What a Lad
Colin Mansbridge- What a Lad

Rugby fans don't get much bigger than Colin Mansbridge! Who also just happens to be potentially the most successful CEO in all sport, having been the Crusaders CEO for the last 8 years which includes 7 Titles! However, for many it was the way he handled himself and the organisation last season when Crusaders missed the top 8 which was most impressive!

In this episode, Colin brings plenty of honesty, insight, and laughs and we go through some of the challenges and triumphs of being the boss!

Some parts that stood out in this one were...

Why he decided to ban the Cow Bells from the Super Rugby final

His take on Super Rugby and where it’s heading

Why he stood by Rob Penney and didn’t panic after the 2024 season

His love for rugby and in particular scrums

How he landed the CEO gig despite thinking he couldn’t run a rugby club

The decision behind the Crusaders rebrand

His thoughts on the new stadium

How he ended up on TikTok,

Who he reckons is the best player he’s ever CEO’d

And of course… his secret to locking down a good scrum

Colin brings the same level-headedness and wit to this chat that he brings to one of rugby’s most demanding jobs. If you want to understand what really goes on behind the curtain at the Crusaders, this one is for you.

What a Lad
Michael Fatialofa- Fan Favourite

For this weeks Fan Favourite episode we throw back to one of the most powerful episodes to date, I’ll always remember this episode for the feeling of goosebumps I got down my spine as Michael Fatialofa shared his incredible journey. Fats was one of the toughest players on the field I ever played with and he proved he was even tougher off it after a life changing tackle.

The former Auckland, Southland and Hurricanes star was over in the UK playing for Worcester, when he was hit awkwardly in a tackle that caused him to be Paralysed from the neck down. He was told he will never walk again! From that moment his life had changed forever and hearing the battle he has gone through the last 3 years left me feeling inspired, sad and proud of what he has been able to achieve.

This episode is an awesome reminder to be truely grateful for everything you have in your life, as like in Michaels case it can literally be taken away from you overnight. I'm so grateful to Fat's for coming on What a Lad and speaking so openly about his journey, it is one of the most powerful and inspiring episodes ever!

What a Lad
Scott Waldrom- What a Lad

This one has it all — Scott Waldrom, one of the most explosive loose forwards to play the game, jumps on for an absolute ripper of a chat and does not hold back. From growing up as a rugby super fan idolising his hero’s to playing with legends like Jonah Lomu, Jerry Collins, Christian Cullen and Justin Marshall, to getting dropped from Sevens after a scrap in Lower Hutt, Scooters career is full of highs, lows, and unreal yarns.

We talk about:

  • His early days which involved plenty of battles with younger brother Thomas Waldrom
  • Debuting with Jonah Lomu and being starstruck in training
  • Getting told he was too small for NPC and proving everyone wrong
  • National Nude Day and bar vouchers
  • Being told his foot injury meant his rugby career was over — and then making it back
  • Getting named in the All Blacks squad and wondering if he belonged
  • The brutal truth about injuries, pressure, drinking culture, and bouncing back
  • Coaching with the NZ Sevens, a scary health scare and life after footy

Honest, hilarious, and full of insight — this one’s got everything. A top man with a stack of stories. Scooter Waldrom is an absolute lad!

What a Lad
Marty Banks- What a Lad

Marty Banks was a cult hero, fans loved him. He looked like your average kiwi bloke, tall, low muscle mass and ran a distinctive curly mop. On the field he was a point scoring machine, he kicked goals from everywhere and made a habit of scoring long range tries which his deceptive pace.

That's the Marty we all knew from the screen. The Marty you'll hear from in this episode is the one who struggled with self confidence, the one who battled through serious injury pain and the one who has had his challenges transitioning into post footy.

Marty played all around the world and experienced so much from the game, having played in Russia, Italy, Japan, Refton, Nelson, Wellington and Dunedin. He's someone who always enjoyed a good time and never took himself to seriously, he even famously chopped a beer a fan threw at him before kicking a conversion to beat Taranaki!

He's definitely a massive lad so it was awesome to get him on What a Lad again.

What a Lad
Mark Stafford- Fan Favourite

We got back to an early fan favourite for this one with the great Mark Stafford!

The beauty of a podcast, you think you know someone well, then you sit with them on the podcast and you are absolutely blown away with their story. That is exactly how this episode with the great man Mark Stafford aka Staffy went.

