celebrate how far you've gotten. On this episode of Just In Stride I had a pleasant chat with Elite Ultra Trail Runner and Nutrition Coach, Jazmine Lowther. She had an active and competitive childhood but fell out of sports and into other interests that put her future in danger. Fortunately for her, she realized her own potential before it was too late. Today her focus is much different, becoming a pro ultra trail runner and going all in. Her breakout year was in 2022, winning the 100K as the underdog at Canyons, earning a Golden Ticket to Western States and finishing 4th in the CCC at UTMB in Chamonix. Unfortunately after that, injuries got in her way of realizing some of those dreams but she's shown resilience, battled back and is ready to compete this upcoming season. ------- Offer from Xact Nutrition [https://www.xactnutrition.com/]: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE.
