Hey Poor Podcast Episode 123: The Hey Poor Player PAX East Experience
It’s like a series of System Shock-esque audio logs from PAX.

This isn’t your usual Hey Poor Podcast. This week, we sent occasional investigative reporter and Hey Poor Podcast regular Jay Petrequin to the PAX East show floor, where he spent four days playing games until he wanted to die. His only communication with the outside world (besides, like, Twitter and Facebook and Skype and his phone and stuff) was a series of fascinating audio logs, which we have edited together into a podcast-like configuration suitable for your ears and home. Here you’ll find discussions of every game that mattered, interviews with the developers of some of the most exciting upcoming indie titles, tales of Shake Shack, and more!
(This episode also features Derek McCurry, Ron White, Tim LaMarque and Jesse Ure.)

Talking Points: MOTHERGUNSHIP, Project Warlock, Sinner: Sacrifice For Redemption, Final Fantasy Trading Card Game, Soul Calibur 6, Code Vein, Light Fall, City of the Shroud, Swords of Ditto, Death Garden, Trailblazers, Dead Cells, Sky Noon, Space Junkies, Ultra Space Battle Brawl, Brawlhalla, Just Shapes & Beats, Final Fantasy XIV, the Power Glove concert
As well as interviews with the creators of: Sky Noon, Guacamelee! 2, Sinner: Sacrifice For Redemption, Swords of Ditto,
And another interview with: Eric Knox, AKA eSeamus

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 122: Sy Snootles Settles It In Smash
“It Ain’t The Sharpest Cast In The Pod”

This week’s Hey Poor Podcast sees the old crew of I “Steamed Hams Inc.” Coleman, Jay “Sister Confession” Petrequin, and Nathaniel “Nico Naked Nathan” Terencio reunited for the first time in 2018. And not a moment too soon, either – from Battlefront II to Shadow of the Colossus to the never-ending parade of cool Switch ports, there’s lots of games to talk about. Plus: I Coleman can’t find anything bad to say about They Are Billions, Nathan rates the attractiveness of every single Smash Bros. character (#1 may surprise you), Jay tries to analyze the fall of the Marvel Netflix shows, and the POTUS made a half-assed attempt at regulating videogame violence. Oh, and there’s an extended discussion of awful Star Wars side character Sy Snootles, pictured above. We’re sorry, but not that sorry.
(This video features additional music by NPCarlsson.)
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Monster Hunter World, Shadow of the Colossus, The Flame And The Flood Switch port, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Marvel’s The Punisher, Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season Two, The Tick Season 1B, Warhammer Vermintide 2, They Are Billions
Audience Questions: Super Smash Bros. romance tier lists, Solid Snake versus Link meat battle, I’s Sophie’s Choice, Trump’s meeting with videogame devs, favorite ethnic food that’s not your ethnicity
The News: Battlefront II swaps awful loot boxes for only-marginally-less-awful regular microtransactions, the March Nintendo Direct, a lot of Smash Bros. speculation

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 121: Black Panther, Though
“Some people are a waste of perfectly good carbon.”

This week on the Hey Poor Podcast, I “Incredibly Sick” Coleman tries unsuccessfully to hide the fact that he’s sick, Nathan “No Ding Dong Talk” Terencio misses the good ol’ days of tag team fighting games, and Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is perhaps the most disappointing HD remake of all time. Oh, also: the ESRB made it clear that it has no interest in dealing with the loot box gambling issue, and President Game Show Host thinks mass shootings are caused by unregulated access to videogames. Oh well. At least Black Panther was awesome.
(Note: there’s no way we could discuss the major news of the last week without getting political, so skip the news section if that’s an issue for you. As always, views expressed on the Hey Poor Podcast reflect only the views of those who express them and are not representative of Hey Poor Player as an organization. That goes double for anything Nathan says about Tony the Tiger.)
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Black Panther [SPOILERS FROM 7:00 TO 37:58], Dragon Ball FighterZ, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition
Audience Questions: most anticipated games, brussels sprouts
The News: the ESRB responds to loot boxes with a big pile of nothing, the President of the United States plans to go after violent videogames

