What do you do when your own child says she doesn’t want to become like you?
In this conversation with Yuying Deng, a lawyer-turned-tech founder and one of Singapore’s most quietly powerful women in leadership. I dive into the messy, honest side of career growth, motherhood, and building a company from scratch.
We talk about the pressure on women leaders, the guilt every working mom carries, and how she balances logic, intuition, and entrepreneurship in Singapore’s fast-moving tech world.
Yuying also shares how growing up inside a nursing home shaped her leadership mindset and why fulfillment isn’t something you chase, it’s something you notice.
If you want a real, unfiltered look at women leadership, resilience, and what it actually takes to build a meaningful career, tune in now!

She led billion-dollar teams, built movements for women across Asia… and once wished her mother would run away.
In this episode, I sit down with Uma Thana Balasingam - leadership strategist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Lean In Singapore, Walk the Talk and Elevate Group. A woman who was born in Malaysia and has sat in the world’s most powerful boardrooms, yet found her deepest lessons in forgiveness, vulnerability, and learning to ask for help.
We talk about reinvention born from survival - the little girl who dreamed of escaping a broken home, who learned politics as empathy, and who built success not to prove herself, but to finally feel safe.
We talk about the cost of becoming “the strong one.” And realising that caring for everyone else means nothing if you forget to care for yourself.
And we talk about softness - how, after decades of holding others, Uma is learning to be held.
