#ableism  #mentalableism #physicalabelism #aspieanswers
Before we dive into the complex and much-hidden concept of ableism, we all need to first understand the very basics of ableism. I did share with you all the very basics of ableism and what you all need to know based on my first video series of this which you can find here above me in the right-hand corner of the screen.
But in brief, ableism is defined by Wikipedia as, "discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities.” What does that really mean, though? Before we can get into that, we must first understand that there are 3 main types of Ableism, each regarding a different type of affected ability and each discriminated against differently. The three types kinds of ableism that were shared today were: Physical ableism, mental ableism, and cultural ableism.

#ableism #negativeattitudesandbeliefs #stigma #stereotyping
An “ableist” belief system often underlies negative attitudes, stereotypes, and stigma toward people with psychosocial disabilities. “Ableism” refers to attitudes in society that devalue and limit the potential of persons with disabilities. Ableism is disablism (Brit. English), androphobia, anapirism, and disability discrimination) is discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities or who are perceived to have disabilities. Ableism characterizes persons as defined by their disabilities and as inferior to the non-disabled. On this basis, people are assigned or denied certain perceived abilities, skills, or character orientations.  There are stereotypes, generally inaccurate, associated with either disability in general, or with specific disabilities (for instance a presumption that all disabled people want to be cured, that wheelchair users necessarily have an intellectual disability, or that blind people have some special form of insight). These stereotypes in turn serve as a justification for ableist practices and reinforce discriminatory attitudes and behaviors toward people who are disabled. Labeling affects people when it limits their options for action or changes their identity and self-worth along with their self-esteem.

#ableism #typesofableism #impactsofableism #solutions
I shared briefly the different types of ableism that we should know about or educate ourselves better on. You may have heard some of these terms for different types of this or not but here to share with you today about them and also the impact that it has on people with different disabilities. The one important one of the ableism types that I shared is benevolent ableism as well as sharing what the problem with this one is and how we can help others with different disabilities.

DISCLAIMER/TRIGGER WARNING - I'm no medical doctor, if you see any signs and/or symptoms that I've mentioned in the past or present videos, do seek a medical doctor or second opinion. Or, some of the things I'm sharing with you are based on my experiences, and do take them with a grain of salt as well as also what I suggest as a way to help you may work for you but not for me and what may work for me not work for you. I would like us all to respect each other based on our decisions no matter what they are.
Welcome back, I am now sharing with you all the journey of my diagnosis as now I've been told by the accessor from SPELDADD Palmerston North that they are located in the Grand Hotel, Square Edge, Palmerston North, and the website is https://www.speladd.org.nz/ that it's now leaning towards the diagnosis of ADHD. This reassessment for my diagnosis was recommended by two people and they were Nick Stoneman from Disability Advisory Trust in Christchurch NZ you can contact him on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NZDisabilityAdvisoryTrust and the other recommendation was from my connect at Manawhaikaha Palmerston North that's under MidCentral Health or Ministry of Health NZ and that their contact details are https://www.manawhaikaha.co.nz/
What happened during the time of my diagnosis she asked me a few questions as they do to get to the conclusion of what diagnosis it is,
who diagnosed me, when, what I do for my diagnosis (treatment and/or therapies), and what medications - do I take any?
I told her my views about medications and then did the three-hour assessment.
After the assessment was completed, she gave me a few recommendations based on my results completed.

So, you may have so many questions to self-diagnosing yourself based on the diagnosis that you suspect that you may have. Do you think is it worth it? Is it safe Why do people self-diagnose? Is it valid for getting an autistic diagnosis or even sometimes for mental illnesses? Many late-identified autistic adults choose not to seek a formal autism diagnosis, but is self-diagnosis of autism valid? It's a common question that many of us need to face in the journey to understand ourselves and what autism means in our life. You will have to watch/listen to my answer to this question. Enjoy. *ABOUT ME*

In this episode today I covered a quick overview of what I shared in the last podcast which was the pros and cons of getting a diagnosis or not. This one covered a backstory of my diagnosis story along with also sharing what self-diagnosis is and what self-diagnosis isn't. Along with this, I shared also with you all my afterthoughts on this along with why people are opposed to self-diagnosis. *ABOUT ME*

Have you ever wondered to yourself if you wanted to get the diagnosis and didn't know what to do or even knew that you had something that may have propped up as a formal diagnosis? Self-diagnosis is common among adults on the Autism Spectrum. While some receive a late Aspergers diagnosis, those who discover Aspergers/Autism for themselves don't always choose to follow up this self-discovery with an official diagnosis. Here today, I am officially sharing with you more about having it with the pros and cons to help you to decide is it worth it or not. As you're aware that most of the time, I do love to have lists to balance up the pros and cons of any given situation that I'm facing to come up with a possible solution. I hope that this helps you all today.
Disclaimer: I'm no medical doctor, I'm just your normal Jo Blogs, so if you see anything out of the ordinary of the signs and symptoms that I've shared in the past or present, do seek a second opinion or advice. Also, as you've noticed that for many years that there have been so many different clinical terms that have been interchanged in the diagnosis field and I'll do my utmost best to not offend anyone especially those on the spectrum but my advice to you all is to ask an autistic to how they want to be called.

Getting an adult autism diagnosis is fraught with uncertainty, and once you’ve had your "lightbulb" moment that you think you might be autistic, the first thing you have to figure out is “should I get assessed for autism?”  There are many pros and cons to getting a late autism diagnosis, and while this video is not comprehensive, I talk about the various factors that might help you decide whether or not it’s worth pursuing an autism diagnosis in adulthood.
Disclaimer: I'm no medical doctor, I'm just your normal Jo Bloggs so if you see anything out of the ordinary, do seek professional help or a second opinion from a medical specialist. There have been many clinical terms that have been interchanged for so many years so I'll do my utmost best to use the correct terms yet in saying that be sure to ask an autistic to how they want to be called.

If your older or teenage child is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD),  the autism diagnosis can help you get services and funding to support your child’s development.    I also talked about the importance of diagnosis in teens and how you can do this with your teen for the diagnosis.

Whether you're a parent or a high-school teacher, or a carer in the care of a teenager that you feel that they look, act and sound different. Chances are, you're probably right. The chances are, you may have noticed some "abnormalities" in a teenager. Some of it may just seem like social awkwardness, but maybe you've noticed some other odd behaviors in this teen, or it just feels to you like there's something more to this teen than the typical "social awkwardness". In some cases, a person in their teenage years may be autistic, and they weren't diagnosed as a child. Autism can be difficult for a teen to cope with, but it's not nearly as terrible as others make it out to be, and understanding why your teen is the way they are can help them - and you - be happier and be more at peace now that you have a diagnosis for your teen. I am here to give you some tips/advice on how to spot them as early as possible. The earlier the better so that you can get the best treatment, therapy, etc for your teen.