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 120: The 25 Best Games Of 2017
The games that made us happy in a year full of sad

On this week’s episode of the Hey Poor Podcast, we assemble an all-star cast of Hey Poor Player contributors to count down our official ranking of the 25 best games of the year. Host I “RUINER” Coleman is joined by Jay “Pyre” Petrequin, Nathaniel “Rakuen” Terencio, Jonathan “Uncharted: Lost Legacy” Trussler, and Dougie “Dream Daddy” Powell to discuss the games that made us laugh, the games that made us cry, the games that did something truly unique, and the tried-and-true games that just did what they did with style and excellence.
Strap in, folks, because we’ve got two and a half hours of lively discussion. We’ve got a diverse list of games and plenty of entries you might not expect – in fact, we’ve even got more than a few entries that we don’t all agree on! Along the way, we’ll talk about why those games deserve their place on this list, why a game’s business model and update structure can be at least as important as its content, which games spoke to each contributor the most and why, and how (at least according to the scumbaggiest parts of our comments section) this was a particularly good year for the Jewish Conspiracy which, as we all know, marches on.
Just want the games? Look elsewhere on the site for a condensed list with shorter blurbs written by every member of the site. You can see the list by clicking here! Have a Happy New Year, and be sure to milk…that thing that we ask you to milk. You know the one.

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 119: Rudolph’s Cornucopia Of Madness
“I love that heartwarming family special about ripping all the teeth straight out of a dude’s head.”

This week on the Hey Poor Podcast, we talk about Last Jedi spoilers. Seriously. This is not a joke or a bit – we spoil the whole dang movie. Still, that’s no reason not to curl up by the fire with a glass of nog or nog substitute and listen to I “Snow Miser” Coleman and Jay “Heat Miser” Petrequin discuss why Star Wars‘ eighth episode is easily one of the best movies of the year, extol the merits of DOOM‘s Switch port (now that Bethesda’s bothered to fix some of the more glaring issues), catch up on some of the year’s best games, movies, books, and music; and review Bridge Constructor Portal which, to the surprise of no one who was actually paying attention, did not turn out to be a stealth reveal for Half Life 3. Yeah. People really thought that. All this and more, on the Hey Poor Podcast!
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Star Wars: EPISODE VIII – The Last Jedi [SPOILERS FOR THE LAST JEDI FROM 11:11 TO 38:00], Jay’s final thoughts on Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon 2’s new maps, catching up on Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn, the Monster Hunter World beta, the DOOM Switch port, Pyre, Bridge Constructor Portal

The News: PUBG is broken, future of the Xbone

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 118: My Dinner With Pikachu
“This is why we fight, Charmander. It’s not so that we can win. It’s so that, for however brief a moment, we can inflict pain on a world that will not let us end.”

On this week’s episode of the Hey Poor Podcast, an innocent discussion about Pikachu’s new found ability to speak English in Pokemon The Movie: I Choose You becomes a tale of nihilism, despair, and the fruitless belief that something good is coming. Because videogames! Join I “Detective Pikachu (English Dub)” Coleman, Nathan “Gigafarts” Terencio, and Jay “Archie Peglio” Petrequin as we dunk on Justice League, try and fail to get Neir: Automata’s garbage PC port to work, wish that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon could be more fun than they are, and discuss the endless bitter saga of EA being terrible. All this and more, on the only podcast that features Pikachu asking of a cruel God: “Where is my blast? From whence comes my off again?”
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Justice League, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Steven Universe: Save The Light, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Ayo: A Rain Tale, Final Fantasy XV Multiplayer DLC, Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You!, Rage Quest, Nier: Automata’s broken-ass PC port, Fallout: New Vegas

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 117: J. Jonah Jameson’s Tumblr
“PARKER! Reblog pictures of the SPOIDAHMAN!”

