Welcome to back to You Gotta Try This! This is the final episode in our latest series, Waking Up to the Patriarchy. Thisseason, we’re pulling back the curtain to see how patriarchy is functioning under the surface, shaping our entire society. In the finale, we’ll explore how patriarchy harms women: through design that overlooks us, through medical research that has excluded us, through marriage expectations that drain us, andthrough norms that perpetuate domestic violence and sexual assault.

This month we're reading Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. As we come to the end of the Waking Up to the Patriarchy series on the main show, this book brings the real plight of women and girls into the light. It’s been called “a passionate call to arms against our era’s most pervasive human rights violation: the oppression of women and girls in the developing world.”

On the first Friday of every month, I choose a new book for our book group, You Gotta Read This!
This month I'm choosing Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation. It's written by historian Kristin Kobes DuMez (a professor at my alma mater, Calvin University!). It is a New York Times bestseller, and it was the publisher's "surprise hit" of 2020.
It's a great complement to our new series, "Waking Up to the Patriarchy." Get yourself a copy and prepare for a wild ride through 75 years of masculinity, religion and politics in the United States.
You can find it in our Bookshop, along with all the other books we've ever recommended on the show. (We get a small commission for all books you purchase through the site.)

Welcome to the first episode of our new series on You Gotta Try This, where we’re pulling back the curtain on the hidden system shaping all of our lives: PATRIARCHY.
In this series, you’ll hear why patriarchy is bad for everyone, not just women. From everyday language to education, religion, sports, healthcare, and beyond, we’ll explore how patriarchy operates—often invisibly—and why it’s time to wake up and name it.
This episode lays the foundation for what’s to come: stories, insights, truth-telling, and a collective awakening. As Angela Davis said, “I’m no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I’m changing the things I cannot accept.” Let’s create a new society in which women and men are truly equal.

April is National Poetry Month, and I love poetry. This month’s selection is a new favorite: A Bit Much, by Lyndsay Rush. It’s been described as poetry for people who didn’t know they liked poetry, so if that’s you, give it a try! She’s clever and witty, and uses humor to describe the female experience. In this episode, you’ll hear the titular poem, “She’s A Bit Much,” which is one of my favorites.

This month, for Women’s History Month, I’m selecting abook that has been profoundly enlightening to me in that space. It’s called The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. It’s written by Beth Allison Barr, who is a historian, a professor, and Baptist preacher’s wife. It’s about how the church developed the gendered hierarchy it calls biblical manhood and womanhood. Through historical and scriptural analysis, Barr shows how biblical womanhood isn’t biblical.

We've got another bite-size episode today with a very effective sleep hack. It's called cognitive shuffling, and if you ever have trouble falling asleep, this one is for you.
The technique was developed by Professor Luc Beaudoin in 2013, and it's so easy anyone can do it.
