My motto, when I was running Radio 702, was If it ain't fun it ain't happening. And, boy was it happening. We worked hard and we played hard. I led the charge. It was unbridled sex and drugs and rock n roll. Unfortunately, there were consequences, but that's for another episode.

If ever you've indulged in Cocaine, you'll know that it makes you feel 10 feet tall and bullet proof. Until it doesn't. It's God's way of telling you you're making too much money. If ever you've been addicted to drugs and/or alcohol you will surely relate to what I share with you in this episode.

As the CEO of Primedia Broadcasting I had at my disposal a BMW limousine equipped with a fridge and a liquor cabinet that allowed me to party without anyone getting injured in the process. I was living the life of a Rockstar. But you can only burn the candle at both ends before you burn out.

Before you attempt to lead others, make sure you can lead yourself. A leader is someone who selects a cause and pursues it with such intensity and passion that they bring others with them. No great deed, public or private has ever happened in a bliss of certainty

Had I not paid heed to an epiphany, I would never have landed up with a lucrative career in radio. My advice is pay heed to those hunches and epiphanies. It might just change your life and lead you on unimagined adventures, as it did in my case.

Your ego is not your amigo. My career as the music manager at Swazi Radio was just starting to take off when they brought in a music manager with far more experience than me. I was demoted to Assistant Music Manager The thought of teaching them a lesson and resigning crossed my mind. Thank goodness I was able to curb my ego. As a result I not only knew everything I knew about radio, but I was also able to learn everything he knew.

Early on in my career, I learned the importance of pivoting away from a strategy, or a course of action that doesn't pan out. The goal stays the same, but the means of achieving it may have to change. The goal is written in ink, the strategy is written in pencil

My career changed drastically when it occurred to me that showbiz is 10% show and 90% business. It's like an iceberg with just the tip showing, while the underside is where the bulk of the iceberg is located. In business terms, the part others see is a small fraction of the activity. The part one doesn't see, is where the hard work takes place. I decided that the business side of things was where I wanted to devote my time and effort. As a result I landed up as the CEO of Primedia Broadcasting.

The non-stop partying would eventually bring me crashing down and I crossed the line into addiction and alcoholism. My life began to resemble a badly designed roller coaster.