Staffy has had an incredible journey to become the face of the TAB and the face of sport here in NZ but he certainly had a few bumps along the way. He shares some mind blowing stories in this episode including one how he died in a car crash but was brought back to life, in an event that ended his rugby career.

Staffy also gives some unreal insight in to what goes on behind the scenes at the tab and some unbelievable match fixing stories.

I loved this episode as it has a bit of everything in it and you can hear what a genuinely great lad Staffy is!

If you enjoy this episode as always please share it, this is a great one to share with anyone who is having a tough time.

What a Lad
Ioane Moananu- What a Lad

"Who's that new hooker at the Crusaders?" That's a question I'm hearing everywhere! Well in fact that man is Ioane Moananu and this is your chance to hear all about this great man in his first ever podcast. Now Ioane is incredibly humble and down to earth with a infectious laugh and cool story. From struggling to start for Counties Manakau to becoming arguably the form hooker of Super Rugby Ioane has had an incredible 12 months and the future is so bright for this great man.

This episode is a good reminder of when you play the game because you love it, the setbacks become easier to handle. Ioane has had plenty of challenging injuries early in his career and his mum recommended he shouldn't play anymore. That was never an option for Ioane who has a passion for the game.

It's also a reminder that as you move into the professional game, all those professional habits like recovery, sleep, nutrition all add up to make a massive difference in performance as we've seen with Ioane. So there is plenty of great advice in this one!

What a Lad
Scott Fuglistaller- What a Lad

Scott Fuglistaller was one of those champion team mates who did everything he could to be the best he could be. Unfortunately for the self acclaimed battler it was just never quite enough during his time at the Hurricanes competing with some pretty gifted athletes. He found a way though with moves to the Highlanders and then the Melbourne Rebels for him to become a regular Super Rugby starter and even captain. Sitting at a natural weight of around 80kgs, Scotty had to work so hard in the gym and with his diet to get to a weight that he could survive in the forwards at Super Rugby level. That came at a price, having 11 major surgeries during his career which took it's toll.

Some other parts that stood out for me in this one were..

The freedom Scotty had growing up which meant he grew up quick

How finding rugby was a turning point in his life

How he got from 80kg to 106kgs

His battles with self confidence and why he played his best under pressure

Why he moved to Japan and his time playing there

The struggle of life after rugby

And how he landed in his current role of helping retired players tranisition with the NZRPA.

As you'll hear Scotty has had a journey to get where he is, he's such a top man who will always put others first. Let me know what stood out for you in this one in the comments 👇

What a Lad
Charlie Gubb- Fan Favourite

Voted by you guys as the funniest episode ever!

Charlie Gubb is one of my all time favourite Warriors, not just because of the way he played on the field (even though he was an absolute animal) but more importantly because of how big of a lad that he is off it.

Gubby is the kind of team mate everyone loves to have in the team environment, loves a yarn, loves banter and just loves being around the lads. What I didn't realise before going into this podcast was the incredible journey Rugby League took him on!

Some of the interesting points were..

How he made his own highlights package and posted it to all the NRL clubs to get his first opportunity,

How he eventually worked his way into the Warriors and some classic stories from his time with them,

Why he moved to the Raiders (another crazy story that) followed by a move to the UK,

His battles with concussion and mental health,

Why he walked out on his contract in the UK,

and how he ended up starting up Wellingtons favourite porta loo company, Porta Kings.

This is without a doubt one of the funniest episodes so far. I found myself laughing away through this episode at the time and then in the edit. At the end of this episode you'll realise why everyone regards the great Charlie Gubb as one of the all time great team mates.

What a Lad
Taha Kemara- What a Lad

Taha Kemara is one of the most talented players in the country, he's fast, he's tough, he has an incredible skillset and more importantly he is a champion lad! For a 21 year old he has certainly experienced plenty of highs and lows from the game already some parts that stood out for me were..

- Growing up as a bigger sized kid which lead him to playing prop until college.

- His time at Hamilton Boys and the influence Nigel Hotham had on him

- Signing with the Crusaders for 3 years straight out of school

- How he's learnt from Richie Mo'unga, Aaron Cruden, Fergus Burke, James O'Connor, Stephen Donald in his first few years.

- He shares his memory from the moment he ruptured his bowel in the NPC

- The challenges involved with moving away from home

- What lies ahead and heaps more.

