Broken Heartlands: A Journey Through Labour's Lost England by Sebastian Payne
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/506120 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Broken Heartlands: A Journey Through Labour's Lost England Author: Sebastian Payne Narrator: Sebastian Payne Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 12 hours 0 minutes Release date: September 16, 2021 Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics Publisher's Summary: Broken Heartlands is an essential and compelling political road-trip through ten constituencies that tell the story of Labour’s red wall, by Sebastian Payne – an award-winning journalist and Whitehall Editor for the Financial Times. The Times Political Book of the Year A Daily Telegraph, Guardian, Daily Mail and FT Book of the Year 'Immensely readable' - Observer Historically, the red wall formed the backbone of Labour’s vote in the Midlands and the North of England but, during the 2019 general election, it dramatically turned Conservative for the first time in living memory, redrawing the electoral map in the process. Originally from the North East himself, Payne sets out to uncover the real story behind the red wall and what turned these seats blue. Beginning in Blyth Valley in the North East and ending in Burnley, with visits to constituencies across the Midlands and Yorkshire along the way, Payne gets to the heart of a key political story of our time that will have ramifications for years to come. While Brexit and the unpopularity of opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn are factors, there is a more nuanced story explored in Broken Heartlands – of how these northern communities have fared through generational shifts, struggling public services, de-industrialization and the changing nature of work. Featuring interviews with local people, plus major political figures from both parties – including Boris Johnson and Sir Keir Starmer – Payne explores the significant role these social and economic forces, decades in the making, have played in this fundamental upheaval of the British political landscape. 'Impressive and entertaining' - Sunday Times 'A must-read for anyone who wants to understand England today' - Robert Peston

Training for Catastrophe: Fictions of National Security after 9/11 by Lindsay Thomas
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/502331 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Training for Catastrophe: Fictions of National Security after 9/11 Author: Lindsay Thomas Narrator: Karen Peakes Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 9 hours 12 minutes Release date: May 11, 2021 Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics Publisher's Summary: Why would the normally buttoned-down national security state imagine lurid future scenarios like a zombie apocalypse? In Training for Catastrophe, author Lindsay Thomas shows how our security regime reimagines plausibility to focus on unlikely and even unreal events rather than probable ones. With an in-depth focus on preparedness (a pivotal, emergent national security paradigm since 9/11) she explores how fiction shapes national security. Thomas finds fiction at work in unexpected settings, from policy documents and workplace training manuals to comics and video games. Through these texts—as well as plenty of science fiction—she examines the philosophy of preparedness, interrogating the roots of why it asks us to treat explicitly fictional events as real. Thomas connects this philosophical underpinning to how preparedness plays out in contemporary politics, emphasizing how it uses aesthetic elements like realism, genre, character, and plot to train people both to regard some disasters as normal and to ignore others. Training for Catastrophe makes an important case for how these documents elicit consent and compliance. Thomas draws from a huge archive of texts to ask difficult questions about the uses and values of fiction.

A Fortress in Brooklyn: Race, Real Estate, and the Making of Hasidic Williamsburg by Michael Casper, Nathaniel Deutsch
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/514146 to listen full audiobooks. Title: A Fortress in Brooklyn: Race, Real Estate, and the Making of Hasidic Williamsburg Author: Michael Casper, Nathaniel Deutsch Narrator: Steven Jay Cohen Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 13 hours 32 minutes Release date: May 11, 2021 Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics Publisher's Summary: The epic story of Hasidic Williamsburg, from the decline of New York to the gentrification of Brooklyn. Hasidic Williamsburg is famous as one of the most separatist, intensely religious, and politically savvy communities in the entire United States. Less known is how the community survived in one of New York City's toughest neighborhoods during an era of steep decline, only to later oppose and also participate in the unprecedented gentrification of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Nathaniel Deutsch and Michael Casper unravel the fascinating history of how a community of determined Holocaust survivors encountered, shaped, and sometimes fiercely resisted the urban processes that transformed their gritty neighborhood, from white flight and the construction of public housing to rising crime, divestment of city services, and, ultimately, extreme gentrification. By showing how Williamsburg's Hasidim avoided assimilation, Deutsch and Casper present both a provocative counter-history of American Jewry and a novel look at how race, real estate, and religion intersected in the creation of a quintessential, and yet deeply misunderstood, New York neighborhood.

