White People Won't Save You
Sheena
“See, even in chains we can defeat them. Turn your minds back my people. Remember yourself a thousand, thousand moons ago. Bring your bows!” All of this dialogue was spoken by a white woman in chains standing over an African tribe and that's really all you need to know about 1984's Sheena. Based on the comic book series of the same name, Sheena is a wild ride that made us ask why is the villain an African prince/celebrity/NFL kicker? Is that really how you pronounce shaman? And how unsafe was this set as clearly very real animals where running into very real people.  Guess what! That comic project Jordan has been talking about forever? It's finally on the way! Ancestral Recall will be in stores August 6th wherever you get your comics. It follows an eccentric painter who can tap into the power of historical Black figures and travels time and space to find his wife/fight a sentient AI corporation from the future. All very timely.  Also be on the lookout for our rescheduled book club and movie club soon. Die Hard With A Vengance
Is it only April? We hope everyone has been doing well and hanging in there. Hopefully today's episode will help up lift some spirits because we've got a fun one with 1995's Die Hard With a Vengeance. Not only was Jordan surprised to learn this is actually the third film in the series, but also that it could have also co-starred Laurence Fishburne instead of Sam Jackson.  It also lets us ask a lot of important questions like who was the first Black person to save the world on film and what if Simon Gruber asked questions only about Black history?  Our book club is starting up soon! Coming up on Sunday April 27th we'll be discussing Eve Ewing's Original Sin which explores the intentional failures of America's education system when it comes to Black and Indigenous children specifically. We'll be talk about it on our IG (@whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod) and on our discord so be sure to join us on both.  We'll be back in two weeks with Academy award winner Adrian Brody in the very confusing Chinese blockbuster, Dragon Gate.

The Soloist
Oscar season might be over but that doesn't mean we still can't cover some Oscar bait. 2009's The Soloist that has all the makings of an awards season darling: two stars at the height of their power with Robert Downey Jr. an Jamie Foxx, an award winning director and screen writer and a sappy true story. And yet, it feels like a parody.  We discuss how cruelly this movie treats the unhoused community it seemingly wants to uplift, Jamie's crazy hairline and outfits, and how movies like this seek to win awards through Black pain.  Announcement: We are finally starting out book club this April! Our first book will be Eve Ewing's Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism. We will be livestreaming our discussion on IG (@whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod) on April 27th so stay tuned and we hope to see you then!

Just Cause
Never in the history of this show has a movie caught Jordan and Cameron so off guard. 1994's Just Cause isn't just a wildly racist movie, it actually thinks it's doing the work...until it decides the work is too hard and creates a cartoonishly villainous Black character with the craziest plan we've ever seen in a movie.  Starring Sean Connery, Laurence Fishburne, Blair Underwood, Ruby Dee, Scarlett Johansson, Ed Wood and somehow more, it follows all the usual twist and turns of your usual 90's thriller until it makes the hardest left turn into "actually this Black man is a psycho and the police were right to beat and castrate him." Yes, you read that right.  Anyways, we're chugging along and getting ready to launch our book and film clubs coming up this month. Join us on our Discord and Instagram (@whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod) to learn more.  We'll be trying to organize more as the year goes on, but we hope everyone is hanging in there.  We love you and we've got you!

Dead Bang
We're back with one from the vaults! Audio on Jordan's end wasn't the best (computer was on deaths door) but the episode itself is a banger...or should we say a Dead Bang... Anyways, this movie almost feels like a spiritual prequel to another movie we've done, Rebel Ridge, as this time it's Don Johnson going after white supremacist. You can almost imagine his character retiring to the south and becoming a small time racist sheriff if you squint.  We talk about the bait and switch trailer, the choice to set this at Christmas, and if we can properly rank caucacity anymore given that it's at its peak almost daily now.  Happy Black History Month! Even though its almost over we will be starting up both are book club and film club at the end of this month so stay tuned for that. Follow us on IG and TikTok at @whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod and hit us up at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com We'll be back next week as we begin to re-release our episodes that have aged out of the feed, starting with Green Book!

Nickel Boys
Finally we get to sit down and talk about one of the most acclaimed movies of 2024, Nickel Boys. Directed by RaMell Ross and based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book by Colson Whitehead, it's a stunning portrait of Black life and incredible piece of filmmaking.  We discuss the use of POV and how it forces empathy, our theater experiences, and the dreamlike qualities of the film.  Things are crazy and we hope you're doing okay. We have a couple of things in the works that will hopefully offer some escape and also help give focus. Follow us on @whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod on IG and TikTok for updates on Book Club and Film club as well as Patreon stuff.

