"Inside _Shift" - Emily Penn

"Inside Shift" is a bonus episode series recorded at Space Group's annual _Shift conference. The conference brings together industry leaders and "empowered agents of change" to discuss strategies for decarbonising the built environment. I was lucky enough to interview all of the speakers and panellists at this year's conference.

In this episode, I interview Emily Penn, Emily is an ocean advocate, skipper, impassioned expert on plastic pollution and founder of eXXpedition.

She graduated from Cambridge with a degree in Architecture and a job offer in Australia, but, after rounding the globe on the record-breaking biofuelled boat Earthrace, her life changed forever.

For 15 years she’s been at the helm of change: putting the plastics issue on the map, shaping the conversation and catalysing action. Her unique combination of science, activism, and adventure has made her a key figure in environmental advocacy.

"Inside _Shift" - John Elkington

"Inside Shift" is a bonus episode series recorded at Space Group's annual _Shift conference. The conference brings together industry leaders and "empowered agents of change" to discuss strategies for decarbonising the built environment. I was lucky enough to interview all of the speakers and panellists at this year's conference.

In this episode, I interview John Elkington, founder & chief Pollinator at Volans.

John is one of the founders of the global sustainability movement. He has worked as a strategic advisor to businesses across the globe for 50 years and has co-founded four businesses since 1978. In 1994, John coined the phrase; ‘Triple Bottom Line,’ and in 1995 the popularisation ‘People, Planet and Profit’. His advocacy for corporate responsibility and sustainable development has inspired countless leaders, policymakers, and organisations to rethink their strategies for long-term success.

Hello and welcome to episode 14 of Archipod.

Today I am joined by Daniel Goodricke and Luke Murray. Daniel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture and Built Environment at Northumbria University. Daniel works with a range of years, including the architect (level 7) degree apprenticeship. Luke is a senior lecturer at Ravensbourne University London, leading the BA (Hons) Architecture course. Luke previously worked at London South Bank University where he was involved in discussions with the trailblazer group that created the standard for Architecture degree apprenticeships (levels 6 and 7).

The book is being published by the RIBA and is available to preorder through RIBA books. It will also be available in different bookshops nationwide including Amazon and WHSmith. The handbook is due to be published around June time.

In this episode, we speak about what an architecture degree apprenticeship is. Luke and Daniel offer advice and information to both prospective degree apprenticeship students and mentors/practices.

Episode 13 - Finishing our bachelor's degree and reflecting on our time at University (With Laura Cartledge, Lauren Dack and Kathryn Taylor)

Hello and welcome to episode 13 of Archipod,

I cannot believe that this episode marks the end of our Bachelor's degree, such a long and crazy journey and what better way to reflect on our experience at university? This episode was actually recorded before our degree show but during the move from Newcastle, I lost the recording. Now that I am back in Newcastle and have found the recording (whewwww) I can finally share this episode. I am not going to lie, this episode is chaotic but if you know us then that will make perfect sense and I hope nonetheless you enjoy it!

In this episode, we reflect on our journey throughout our bachelor's and how we found third-year Architecture. I think that third year was definitely the year I flourished and I am so thankful to my peers and mentors for supporting me throughout my studies. Northumbria is where Archipod was born and I will continue to look back with happy memories.

Enjoy!

Episode 12 - The Architect's role during the Climate Crisis - how can we help? (With Rob Charlton)

Hello and Welcome to episode 12 of Archipod!

After a small break, Archipod is back! In this episode, I am joined by Rob Charlton. Rob is currently chief executive at Spacegroup, which is the "umbrella" role over several companies including SPACE Architects (UK). Rob shows great passion and positivity toward fighting climate change and today we discuss how we, as architects, can help reduce the carbon footprint in the construction and occupation of buildings. Climate change is not new to anyone and it's really easy to feel helpless, but we as the new generation of architects have a role to play in combatting climate change and to quote Rob, "Challenges are opportunities".

I came out of the recording session feeling inspired, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Thank you for your continued support.

Hello and welcome to episode 10 of Archipod!

Today I am joined by Oliver and Imogen who both work at MawsonKerr Architects (a small practice based in Newcastle Upon Tyne) and in this episode, we discuss the different routes into architectural careers. Imogen is working as a part II Architectural designer at MawsonKerr and currently doing her Part II through the degree apprenticeship at Northumbria University, she discusses what it is like to work alongside her studies as well as the route to part III as a DA student. Oliver is a fully qualified architect and works full-time as a project architect at MawsonKerr, he is also a trustee of the Northern architectural association and in this episode, he discusses his experience through Masters and Part III as well as working alongside his Masters.

Thank you for listening and enjoy!

** I apologise for any background noises, we recorded this episode in MawsonKerr's working office (which is really cool by the way) **

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has listened so far. If someone told me a year ago that I have recorded, edited and released 10 episodes of an architecture podcast, I would have laughed in their face. I am so thankful for everyone who has participated in the episodes so far, I can't believe that I get to talk and discuss architecture with people that I look up to and admire so much. A huge reason I started Archipod was because of the lack of information there was about architectural education and careers, I had a lot of questions and I knew everyone else did too. I started my degree in covid, and I found it difficult to put myself out there and ask the questions that I wanted to ask, so I thought "hey, why not start an architecture podcast?" but I never thought it would become what it has. I've learnt a lot through these podcasts and I feel prepared to move into my architectural career. I hope it has helped you as much as it has helped me and thank you for listening to ten episodes of my dumb voice :)