On this week’s episode of the Hey Poor Podcast, I “My Life Was A Mistake” Coleman is joined by Jay “Behold The Juice” Petrequin for an episode that gets into everything from the real-life implications of gamer-focused political campaigns to how Telltale’s Batman game managed to cause an international incident with Russia. No, seriously. It’s been a crazy week, but we still have time to talk about what makes Mario Odyssey so great, the hilariously bad DOOM portable port, the future of the Nintendo Switch, and how Thor Ragnarok‘s  Jack-Kirby-inspired comic book stylings might have made it the best Marvel film of all time. All this and more, only on the Hey Poor Podcast!
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Mario Odyssey, Rayman Legends Switch port, Life is Strange: Before The Storm Episode 2, Superbeat Xonic Switch port, DOOM for Switch is garbage, Nier “Automataomata”, Binding of Isaac Switch port, Thor Ragnarok (minor spoilers from 1:00:13 to 1:05:25)
Audience Questions: good creators, what Brianna Wu’s political campaign means for games, favorite hot drinks
The News: the buck-wild saga of how the Telltale Batman game caused an international incident, the SAG-AFTRA strike ends, L.A. Noire and DOOM Switch ports are way, way too large

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 116: Donkey Kong’s Fingers
“That was the Dark Souls of agreements, right there.”

On this week’s Hey Poor Podcast, what the hell is a videogame? It’s all movie talk here, as I “Holder Of The Cursed Microphone” Coleman and Jay “Absolutely Into Vore” Petrequin discuss how Blade Runner 2049 may not be pretentious enough, why The LEGO Ninjago Movie is uncomfortably mediocre, and the bizarre fact that the Detective Pikachu movie is a thing that exists in the real world. Also: I’s still obsessed with Sonic Mania, Jay bought a whole new 3DS to play Metroid: Samus Returns, Hiveswap is pretty much exactly what you think it is, and IGN is probably up to some shady shit. Yes, again. All this and more, on the Hey Poor Podcast!
Information about helping the citizens of Puerto Rico can be found here.
Games/Films/Etc of the week: A Hat In Time, Jay’s thoughts on Destiny 2, Metroid: Samus Returns, Hiveswap, The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Blade Runner 2049, Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 115: Balloon Fight Is Now The Only Game
“It’s the story of a Nokia cell phone, but she’s a little girl with big breasts.”

This week on the Hey Poor Podcast: bad news, guys! No longer content merely with shoving it down our throats every time they re-release any of their “classic” games, Nintendo has now declared that Balloon Fight for the NES is now the only game that will ever be released on anything, ever. Despite this chilling news, I “I Thought I Was Hot Shit” Coleman, Nathan “Looks 8 But Is 100 Years Old” Terencio, and Anthony “Bootleg Mickey Mouse ” Spivey manage to squeeze two hours of podcast out of discussions of games that no longer exist. I got a Switch and still isn’t impressed, Nathan thinks you should play Pokken and skip Marvel VS Capcom Infinite, Spivey can’t stop talking about his love for Neo Yokio, and RUINER – to our surprise – might just be the best game of the year. Plus: Hooters is now canon in the Sonic universe (that’s not a joke), Goku gets into a fight with The Tick, and the developers of PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS have lost their goddamn minds. All this and more, on the Hey Poor Podcast!

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 114: Prepare, Character Zero!
“Oh, great! A Legendary Shader of Ugly!”