Imperium (Feat. Brandon Collins)
We're kicking off the New Year with some absolute foolishness as we discuss the movie where Harry Potter goes undercover as a white supremacist. That's right, we're talking about 2016's Imperium and we're joined by the wonderful Brandon Collins of Medium Popcorn and Drunk Black History.  We ask why Daniel Radcliffe looks like he's  about to cry in every scene, if the movie understands the difference between all these white supremacist groups, and if the Black friend in the movie ever got a sorry for calling you a nigger at that klan march text.  Brandon is one of the best out there and he's got something special in the works for this year. His Drunk Black History show is doing some live dates coming up over the next few months and you won't want to miss it! Follow him at @americancollins on Twitter and go to https://www.frodoblackins.com/ to get tickets! And as always, check out Medium Popcorn wherever you get your podcast! We got big plans for the year, so stay tuned as we put everything together. Everyone out in L.A. stay safe, and we'll see you in two weeks!

Quigley Down Under (Feat. .Kristal Adams)
Did you ever think you were watching one movie and ended up seeing another? That's the horror our wonderful guest comedian and comic writer Kristal Adams faced, thinking she was going to watch Rescuers Down Under and instead having to sit through Quigley Down Under.  Kristal joins us to tell her harrowing tale as we break down Tom Selleck's last desperate attempt to make his Indiana Jones dreams come true. We discuss the inherit problems with the Western, Cameron shows off his Alan Rickman impression, and much more.  Kristal's comic Mutiny: Black Girl Magic is a must read! The second issue just wrapped on Kickstarter and you absolutely need to grab a copy when they drop. She's also co-owner of FairSquare Comics which publishes some amazing books that tell the kinds of stories we need more of. Find everything she has going on at @thedarkkristal on IG and TikTok.  We've got more episodes dropping soon, including our best of 2024 round ups and our annual Holiday episode. Election/Quincy Jones Tribute
Hello friends! We hope everyone has been hanging in. We ourselves had to take a little break following the election as well as for the Holidays, but we're back to finish the year out strong.  This particular episode was recorded the week of the election but we thought it might be best to let it sit for a bit, since we're sure many of you are also still getting your heads around everything. We give our thoughts as well as suggest ways to help going into next year.  We end with a celebration of the genius of Quincy Jones and his contributions to music, film, and culture.  We'll also be dropping another episode tomorrow along with our 2024 end of year special and holiday special later this month.  Be well and take care of each other and yourselves as we head into 2025.

Ghost Brigade (Feat. Justina Ireland)
Happy Halloween! As scary as the real world is, we figured everyone could use a break and a really dumb movie, so here's 1993's Ghost Brigade. Also known as Grey Knight, Killing Box, and The Lost Brigade this civil war zombie can't even get the "zombie" or "civil war" part right.  Joined by the one and only Justina Ireland (Amazing Spider-Man, Star Wars: The High Republic, Dread Nation) joins us to discuss Ray Wise's questionable relationship with his horse, Cynda Williams as the magical voodoo enslaved woman, and much more!  Justina is the first woman to work on a run of Amazing Spider-Man and you should absolutely pick it up on November 16th! Also check out her website for more books and info! And you can find us on all the socials (@whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod on IG and TikTok and @white_pod on Twitter) where we'll be dropping more fun stuff in the near future. The Adventures of Huck Finn (Feat Marcus Kwame Anderson and David F. Walker)
Ride with us down the Mississippi as we speak with the award winning duo of David F. Walker and Marcus Kwame Anderson about 1993's The Adventure of Huck Finn and more importantly their new graphic novel reimagining of Mark Twain's classic, Big Jim and The White Boy.  That's right, their new book shifts the perspective to Jim and gives more context to his life and story, literally what we talk about on the podcast each episode. We discuss the Disneyfication of slavery, how their new book fills in Jim's story, and so much more! You can buy Big Jim and The White Boy wherever books are sold! Preorder now or go to the store on October 15th and grab a copy! Maybe even check out one of these Black bookstores! You can find more of David's excellent work (like the incredible Bitter Root) at his website. Rebel Ridge
Special episode alert! Today we discuss the new Netflix film Rebel Ridge, very much the kind of movie that inverts our usual films. A movie about civil asset forfeiture doesn't sound too exciting, but there's a lot of good things to be found in this one.  All that said, we do have a few issues which leads to an interesting discussion about white filmmakers tackling Black stories, choices Black actors make in those roles, and more!  Check us out on all the social medias now! @whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod on IG and TikTok and @White_pod on Twitter.  We've got some great episodes coming your way soon, specifically a conversation with David F. Walker and Marcus Kwame Anderson, the duo behind the reimagined Huck Finn graphic novel Big Jim and The White Boy.

Bzzz bzz that's the sound of the... Beekepers? Joined by WPWSY All Star Julian Lyltle, we discuss the 2024 breakout hit The Beekeeper.  Jason Statham kicking ass in all his glory, but our real interest here is one Phlyicia Rashad. We wonder what makes this a lowkey savior film, if Jason Statham has ever made a truly bad movie, and much more.  Find Julian wherever you do your social media at @julianlytle and find us on the socials @white_pod on Twitter and at @whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod on IG and TikTok.  We'll back soon with a special episode on Rebel Ridge.

