Adventurous story of Grauburgunder in Italy!

Hello and welcome to the 4th episode of our podcast "Why White Wine", in which we taste white wine on air! Today's guest on the table is the famous grape, known by various names and with a rich and adventurous history.

Grauburgunder, Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris has been known since the Middle Ages in the Burgundy region, where it was probably called Fromenteau.

From Burgundy, it spread together with Pinot Noir and arrived in Switzerland around 1300. According to reports, the vine was a favorite of Emperor Charles IV, who had cuttings exported to Hungary by Cistercian monks : the friars planted the vines on the slopes of Badacsony on Lake Balaton in 1375. The vine was soon given the name Szürkebará, which means "gray monk".

In 1711, a German merchant named Johann Seger Ruland (re)discovered a wild grape growing in the fields of the Palatinate . The wine he subsequently produced became known as Ruländer, and the grape was later discovered as Pinot Gris.