As you'll hear Taha is such a good human, hard to believe he is only 21! The potential he has is massive and I'm sure you will enjoy following his journey after hearing what a lad he is!

What a Lad
Robbie Flynn- Fans Favourite

After 5 years of What a Lad here is one of your selected favourite episodes with the great Robbie Flynn. Robbie is was widely regarded as one of the most talented players in the country but as we all know talent will only get you so far. The beauty of this episode is how honest Robbie is with what held him back from fulfilling his potential.

Robbie Flynn really should be a household name. He should be known as a rugby player who played at the highest level, with the natural talent that he had. Unfortunately, Robbie blew chance, after chance, after chance, as he struggled with self discipline and like many talented kids, he just kind of expected things to happen.

Hearing Robbie talk about his upbringing was incredible and to say he had a tough start to life would be a massive understatement. His love for rugby throughout the episode is clear and self confidence that he has is refreshing to hear.

I hope you all find this episode as inspiring and funny as I did and if you know a young talented athlete please send it on to them

What a Lad
Harry Wilson- What a Lad

Harry Wilson in 2023 missed out on the Wallabies RWC squad and was even struggling to make the Australia A side! Fast forward to 2024 and he is not just in the Wallabies but he's captaining his country to some of the best form they have been in for a long time. For the last 5 years Harry has been one of the best loose forwards in Super Rugby, where his work rate and collisions are up there with the best in the world! At only 25 years old, he's got a massive future still ahead of him!

Some other parts that stood out for me in this one were..

His mindset off a goal line dropout

Hearing his pathway to the Wallabies through Brothers Rugby Club and the Reds

Why he choose rugby over cricket

How he dealt with being in and out of the Wallabies for several years

Where he feels Australia Rugby is at right now

Why he decided to stay in Australia for 4 more years

And all of your questions!

As you'll hear Harry is the ultimate lad, just a good human who loves his footy and a good time. He's the type of guy you'd love to follow into a battle!

What a Lad
Kyle Preston- What a Lad

Kyle Preston is someone who deserves every bit of success he gets. His work ethic is unmatched and to hear his journey and how he has stuck to the plan even when he wasn't getting the rewards was truely inspiring. Having had one of the all time great Super Rugby debuts a few weeks ago scoring 3 tries, it was an opportunity for Kyle to show the world he was as ready as he knew he was. Whether it was doing body weight exercises till tears, kicking and passing at the park by himself for 2-3 a day or avoiding all junk food from a young age, Kyle has definitely made plenty of sacrifices to get his opportunity.

Some other parts that stood out for me were..

Where this drive for Kyle to train like he does come from

How he handled non selection for being "too small"

How hard the juggling of roofing and chasing the professional rugby dream is

Why he decided to move to the Crusaders over his hometown Hurricanes

Kyle clears the air on who is dad really is

And heaps more!

As you'll hear Kyle is committed to being the best player he can be and its clear that he has a huge future ahead of him. I hope you enjoy the episode and if you do please give it a share.

What a Lad
Christian Lio-Willie- What a Lad

The fact that Christian Lio-Willie is a qualified dentist still blows my mind! Almost every player I have spoken to has said it's too hard to juggle both but this man has done it! How he has got to this point has been some effort, juggling huge days of study while playing professional rugby, he mentions he had to plan every minute of the day.

Having focused on his study straight out of school after a recommendation from his mum, Christian felt like he may have missed the boat on his rugby career as his peers all started making the teams. After an outstanding club season and then a very impressive debut for Otago, he'd done enough to impressed Razor to get him up to the Crusaders. A few years later after a couple of outstanding seasons for the Crusaders he was called up as an injury replacement into the All Blacks.

This episode was inspiring hearing how hard Christian hustled to set himself up to succeed not just on the field but off it. He speaks openly about the struggles and has plenty of good yarns. If you enjoy this episode or there is a young player out there trying to juggle sport and study, please share it on to them.

What a Lad
Morgan Mitchell- What a Lad

Get ready for one of the most inspiring episodes yet with the legendary lad Morgan Mitchell. Born deaf, Morgan’s journey to becoming a professional rugby player was never going to be easy. Although he was an absolute beast on the rugby field from a young age, he was always told that he would never be able to play professional rugby. Thankfully the man who is known for his stubbornness was not having a bar of it and did manage to debut for his beloved Southland stags in 2014. He has since gone on to play over 50 games for the Stags as well as playing overseas with the Toronto Arrows

Kamaishi Seawaves and Houston SaberCats.

