Rocky Snyder joined us in the studio for the first hour. He will be filling in for Rosemary once or twice while she is away in the next couple weeks. Dr. Pete talked about cats and the noises they make, sunburn in cats, skin cancer in cats and cattle, and finally all about something of which he is a fan, registered vet techs. In good news we heard of the photo of a sea otter taken by Shmuel Thaler, and about Francine the wayward cat that was found. Alex did not make it for the movie reviews, but we heard them anyway. The pick of the week was Good Fortune, with Keanu Reeves as an inept Angel Gabriel. Charlie Keutman, after a bit of chat about the Homeless Garden Project, told us what can be planted this time of year to add some Halloween colors to our garden. We heard of Mr. T, the runaway tortoise, who was rescued from train tracks and reunited with his family. Then there was a tale of a stained glass window purchased for 25 dollars, which turned out to likely have belonged to King Robert the first, of England. One of us, before today, had never heard of Overly Attached Girlfriend.

In Good News we heard of John Lodge, leader of the Moody Blues who just died. We learned of a taco hero who saved the day and then got his own reward. Jaime Smith talked shepherd's pie with us. Jeff Manke saw cackling geese in Alameda. He returned recently from a four-day field trip to the eastern Sierras, where the trees are turning color. We learned why there are so few birds in a redwood forest.

We heard of an Australian dog who temporarily became a surrogate mother to a baby koala, carrying the bear on it's back. Then we learned of the Nobel in physics being awarded to a team of three for quantum tunneling. Rachel discussed texting, a book about chickens and how youth is wasted on the young. Trisha Webber, county registrar, joined us to talk about the upcoming election. We heard of the Nobel in medicine being awarded and of treasure found in Florida. Dan Haifley was part of a team given an award for a documentary film about the origins of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary. He told of a treaty recently signed to govern the high seas, which comprise about 60 percent of the world's oceans. In the ag report we heard that harvest time is coming. Many local farms are hosting tours. It is a good time to visit them now.

We may have set a record for number of topics in the good news segment. Chunk was the winner of Fat Bear Week this year. Atlanta has a Sponge Park that cleverly serves a purpose. A 4,500 foot new tunnel linking Austria and Italy will be a boon. Capitola leaders are doing the right thing at Bay Avenue and Hill Street. Jaime Smith talked apples. He did at one point, in discussing tuna salad recipes, say the phrase "Granny Smith." Listen to find out whether he was referring to a relative or a fruit.

A Scottish tree has won tree of the year for the UK. It is an ash. A local fellow from Santa Cruz High has given the proceeds of a lemonade sale to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Over the years he has had other lemonade sales for the same purpose. All together he has raised 27,000 dollars for Second Harvest. Rachael Shelton can elicit the same response in her brother that her grandmother and great uncle used to bring about in her, when quizzing her on her dietary choices. John Laird shared memories of Mike Rotkin, who left us recently. John spoke at his memorial. He was also present for the ground-breaking for the Cabrillo and UCSC housing project that will be located at Cabrillo.

In good news we heard of a young couple going on safari in South Africa who decided to treat the driver who delivered them to the safari, and they paid to take him with them. Then we celebrated all the winners of the apple pie-making contest at this year's Santa Cruz County Fair. In the ag report we heard that cows at the Cotoni-Coast Dairy National Monument will be outfitted with solar powered collars that direct them away from humans. That will allow hikers on trails there to hike unmolested by the local cattle that live there.

Dr. Pete discussed ostriches, including bird flu necessitating the culling of many as well as raising them commercially for food. Also, they are pretty good kickers, according to him. Charlie Keutman drove through the Sierras recently, where he saw Quaking Aspen, which have turned color. That got us to talking about trees that can grow here that turn color, like Chinese Pistache, Ginkgo Biloba, Japanese Maple, Crepe Myrtle and Dogwood. Baily Hogan, marketing manager for Hook stores was with us to talk about her business.

Jaime Smith discussed all manner of salt. We heard of table salt, Kosher salt, pink salt, Maldon salt, smoked salt and Himalayan salt. Scott Rolf from state parks says 4,000 residents filled out the survey telling how they'd like to use Seacliff State Beach. Jeff Manke let us know that last night 100,000 birds migrated south past Santa Cruz. There are lots of shore birds to see in this area, and he let us know several places to view them. We also heard about bossy birds, intoxicated birds and hummingbirds, waxwings and the greater awk.

Liliana Eymann joined us in the studio, with her mother and grandmother. She is a sophomore at Santa Cruz High School. She has been a ballerina since she was three years old. She dances with International Academy of Dance. This year, in their performance of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, Liliana will dance the parts of both Clara and the Snow Queen. Dr. Dawn Motyka gave us the skinny on tylenol, autism and how much truth there is to recent announcements from the FDA.

NASA announces new astronaut class today.  New solar telescope mission launches tomorrow - IMAP Amazing video from blue origin launch of camera in space Another great video - fly through stellar nurseries made by 3D images from Gaia space Telescope Ron Haedicke was happy to report a very successful Santa Cruz County Fair, and pledged to bring it back again next year and again after that.

Sean Burns of the Save the Wave Coalition joined us in the first hour. He told us about an amazing report that puts a dollar value to the worth of surfing. Dr. Pete had a story about an ESA. That stands for emotional support animal, right? Nope. This time it was emotional support alligator. Mange in dogs was thoroughly described, followed by hypothyroidism. What is the winning name in the contest to name the deleafing locomotive in England? Control-Alt-Deleaf. Rosemary and Alex agreed on their picks for movies this week. Number one for each was The Senior. After that, The Lost Bus.

In  good news we had three stories. One was of the aftermath of the terrible wildland fires in Australia in 2019. They were followed by the springing up of 4,000 orchids that had not been seen there in ages. Then we heard of the couple who crashed their car into a mangrove swamp at night. They were able to get 911 by cell phone, and two deputies went into the water. They broke the windows and rescued the couple. Lastly we heard of a school shooting on 9/10 in Colorado. Two students were shot. One shielded the other with his own body. Both survived. We listened to music from Bollywood today, along with some other funky Indian music.