White People Won't Save You
Thunderstruck
And now, starting at white savior, from the university of "who the hell thought this was a good idea", 2014's Thunderstruck! Truly one of the most puzzling films of the 2010's, Thunderstruck is at once a movie that thought it would make sense to star the notoriously anti-social Kevin Durant but also decided that would be enough (it wasn't, it didn't even make a million at the box office).  We discuss why this kid didn't immediately declare for the NBA draft, who the best hoopers turned actors are, and how exactly did this literal child have a bathroom connected to his room.  Also, we're on all the socials now! Find us on TikTok and IG (whitepeoplewontsaveyou) and you can finally watch our live show from Caveat on Youtube  We'll bee back in two weeks with 2024's The Beekeeper!

The Landlord
Back together again! Cameron was in Baltimore for the week, so this episode was actually done in person, which was much needed because we had a lot to say on this one.  1970's The Landlord might sound good on paper (Hal Ashby, Bill Gunn, Louis Gossett Jr., Beau Bridges) but it plays out like some of the worst mishmash of hippie dreams and racial politics. A nepo baby buys a building in Harlem and...well... We discuss all the ways this went wrong as well upholding the sanctity of the third level of caucacity.  Youtube is being awful, but we're still trying to upload our live show so hopefully that will be everywhere soon! We also have some fun episodes and guests coming up in the next few weeks, starting with our next episode which covers 4 time Olympic gold medalist Kevin Durant's only foray into acting, Thunderstruck!

Unstoppable
We're back again with one of our greatest living actors, Denzel Washington. This time, it's the 2010 true train story, Unstoppable. Starring opposite Chris Pine along with Rosario Dawson, it's unbelievably the first of Denzel's train duology (Taking of Pelham 123 comes out the following year).  We get into the tricky savior move pulled in this one, the behind the scenes of how Denzel almost wasn't a part of this movie, and much more.  We're trying to figure out how to let Youtube let us upload our live show, they keep striking it for copyright. If you have any tips, hit us up at @white_pod or email us at Whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com  We'll be back in two weeks with one of our worst, 1970's The Landlord.

Stonewall (Feat. Jared McCullough)
Since everyday feels like an historical event in 2024, we decided to go back in time to another, 2015's Stonewall. Joined by Jared McCullough of the Black Geek Energy podcast, we discuss this disaster of a movie by the disaster movie master, Roland Emmerich.  Not only does this movie insert a white man into the middle of a historically Black and Latino uprising, not only does it reduce almost every queer character to stereotypes, not only does it manage to make Marasha P. Johnson a footnote in her own story, but it's has the caucacity to be over two hours with just 10 minutes of riot.  We talk about Emmerich's unbelievably tone deaf comments, how ugly the movie looks, and if we'll ever see the Blade movie.  Follow Black Geek Energy wherever you get your podcasts, and get caught up on everything from MCU to the latest anime, to D&D!  Also, this Friday we'll be releasing our Live episode on Youtube for those who missed it or just want to enjoy it again! Black and White (1999) Feat. Ben Passmore
Have you ever wanted to see Brooke Shields with dreads? Or here Elijah Wood call another white person "the true nigga"? Or watch 1990's Knicks shooting guard Allan Houston act? Well 1999's Black and White has all this and more. A truly baffling film, we take the long winding road through all of the insane moments of this film.. From one of craziest death scenes caught on film, to a lot of white people with questionable hair and accents, to what the hell all of Wu-Tang was doing in this movie.  Shout-out to Ben, a truly incredible artist and a good friend. His upcoming book Black Arms to Hold You Up about armed Black armed resistance is coming out next fall is, so be on the lookout for that. In the meantime, follow him on IG at @daygloayhole for more comics and conversation.  Our recorded live show is dropping on Youtube next week, so be on the lookout for that! And be sure to reach out to us at @white_pod on Twitter and at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com  We'll be back in two weeks with pod favorite Denzel Washington in one of two train movies in his filmography, 2010's Unstoppable!

Black and White (Feat. KT of For Your Reference)
Sometimes you gotta pop out and...you know the rest. We're so excited to welcome the amazing KT of the For Your Reference podcast to come on and discuss a savior from down under, 2002's Black and White. Did Cameron watch an entirely different film called Black and White? Yes. Did both have white people saying crazy things? Also yes. We discuss how the savior trope persists across countries, aboriginal representation in film, and the UK's sexiest man.  The For Your Reference pod is one of our faves, and should be one of yours too! From interviews to film reviews to just great conversations, please, please, check them out! Find them at @foryourefpod on the socials and check out their linktree.