Postcapitalist Desire: The Final Lectures by Mark Fisher

Title: Postcapitalist Desire: The Final Lectures Author: Mark Fisher Narrator: Tom Lawrence Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 7 hours 31 minutes Release date: May 11, 2021 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 4.5 of Total 2 Ratings of Narrator: 5 of Total 1 Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics Publisher's Summary: Edited with an introduction by Matt Colquhoun, this collection of lecture notes and transcriptions reveals acclaimed writer and blogger Mark Fisher in his element — the classroom — outlining a project that Fisher's death left so bittersweetly unfinished. Beginning with that most fundamental of questions — 'Do we really want what we say we want?' — Fisher explores the relationship between desire and capitalism, and wonders what new forms of desire we might still excavate from the past, present, and future. From the emergence and failure of the counterculture in the 1970s to the continued development of his left-accelerationist line of thinking, this volume charts a tragically interrupted course for thinking about the raising of a new kind of consciousness, and the cultural and political implications of doing so. For Fisher, this process of consciousness raising was always, fundamentally, psychedelic — just not in the way that we might think...

The Tyranny of Big Tech by Josh Hawley
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/511979 to listen full audiobooks. Title: The Tyranny of Big Tech Author: Josh Hawley Narrator: Tom Parks Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 6 hours 24 minutes Release date: May 4, 2021 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 4.46 of Total 13 Ratings of Narrator: 4.67 of Total 3 Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics Publisher's Summary: Amassing unimaginable amounts of personal data, giants like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple—once symbols of American ingenuity and freedom—have become a techno-oligarchy with overwhelming economic and political power. Decades of unchecked data collection have given Big Tech more targeted control over Americans’ daily lives than any company or government in the world. In this book, Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri argues that these mega-corporations—controlled by the robber barons of the modern era—are the gravest threat to American liberty in decades. To reverse course, Hawley argues that we must correct progressives’ mistakes of the past. That means recovering the link between liberty and democratic participation, building an economy that makes the working class strong, independent, and beholden to no one, and curbing the influence of corporate and political elites. Big Tech and its allies do not deal gently with those who cross them, and Senator Hawley proudly bears his own battle scars. But hubris is dangerous. The time is ripe to overcome the tyranny of Big Tech by reshaping the business and legal landscape of the digital world.

The War on Science: Who's waging it, why it matters, what we can do about it. by Shawn Otto
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/498956 to listen full audiobooks. Title: The War on Science: Who's waging it, why it matters, what we can do about it. Author: Shawn Otto Narrator: Peter Berkrot Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 20 hours 12 minutes Release date: January 1, 2021 Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics Publisher's Summary: Every so often an audio book comes along that changes the way you view the world. The War on Science: Who's Waging It, Why It Matters, What We Can Do About It by Shawn Otto is one of those rare audio books. If you care about attacks on climate science and the rise of authoritarianism, if you care about biased media coverage or shake-your-head political tomfoolery, this audio book is for you. "The Definitive Book on Science Denialism in America" "The war on science is real, and we ignore it at our peril" "Wherever the people are well informed," Thomas Jefferson wrote, "they can be trusted with their own government." But what happens when they are not? In every issue of modern society-from climate change to vaccinations, transportation to technology, health care to defense-we are in the midst of an unprecedented expansion of scientific progress and a simultaneous expansion of danger. At the very time we need them most, scientists and the idea of objective knowledge are being bombarded by a vast, well-funded, three-part war on science. The result is an unprecedented erosion of thought in Western democracies as voters, policymakers, and justices actively ignore the evidence from science, leaving major policy decisions to be based on the demands of the most strident voices. Shawn Otto's provocative audio book investigates the historical, social, philosophical, political, and emotional reasons for why and how evidence-based politics are in decline and authoritarian politics are once again on the rise, and offers a vision, an argument, and compelling solutions to bring us to our collective senses, before it's too late.

[Spanish] - Victoria Woodhull.
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/499175 to listen full audiobooks. Title: [Spanish] - Victoria Woodhull.
