Story Transcript:

En: The sun slowly rose over the Karoo-plateau, and a new school year had begun.

En: There was a freshness in the air, the kind that only spring brings.

En: Little leaves started to show on the kameeldoring trees.

En: Jaco, a quiet boy with a passion for the wilderness of the Karoo, woke up with great excitement.

En: As the sun began to warm the earth, Jaco's thoughts lingered on the special plant he had discovered during the summer.

Af: Daar was iets besonders aan hierdie plant, gedink hy.
En: There was something special about this plant, he thought.

En: Deep down, he knew that this plant could be something extraordinary.

En: School started promptly, but Jaco could only think about the plant.

Af: Sy vriend Pieter moes opspoor waar Jaco was.
En: His friend Pieter had to find out where Jaco was.

En: "Jaco, come, we're going to be late for the first school assembly!" Pieter shouted, but Jaco made a difficult decision.

En: He quickly slipped out of his house and headed towards his secret spot in the vast plains of the Karoo.

Af: Die veld was stil.
En: The field was quiet—only the wind whispered in the grass and the thud of his boots on the ground.

En: Jaco's heart raced as he approached the place of his discovery.

En: With a satisfied sigh, he knelt down and carefully dug out the plant.

En: He knew he had to be back at school before the bell rang.

En: The desert path to the school felt longer than ever, but Jaco's determination led him forward.

En: Just as the bell rang, Jaco reached the school gate.

En: His breath was short, but his eyes shone with pride.

En: Annelie, waiting for him there, wondered if he would make it.

En: "Did you get it?" she asked, worried.

En: Jaco just laughed and held up...