This week on the Hey Poor Podcast, we decide we’re through with creating quality content and decide to pitch a terrible self-insert nerd fanfiction to Steven Spielberg. Because after all, it worked for Ready Player One. Join overweight nerd protagonist I “Your ASMR” Coleman and samurai pizza deliveryman Nathan “An Average Kid Who No One Understands” Terencio as we discuss the amazingly, hilariously terrible PC port of Sonic Mania, the startling similarities between Destiny 2 and Killing Floor 2, the greatest match in competitive Super Smash Bros history, and the thrilling conclusion to Mario/Rabbids RPG Watch. Plus: a surprising amount of serious discussion about representation and racism in media, or as the cool kids are calling it, “SJW Bullshit.” All this and more, on “Prepare, Character Zero!”
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Destiny 2, Killing Floor 2, Brigsby Bear
Audience Questions: current music obsession, favorite fruit, best/worst “games industry” experiences
The News: the South Park game did something tasteless again, LA Noire is making a semi-triumphant pseudo-return, Sonic Mania’s PC port is astonishingly awful

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 113: Investigative Nude Mod Journalism
“Wow, Nathan’s not even here and he’s ruining the podcast.”

This week, the Hey Poor Podcast forgets that videogames exist and turns into a streaming TV review show. Again. Join I “I Could Go For A Ko-Taco” Coleman and forgotten fan favorite Anthony “That Clip Of Those Wrestlers Yelling ‘He’s Fat’” Spivey as they discuss the good, bad, and ugly of trans-media adaptations, from Amazon’s excellent new Tick series to Netflix’s accursed Death Note film. We do manage to sneak in some videogame talk, though – including why Sonic Mania might be the best 2D Sonic game, how Half Life 3’s story got leaked and what makes it so terrible, the terrifying implications of Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle’s “unexpected story content,” and some actual on-air investigative journalism regarding the history of Final Fantasy nude mods. All this and more, on the Hey Poor Podcast!
Games/Films/Etc of the week: My Little Sister Can’t Possibly Have A Hemorrhoid?!, Sonic Mania, Death Note (2017), Disgaea IV, The Tick (2017)
Audience Questions: worst media adaptations, best media adaptations, cake VS pie, why people can’t seem to shut up about Dark Souls

“Bubsy’s business card doesn’t fit in a rolodex! Bubsy’s business card doesn’t BELONG in a rolodex!”

It’s been a lousy week for the games industry, folks, which means it’s been a great week for the Hey Poor Podcast. Join I “I’m Gonna Change The Intro/Outro Music To Wonderwall, See If I Don’t” Coleman, Jay “uggggggggggggggghhhh” Petrequin, and Nathan “Rose Of Ver-salads” Terencio as we discuss the good (the season finale of Freemaker Adventures), the meh (Lawbreakers), and the bad (Nintendo’s being awful, Microsoft’s being awful, Bioware’s being awful, and Bethesda’s being extra super MEGA awful.) Hey Poor Podcast
Hey Poor Podcast Episode 111: Shove The Crackers Down His Throat
“We gotta get out of the bit!”

Guys, we know it’s two hours long, but you gotta understand – this week’s Hey Poor Podcast is almost certainly the best we’ve ever done. I “Subject X” Coleman and Jay “Suck Weed” Petrequin may have a reputation for arguing with each other about everything under the sun, but in this episode they join forces for a much more noble goal: arguing with the entire rest of the games industry about everything under the sun. We take on lazy games writers and the lazy writing techniques that sustain them, hateful gamers and their love of hate, and – of course – the ever-revolting antics of “Scum Companies, or Scumpanies.” It’s not all negative, though – we’ve got lots of good things to say about Pyre, Gigantic, and an upcoming game about secret cats, and along the way we also finally provide a few of the musical moments that people are always asking us for and introduce a new character who’s sure to become a fan favorite. All this and much, much more – only on the Hey Poor Podcast!
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Splatoon 2, Pyre, Lawbreakers, Jay’s thoughts on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Atomic Blonde, Dunkirk, Gigantic, StarCraft: Remastered
Audience Questions: Favorite game settings, favorite videogame protagonists, pet peeves, Nutella love/hate
The News: the Deadly Premonition designer announces his new game about secret cats, Shadow of War has the worst loot box system of any game ever, EA says FIFA 18’s sales will determine whether or not they support the Switch

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 110: Gross Fat Hook Boy
“That’s not a druid. That’s just every homeless guy in San Francisco.”

