The Final Episode of the Podcast!

Join Joanna and Emma for the final episode of Fashion not all as it Seams. The last two seasons have been such an amazing experience for us all and we feel really privileged to have hosted such wonderful guests and humbled by the positive feedback to Season 1 and 2. Sadly, we have decided that for the moment this is the end of the podcast. We have found that coordinating 4 co-hosts whilst growing our own businesses has been a challenge and that for now, we need to focus on our individual goals. We continue to support each other's work and are so grateful to have had the chance to create this together.

Fashion- Not all as it seams
From Sheep and Geese Chats to an Innovative Circular Business: The Wool Journey with Ngaire Takano.

Today Emma interviews our very own co-host Ngaire Takano!

Ngaire is untraditional and unorthodox. She leads with values and conviction and deeply cares about sheep, farmers, circularity, traceability and nature She’s been an activist since she was 10 years old - campaigning against deforestation of local rainforests on the east coast of Australia, at 12 years old she helped support a local against a proposed irradiation plant for food - the information she gathered - pre internet- helped support the campaign which led to it not being build locally, , at 15 she was worked on a Merino sheep farm learning the trade and at 16 she started her own business supplying local restaurants with organic and locally grown ingredients.

She really is a living, breathing example of how business should be done. This is the blueprint. But actually, more than that, this is who Ngaire is at a soul level. It’s literally in her blood.

So what, quite literally started as a conversation with sheep and geese a couple of years ago on a farm in Belgium is now at an accelerator stage - we hear about the problems that come with the ideology that is scaling and funding. Yet such is the interest with this business centered around sheep, farmers and wool that Ngaire will be taking it to international stages very soon. And not only is there interest from the fashion and interiors sector but also automobile and packaging. There is so much potential here.

It’s pure innovation AND from the heart.

A business where reciprocity, circularity and connection are at its core. And women owned. We need more Ngaire’s in the world.

How traditional skills of Al Sadu weaving are being carried on by future generations and the need to continue traditional crafts alongside today's modern landscape Part 2

In part 2’s of Emma’s interview with Farah Al Yasin, Head of Creative Residency at Caravane Earth Farah talks about the work in ensuring the traditional skills and knowledge of Al Sadu weaving is being passed onto younger generations. She shares a success story of one particular daughter who, through her mother’s work, saw that these textiles were providing an income, had commercial incentive and is now learning these skills. Farah talks us through how she is shaped by the artisans, how she is their student and how it’s not solely the textiles or weaving but a way of life. To her it’s a vocational school and the hierarchy comes from them. We discuss the importance of continuing traditional craft whilst also understanding contemporary demand and what is relevant in today’s landscape and Farah takes us through what a partnership with a designer or brand would look like with the artisans of Caravane Earth.

Caravane Earth; retrieving traditional knowledge of Al Sadu textiles amongst Bedouin women weavers in Qatar. Part 1

In this very special episode Emma interviews Farah Al Yasin, Head of Creative Residency at Caravane Earth, a Foundation in Qatar that promotes Social, Cultural and Ecological transformation. Farah works with 49 Bedouin women weavers and shares how the values and mission of the Foundation drew her to this work, how this work goes beyond the individual and is part of something significant. A movement for people with purpose. She takes us through the need to return to a simple approach to creation and how Caravane Earth are not reinventing the wheel, rather they are retrieving traditional knowledge and skills and paying tribute to makers and artisans. And how going into the local community has enabled this retrieval and how it has also created a local, transparent and readily available value chain.

How the beauty of handmade, Indigenous communities and descaling are an opportunity for evolution

In this very special episode Emma interviews Kavita Parmar co-founder of XTANT. We explore Kavita's life story, her personal realisations and learnings through her journey with heritage textiles and artisans and why the world needs to stop and urgently listen and learn from Indigenous communities and wisdom.  We discuss the disconnect that has occurred from industrialisation and capitalism and its impact on humanity and nature.  Yet amongst all of this is an exciting opportunity for evolution. To stop thinking large scale - instead descale and have local industries with regenerative cultures. And to exchange and learn from other parts of the world that are connected to and understand that we are all part of a living system - whose relationships within their community, nature and animals are interconnected.  And the work that XTANT is doing and building amongst their growing community to seduce people with the beauty of handmade and going against the grain.

The next XTANT Roots 2024 will take place in Palma de Mallorca from 1-13th of May To contact Kavita you can reach out to insta : @kavitaparmar  and her email : kavita@xtant.ioTo lean more about XTANT check out the website:www.xtant.io and  insta : @_xtant_

About XTANT:
XTANT renewed itself with our fourth annual edition from the 9th to 13th of May 2023 which was truly magical.
Like its previous iterations each year's XTANT has a leitmotif, this year it was ‘Fibra’ for its unique focus on the core, central and most atomic form of textile, The event took over several heritage patios, all walking distance from each other at the very heart of the historic and beautiful streets of Palma de Mallorca. A true celebration of the art in heritage textile craft.
XTANT aims to inspire the new generations to value sustainability, personal identity, tradition and responsible consumption over commercial tendencies based on unbridled consumption. The event offers many moments of reflection and communion with the unique, the beautiful and the long-lasting. Full of enriching conversations, workshops, rituals and textile exhibitions with over 65 master Artisans / activists / designers invited from 23 countries, XTANT| 2023 was a resounding success. Here is one of the keynote speeches by Satish Kumar that beautifully illustrates all the XTANT community values.
