    Temporal evolution and rigidity dependence of the solar modulation lag of Galactic cosmic rays by Nicola Tomassetti et al. on Monday 21 November When traveling in the heliosphere, Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) are subjected to the solar modulation effect, a quasiperiodical change of their intensity caused by the 11-year cycle of solar activity. Here we investigate the association of solar activity and cosmic radiation over five solar cycles, from 1965 to 2020, using a collection of multichannel data from neutron monitors, space missions, and solar observatories. In particular, we focus on the time lag between the monthly sunspot number and the GCR flux variations. We show that the modulation lag is subjected to a 22-year periodical variation, ranging from about 2 to 14 months and following the polarity cycle of the Sun's magnetic field. We also show that the lag is remarkably decreasing with increasing energy of the GCR particles. These results reflect the interplay of basic physics phenomena that cause the GCR modulation effect: the drift motion of charged particles in the interplanetary magnetic field, the latitudinal dependence of the solar wind, the energy dependence of their residence time in the heliosphere. Based on this interpretation, we end up with a global effective formula for the modulation lag and testable predictions for the flux evolution of cosmic particles and antiparticles over the solar cycle. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.05693v2

    Low-Energy Electron-Track Imaging for a Liquid Argon Time-Projection-Chamber Telescope Concept using Probabilistic Deep Learning by M. Buuck et al. on Monday 21 November The GammaTPC is an MeV-scale single-phase liquid argon time-projection-chamber gamma-ray telescope concept with a novel dual-scale pixel-based charge-readout system. It promises to enable a significant improvement in sensitivity to MeV-scale gamma-rays over previous telescopes. The novel pixel-based charge readout allows for imaging of the tracks of electrons scattered by Compton interactions of incident gamma-rays. The two primary contributors to the accuracy of a Compton telescope in reconstructing an incident gamma-ray's original direction are its energy and position resolution. In this work, we focus on using deep learning to optimize the reconstruction of the initial position and direction of electrons scattered in Compton interactions, including using probabilistic models to estimate predictive uncertainty. We show that the deep learning models are able to predict locations of Compton scatters of MeV-scale gamma-rays from simulated pixel-based data to better than 0.6 mm RMS error, and are sensitive to the initial direction of the scattered electron. We compare and contrast different deep learning uncertainty estimation algorithms for reconstruction applications. Additionally, we show that event-by-event estimates of the uncertainty of the locations of the Compton scatters can be used to select those events that were reconstructed most accurately, leading to improvement in locating the origin of gamma-ray sources on the sky. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2207.07805v2

    The mass-radius relation of intermediate-mass planets outlined by hydrodynamic escape and thermal evolution by Daria Kubyshkina et al. on Monday 21 November We employ planetary evolution modeling to reproduce the MR distribution of the 198 so far detected planets with mass and radius measured to the <45% and <15% level, respectively, and less massive than 108Me. We simultaneously account for atmospheric escape, based on the results of hydrodynamic models, and thermal evolution, based on planetary structure evolution models. Since high-energy stellar radiation affects atmospheric evolution, we account for the entire range of possible stellar rotation histories. To set the planetary parameters at formation, we use analytical approximations based on formation models. Finally, we build a grid of synthetic planets with parameters reflecting those of the observed distribution. The predicted radius spread reproduces well the observed MR distribution, except for two distinct groups of outliers (~20% of the population). The first one consists of close-in Saturn-mass planets with Jupiter-like radii for which we underpredict the radius likely because it lacks additional heating similar to that responsible for inflation in hot Jupiters. The second group consists of warm sub-Neptunes, which should host massive primordial H-dominated atmospheres, but instead present high densities indicative of small gaseous envelopes. This suggests that their formation, internal structure, and evolution are different from that of atmospheric evolution through the escape of H-dominated envelopes accreted onto rocky cores. The observed characteristics of low-mass planets (<10-15Me) strongly depend on the impact of atmospheric escape, and thus on the evolution of the host star, while primordial parameters are less relevant.