On this week’s episode of the Hey Poor Podcast, it’s up to I “Chocolate Torte And Apple Cider” Coleman and Nathan “Green Tea And Lumpia” Terencio to hold down the fort – the Fort Nite, tha is! We compare and contrast the business models of Epic’s new “it should be free” $40 build-em-up with Motiga’s adorable development hell MOBA Gigantic, discuss how Paco The Demon Frog has found his way into yet another game, complain about why The Dark Tower isn’t a better movie than it is, and even somehow have a conversation about DC’s Infinite Crisis, a game that nobody played or remembers. Plus big announcements, comfort food, a frank and slightly painful discussion about the allegations surrounding Polygon’s Nick Robinson, and more of that F*ck Valve content you crave. All this and more, on the Hey Poor Podcast!
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Crash Day, Gigantic, Mobile Heroes, The Dark Tower, Fortnite, Rick & Morty Season 3
Audience Questions: Biggest wastes of time, comfort food questions

Hey Poor Podcast Episode 109: Excelsior, Senpai
“Konichiwa, True Believers! We’ve got a kawaii caper for you this evening, in the classic Marvel style!”

We’re not gonna lie to you, folks: thanks to some Jay-shaped technical difficulties, we actually recorded this episode of the Hey Poor Podcast two weeks ago and are just getting it up now. Whoops. Hopefully Comic-Con is still relevant in this, the dark future of August 2017.
To make up for it, it’s an extra-long, extra-chunky episode featuring appearances from all your favorite HPPeople: I “I’m Too Sick For Jokes” Coleman, Nathan “Credit Card Out” Terencio, Jay “I Know We’ve Gone Long On This Already BUT…” Petrequin, and Anthony “I Forgot What Narnia Was For A Second” Spivey. We’ll continue the ongoing Centaur VS Dead Centaur debate, ink ourselves talking about Splatoon 2, and explain why everyone else is wrong and you should go watch Valerian. Plus: everyone but I is still wrong about Ant-Man, Jay and Anthony think 2017 might be the best year for games ever, Nate gives us the rundown on how the Yu-Gi-Oh card game is trying to unf*ck itself, and somebody does an incredible impersonation of Stan Lee that everyone else just kinda sleeps on. All this and more, on the Hey Poor Podcast!
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Splatoon 2, Stan Lee’s The Reflection, A Centaur’s Life, Iron Tides, Yu-Gi-Oh! (the card game), Aven Colony, Antihero, DOOM 2016 Update 6.66, Solstice Chronicles: MIA, Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets

Hey Poor Podcast
Hey Poor Podcast Episode 108: The Hunchback Of Notre Game
“THRILL as the hosts of the Hey Poor Podcast just take a friggin’ nap.”

Well, folks, it’s official – the games industry has hit the summer slump, and that means an episode of the Hey Poor Podcast which, generously, talks about videogames for a whole 30 minutes of its 2-hour runtime. Join I “Mademoiselle Doume” Coleman, Anthony “Racist Against Centaurs” Spivey, and Nathan “Fever Dream” Terencio, all of whom got somewhere between 0 and 3 solid hours of sleep before the show starts. This means that relatively sane conversations about KantCon 2017, Kingdom Hearts’ increasingly nonsensical existence, the new anime season, and the flaws of Spider-Man: Homecoming have to share space with an argument about Coke or “Pepps,” the Great Centaur Debate, and the sound of three very confused grown men trying to understand who in the hell Minecraft: Story Mode is for, exactly. Plus: I applies his brand of extremely pretentious game criticism to the “soda or pop” debate, Nathan insists his latest anime crush is completely non-sexual, and Anthony quite frankly carries the whole show. Hey Poor Podcast
Hey Poor Podcast Episode 107: My Vending Machine Sister CAN’T Be This Cute!
“This Is I Coleman’s Last Day Of Being Alive”

