Episode 23: Wildlife Conversations with Alex Stavrou & Evan Watts

| Wildlife Conversations with Alex Stavrou and Evan Watts, Episode 23 |

Wildlife Conversations welcomes documentary filmmaker Alex Stavrou and wildlife photographer Evan Watts to discuss the new documentary, 399 Forever.

In a world full of social media, influencers, and photographers, how did this affect Grizzly 399 and her fame and at what price? Alex explores bear viewing in this new age and some of the Greater Yellowstone photographers and guides who know her story and how it’s affected their careers, their photography, adaptation, conservation, and their own lives.

We hear from wildlife photographer and YouTuber Evan Watts, as well, and learn more about his participation in the documentary. Evan also shares some of his beautiful work with us, including the iconic image of Grizzly 399 and Spirit on the day they emerged from the den.

Listen in as we talk about. . .

- Grizzly 399 and her legacy

- their journey to photography and filmmaking

- what drew them to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem

- how social media changes the way we coexist with grizzlies in the GYE

- social media, bear jams, and Grizzly 399

- Introversion and being alone in nature vs. the social game of a wildlife photographer

- Grizzly 610s accident and ethical practices

- the loss of Grizzly 399 and what that means for the future

- ways we can coexist with bears (bear resistant trash cans, reduced speed limits, education, awareness)

Episode 22: Wildlife Conversations with Subha Joshi

I welcomed San Francisco photographer Subha Joshi to Wildlife Conversations for Episode 22! Her stunning work captures everything from Alaskan bears, wolves, hummingbirds, foxes, and bison to intimate lupine meadows and foggy urban landscapes.

Based in San Francisco and an engineer by training, Subha found her love of photography in 2019. It started with a friend’s daughter’s birthday party and then a visit to a local camera club; her story will resonate with you, I’m sure.

A Canon shooter, she loves photographing wildlife, birds, and intimate/abstract landscapes and strives to be able to find a scene worth capturing anywhere.

Subha and I met quickly last summer in Alaska, her favorite place to shoot, and I can’t for you to listen to her story!

We discuss:

  • Finding her voice behind the lens
  • Seeing the beauty in ordinary things each day and challenging yourself to make an image
  • Photographing what one likes, not what Instagram likes
  • Photographing ethically
  • How photography helps our mental health
  • Creating and taking up space as a woman
  • Photographing locally and finding a camera club and mentor
  • LIVE Q&A and the speed round, plus so much more!

Episode 16: Wildlife Conversations with Tiffany Taxis

Wildlife Conversations, Episode 16 with Tiffany Taxis

I was honored to have the talented, young wildlife photographer Tiffany Taxis on with me for Episode 16!

Tiffany grew up in Florida, but in 2020, what was supposed to be a short trip to Wyoming revealed a talent for capturing the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and its wildlife (and a much longer stay!).

Her portfolio is filled with dramatic and ethereal images, which have been featured by notable platforms such as Petapixel, BBC, Prints for Wildlife, and OM SYSTEM.

As an OM System ambassador and guide in the Tetons and Alaska, Tiffany shared some of her images with me and  her mission to share wildlife with others. Loved our discussion!

Episode 15: Wildlife Conversations with Dee Webb

| Wildlife Conversations Episode 15 with Dee Webb |

I was excited to talk with photographer Dee Webb because I think she's someone we all can relate to.

We’ve talked a lot on this podcast about how nature and wildlife photography can be a haven from the rest of the world, that it has even been healing for some of us. Well, Dee found photography during a hard time in her life and it became her passion, which transformed into her full-time profession.

Splitting her time between the breathtaking landscapes of Waterton Lakes, Canada, and the vibrant ecosystems of Costa Rica, she guides photographers through private workshops and transformative retreats.

She combines her expertise in photography, yoga therapy, and mindfulness to create experiences that help participants reconnect with nature and themselves. Listen in as she walks us through some of those mindset tips and her beautiful images!

Episode 13: Wildlife Conversations with Peter Ismert

Wildlife Conversations Episode 13 with Peter Ismert (@peterismert) Talks Africa, Alaska, and Maximizing your Travels for the Best Images

Whether it’s images close to home or those from Africa, Alaska, or Yellowstone, I have been an admirer of Peter’s work for some time now. His passion for wildlife photography and the effort he puts into his pursuits is evident, and his use of backlighting and low light is exceptional.

On Episode 13, we get to hear about his recent travels to Kenya and Uganda to see gorillas, chimps, golden monkeys, and shoebill storks. Peter will share with us how he figures out where to go, the importance of guided vs. non-guided trips, gear to pack, etc.

Peter shared tips for traveling to Africa and Alaska and the way he revisits places multiple times to improve his images and photography.

Also, we will build on previous conversations on the podcast regarding the components of wildlife photography. If there are the 2 components (technical and creative), then maybe there is the third - the practicalities of travel and being in the field. How do we know where to go for certain species, how do we get there, weather, light, etc. And then once we are on the ground, what do we do?

Peter’s extensive travels and portfolio gave us a real glimpse into how to maximize our opportunities when researching and executing trips in wildlife photography.

Episode 11: Wildlife Conversations with Amy Harris

Wildlife Photographer Amy Harris, based in Colorado, joined me for Episdoe 11 of the Wildlife Conversations podcast, and we had a great discussion about her photography journey, risk, growth, gratitude, faith, and connection. Amy shared images from her recent trip to Africa, Alaska, Brazil, Norway, and Arizona, and also talked about shooting one of her favorite local creatures, deer. We discussed the obstables women face to travel and spending money on photography and how we can reframe our thinking to see opportunity, growth, and the opportunity to be role model for our children and other photographers. She also shared how faith and joy are a huge part of how she sees the world and tries to find beauty in the small and big things, even in the dark times. Photography has opened lots of doors to connection, community, adventure, and joy for Amy, and that is evident in our discussion.

Let me know in the comments what you learned from her and what you loved about our conversation. __________ WHERE TO FIND AMY Instagram: @adventure.amy Facebook: Animal Adventures by Amy TikTok: Animal Adventures by Amy __________ www.jenlritchie.com Instagram: @jenlritchie Join my email list and check out my free guide --- 10 Tips for Beginner Wildlife Photographers to Up Your Creativity & Confidence: https://jenlritchie.com/freeguide/ You can see my gear list here. __________
