Gambling Tax Rise, Menopause

The UK House of Commons Treasury Select Committee has been considering arguments for and against the proposed tax increase on the gambling industry, expected to be announced in the UK Budget on 26 November. UK Gaming companies have threatened wide-spread closures if the Chancellor goes ahead with increased taxes. We discussed how this could affect Gibraltar.


But most of today’s episode will focus on menopause. What is it, how does it affect us, and why do we need to talk about it? We took a deep dive into this topic with Dr Reena Verdi, GP and part of the team at the Well Woman clinic; Daniella Payas and Gabriella Agius from the Department of personnel and development; and Petra Boddington, a fully qualified and licensed menopause champion.

Journalist and broadcaster Alice Mascarenhas has launched a new book, Palabras Al Viento, celebrating the writings and radio broadcasts of her father, Manolo Mascarenhas.


We caught up with Gibraltarian Pili Rodriguez, who has been unanimously reappointed as Chair of Citizens Advice International.


The Gibraltar National Museum has signed a landmark scientific cooperation agreement with a University in Marrakech, on bat conservation. Dr Stewart Finlayson explained the significance of this partnership.


And, a fashion show to celebrate 20 years of the Bosom Buddies charitable trust is happening on Thursday. We spoke to the show’s presenters Henry Sacramento and William Gomez.

The Chief Minister told a packed Business Conference at London's Oxo Tower - that the combination of the tax treaty with Spain, and the UK/EU Treaty on Gibraltar, will unleash unprecedented business and investment opportunities, beyond membership of the EU. We listen to part of that fireside chat, which featured the Attorney General Michael Llamas and Fabian Picardo, and was moderated by Peter Montegriffo KC.


Dr Meenal Viz, a Gibraltarian doctor who stood up to the UK government during the Covid-19 pandemic, is now sharing her powerful story of courage, justice, and hope. Her new book traces her journey from Gibraltar to the heart of Westminster, charting how one woman’s protest changed national PPE policy.


The Gibraltar Disability Society has celebrated a £31,000 grant used to enhance equipment and therapies at St Bernadette’s Resource Centre. The funding, secured through the Playtech Recovery and Resilience Fund, has provided vital support for the mental health and wellbeing of people with disabilities. We spoke to Debbie Borastero from the disability society, specialist occupational therapist Rachel Tobelem and drama therapist Nyree Robinson.

On today’s episode we discussed the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Barbados with Minister Leslie Bruzon who will be in the studio, as well as CPA Honorary Secretary of the Branch, Philip Borge McCarthy.


There’s growing concern among parents of Gibraltar’s youth rugby players over a sharp reduction in training time. Tom Tunbridge and Chris Lugnani, representing the parents of Gibraltar’s youth rugby community, spoke to us in the studio.


A charity five-a-side football tournament was taking place from the stadium, raising money for the GBC Open Day, organised by the Peter J. Isola Foundation. We heard from Albert Isola from the Foundation, as well as our sports reporter Jose Mari Ruiz, who was there playing football himself!


And, Journalist and writer Priya Gulraj reflects on “the millennial ache” - reminiscing about cassette tapes, beach days, and long phone calls on landlines. She joined us in the studio with fellow Millennials and GBC journalists Christina Cortes and Michael Beltran.

Entry/Exit System, Diabetes Talk, Art Society, Cadiz 360, Face Off

Works have started to deploy the EU's Entry/Exit system across Schengen Borders. In Spain. The Government says it is reported the Spanish authorities will not apply the EES at the Gibraltar Spain border. It adds the intention – in line with treaty negotiations – is to not have EES applied at the border now or at any point in the future. However, it suggests the public makes itself familiar with those countries using it when travelling, as the Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia explained.


With over 10% of Gibraltar’s population living with diabetes, Diabetes Gibraltar says local awareness and prevention have never been more important. Diet & Nutrition Advisor and Eating Psychology Coach Karen Jacobson will host a Food & Mindset Talk tomorrow, focusing on how nutrition and mental wellbeing can transform overall health. Karen was in the studio along with Susan Edwards from Diabetes Gibraltar.


The Fine Arts Association is hosting a temporary art exhibition. ‘Cadiz 360’ by Cecilio Chaves is on loan from Cadiz University, from today until the 29th of October. It’s an exhibition of some 30 paintings, offering a panoramic view of rooftops in the city of Cadiz. We spoke to Cecilio as well as Patrick Sacarello of the Fine Arts Association.


The Arts Society Gibraltar is preparing to launch its 2025/26 season with the first lecture set for tomorrow at the Garrison Library. The society's Jane Hart talked us through this year’s programme, which is now available online.


Week two of Gibraltar’s first-ever reality TV makeup competition, Face Off: The Next Generation, continues tonight. The competition will feature six challenges, culminating in an exciting final to claim the title of Gibraltar's Next Top Makeup Artist! We're going to be getting to know the contestants better over the coming weeks, starting today with Melaine Garcia and Mathew Moreno.