Jay’s not here for this week’s episode of the Hey Poor Podcast, and you know what that means: unchecked anime bullshit. Join I “Mister Tumnus Could Probably Get It” Coleman, Nathan “All Vending Machines Are Queens” Terencio, and Anthony “Japan Is Dumb” Spivey as we discuss how the Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy is definitely exactly like Dark Souls, why Reigns is probably the best mobile game of the year, the dark videogames-as-anime-girls-based timeline proposed by Superdimension Neptune, and how Battlefront II is trying to get away with being just as greedy as Battlefront 2015 (maybe.) Plus: games we’d like to see more of, Baby Driver is the best film of the year, Nathan pursues a lucrative career in catgirl voice acting, and I enchants us all with their “beautiful” singing voice. All this and more, on America’s #1 Hey Poor Podcast!
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy, Little Witch Academia, Summer Games Done Quick, Superdimension Neptune VS Sega Hard Girls, Reigns, Baby Driver
Audience Questions: What’s a type of game you’d like to see more of, hamburgers or hotdogs
The News: The Division includes microtransactions after promising not to include microtransactions, Battlefront II goes pay-to-win, OpenIV is allowed to resume, Anime Expo 2017 recap

Hey Poor Podcast
Hey Poor Podcast Episode 106: A Miserable Little Pile Of Secrets
“It’s like a really bad Zack Snyder film. AKA any Zack Snyder film.”

On this week’s episode of the Hey Poor Podcast, Nathan “Some Garbage Is Okay” Terencio returns for a surprisingly low-key and forthright chat with I “I Would Leave My Girlfriend For Doom” Coleman. We discuss everything from the mediocre games we had to review this week to the untimely death of Dawn of War III to Sony’s continued insistence on being a piece of shit to its customers. Plus: I gushes about Wonder Woman even though everyone’s already see it, Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour is the best shooter of the year, and we have a much, much too long conversation about videogame-based porn parodies. All this and more, on the Hey Poor Podcast!
Games/Films/Etc of the week: God Wars: Future Past, MXM, Hyper Universe, A Centaur’s Life, The Golf Club 2, the Dawn of War III Annihilation update, Wonder Woman, Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour
Audience Questions: Favorite game quote, the return of food questions, stop asking us about VR, Nathan’s porn recommendations
The News: the saga of the SNES classic, Beyond Good & Evil 2’s E3 embargo dropped and it looks like crap, and Sony thinks cross-platform play isn’t important

Hey Poor Podcast
Hey Poor Podcast Episode 105: You Have To Sell To My Mom
“Wait, wait…I Coleman? Talking about…DOOM?! I need a moment.”

A mom-themed episode of the Hey Poor Podcast? How appropriate! Just in time for Father’s Day! Nathan was off, I dunno, being dead or something, so this week it’s up to I “Talks About The Same Two Videogames Every Week” Coleman, Jay “Great Service Clean Tables” Petrequin, and Anthony “I’m Sorry For The Beginning Of The Podcast” Spivey to wade through the stagnant sea of E3 hype and see if there’s anything left worth talking about. Along the way, Jay and I have another of their trademark Extremely Polite Arguments (this time about Battlefront II), Anthony and I spend way too long extolling the virtues of the Captain Underpants movie, and we actually have time to cover more than two news stories for once in our miserable lives. Plus: the inside scoop on the dark rituals required to become part of the Hey Poor Player Media Empire.
Games/Films/Etc of the week: Jay’s E3 slamdown, Super Mario Odyssey, Star Wars: Battlefront II, Lawbreakers, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, this one weird body mutilation-themed Naruto filler episode, MetaDoom, Battleborn: The Free Trial, EVERSPACE, Wolfenstein 3D
Audience Questions: personalized recommendations from each host, most anticipated of E3, most disappointing of E3
The News: Ashly Burch is not coming back to Life is Strange, Sony executive tells some lies about backwards compatibility, Bethesda claims its paid mods aren’t paid mods, Take Two makes mods illegal, Two Worlds II gets microtransactions 6 year after release, Konami is Konami and Konami is the worst, the Xbox One X is a thing that exists