Midterm Poll, Scott leaves GBC, University Lecture, Sports, Nautilus Project Podcast

A midterm poll, conducted by GBC with Mediatel, suggests a significant swing - in voting intentions - to the GSD, but it’s still all to play for ahead of the next election due to the many who don’t know how they’d vote. At the midway point in the electoral cycle, we asked over 1,000 respondents about their voting intentions in face-to-face interviews over nine days earlier this month. News editor Christine Vasquez went over the findings. 


Kelly-Anne Borge is hosting today’s episode because the Gibraltar Today presenter and Senior Broadcast journalist Jonathan Scott is leaving GBC to take up the post of UK representative and head of Gibraltar House in London, previously held by Dominique Searle. We spoke to Jonathan in the studio from a different mic than what he’s used to.


Local researcher and advocate for wildlife and conservation, Professor Julia Fa, will deliver her inaugural Beacon Professor Lecture tomorrow at the University of Gibraltar. Her talk, titled “Edge of Two Continents: Enabling People and Nature Across the Western Mediterranean”, will explore how people and nature can coexist sustainably across the region.


Our Sports recap with Robin Sheppard-Capurro is dominated by the international football fixtures this weekend, as the GFA took on Croatia which ultimately ended with a loss 3-0. This weekend also saw the end of the paddle tournament, and the third event hosted by the Gibraltar Shore Gigging and Spinning Fishing club.


The Nautilus Project, the marine conservation charity, is teaming up with podcaster Michelle Rugeroni to create a new Nautilus Podcast, bringing you marine science from all around the world. The charity's marine biologist Lewis Stagnetto and presenter of the podcast Michelle Rugeroni told us more.

Treaty Update, EV Bursaries, Anti-Stigma Programme, Sports, Bandslam

The Chief Minister says work on the treaty text is happening on a daily basis, with the Attorney General in Brussels yesterday. Fabian Picardo told GBC that following the negotiations and the agreement, he now has more time to focus on other things. He spoke to our News Editor Christine Vasquez.


A milestone moment for the EV Foundation - one of its bursary students has officially graduated, marking the first-ever graduate from the charity’s education support programme. Founder of the charity, Nicole Jones, told us they aim to break generational cycles through opportunity and empowerment rather than simple financial aid.


‘Let's Talk about It’: There’s a new element in Gibraltar's 5 year Mental Health Strategy. Gibraltar is now part of an Anti-Stigma Capacity Building Programme, which focuses on building capacity and providing support to people with lived experiences to tackle mental health stigma. We spoke to Kayron Pozzo of Public Health Gibraltar. 


Robin Sheppard-Capurro brought us the latest in sport including reactions from the recent international football game against New Caledonia, and looked ahead to the GFA’s world cup qualifier this weekend. He also spoke about what’s coming up in motorbike racing and darts.


And, live music lovers are in for a treat over the coming weeks. Tomorrow night Bandslam 2025 kicks off with the first of three events, featuring 12 talented bands from Gibraltar and Andalucia going head-to-head in a competition. Steven 'Noni' Belilo from the Musicians Association told us more.

Childline/Young Minds, Dyslexia Awareness Week, Parkinson’s Workshop, Photo of the Year

To mark World Mental Health Day tomorrow, Childline Gibraltar, in collaboration with GHA’s Young Minds, will open its helplines for 12 hours; the first time doing so in its 19-year history. Childline’s CEO Caroline Carter was in the studio together with GHA Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Ashim Bettadapura.


Dyslexia Awareness Week is in full flow - with events across Gibraltar highlighting understanding, inclusion, and support for those with dyslexia. Sabrina Mauro and Mandy Gaggero told us about what's happening and how the community can get involved.


The MBS Centre is hosting a free workshop for those living with Parkinson's disease this Saturday. It will be led by Lori Tillman, who will focus on a holistic approach to managing symptoms. Lori shared what inspired her to create this workshop for people with Parkinson’s.


And at the Gibraltar Photographic Society’s second Special Exhibition to commemorate its 60th Anniversary, Prem Mahtani won the prestigious accolade: photographer of the year. It follows success at the National day competition also. We asked Prem what these wins mean to him.

UN General Assembly, Mental Health: What Makes You Happy?

We begin today’s podcast with the Chief Minister’s address to the UN General Assembly in New York, where he accused them of failing to fulfil its mandate, with Gibraltar remaining on its list of non-self-governing territories. Fabian Picardo stressed he was not there to ask for favours but to demand the right to self-determination. Ros Astengo was following the address late last night.


But the majority of this episode focuses on well-being, and how it we can encourage young people to reflect on well-being in today’s connected world. As part of this week’s Gibraltar Schools Mental Health Festival, renowned parenting expert Sue Atkins will lead sessions on navigating the digital age. She was in the studio together with campaigner, lawyer and parent Selwyn Figueras; Havannah Salcedo, a 16-year-old student with clear ideas on the topic; and Secondary school teacher and parent Natalie Massetti. Together, they explored the challenges of raising happy, resilient children in an online world.