This story is a great one about never giving up on your dreams and a great reminder of some of the obstacles you can overcome when you put your mind to it. Morgy is such a champion, a very funny man and like his brother Brayden can tell a hell of a yarn. It was an honour to be the first podcast to share Morgans journey and if you enjoy this episode then I ask if you could please like the video and let me know what you enjoyed about this one in the comments.

What a Lad
Jack Mesley- What a Lad

With Super Rugby just around the corner, who better to talk to than the Super Rugby CEO Jack Mesley. The fact that Jack was keen to come on What a Lad and share his very honest thoughts on the game and where it is heading, is proof that this man will do what he can to grow the game.

Transparency was a big part of what Jack wants to see going forward and he certainly leading the way with how open he was around the challenges Super Rugby is facing but also some great ideas he has around the opportunities we have in the game. We speak about the highly anticipated fantasy rugby game that was be live for the 2025 Super Rugby season which will be an absolute game changer.

I left this conversation very exciting about the 2025 Super Rugby season, I do believe it will be one of the best yet and I was also left excited about where the competition and the game is heading. Jack will be an outstanding addition to the competition, he's a passionate rugby man who is a massive lad and I'm sure you'll enjoy this insight.

What a Lad
Tom Walsh- What a Lad

Tom Walsh has been one of the best shot-putters in the world for the last decade so it was an honour to get him on What a Lad for this one.

Plenty of people have suggested over the years to get him on and I can see why, he isn’t just good at what he does but he’s a massive lad with an incredible mindset which has seen him win Gold Medals at the World Champs (outdoor and indoor) and the Commonwealth games while twice picking up a Bronze at the Olympics

Some parts that stood out for me were..

How he is sometimes awkwardly mistaken for the great Joe Moody.

Growing up with Dyslexia and the challenges that came with that.

His upbringing in all sports, a rugby no8, cricket wizard and shot put beast.

How he ended up in shot-put and the unique lifestyle of a shot-putter

Why he kept throwing at this years Olympics even with a torn abductor

As well as plenty of great advice for everyone!

As you’ll hear Tom Walsh is a very likeable character, who has had an incredible career to date and the best thing is that it is not over yet. Hearing the mindset that Tom has, I've got no doubt there's more success to come for this great New Zealanders.

What a Lad
Brayden Mitchell- What a Lad

Everyone who has played with Brayden Mitchell will testify that he is one of the greatest lads to play the game, he was a champion team mate on and off the field, who loved a good time and could always back it up when on the pitch. Some of the stories and reflections that the man they call Scratcher has in this episode were incredible to hear. He was so honest, held back nothing and can tell a seriously good yarn!

Some bits that stood out for me in this one were...

How hard the struggle of retiring from rugby due to a neck injury was for him

His relationship with gambling throughout his career

Getting his first contract straight out of school.

Dealing with a lack of confidence in himself

His relationship with alcohol during his career and during the transition post footy

Dealing with injuries and his regret in how he attacked his rehab

Becoming the Stags captain and the pressure involved with that

And honestly some of the best behind the scene stories of a professional rugby player you will hear.

I've got so much time for Scratcher, just a champion human who played the game for enjoyment and he certainly did that! If you enjoy this episode please give it a share and let me know what stood out for you in the comments.

What a Lad
Mark Nawaqanitawase- What a Lad

Mark Nawaqanitawase has had one of the most eventful 12 months in sport! Firstly heading to the Rugby World Cup with the Wallabies before changing code to the 7’s format of the game for the Paris Olympics, where he narrowly missed out on a medal. He then changed codes again, this time to the 13 man game playing NRL for the Sydney Rooster to cap off what was an incredible 12 months.

What stood out for me in this one was..

How his Fijian heritage plays a significant role in his identity and sports career.

He emphasizes the importance of having fun while playing sports.

How his Waratahs debut in Super Rugby was a dream come true for him.

What it was like debuting for the Wallabies.

How his transition to the Aus 7s team was a rewarding challenge for him.

Why he moved to the Roosters.

Adjusting to NRL required learning new rules and strategies.

All the questions you want to know, fastest player, hardest to tackle etc!

And heaps more!

Mark is one of those players who is just a joy to watch whatever game he is playing, the way he can leap in the air, beat defenders and score tries! You’ll also learn in this episode that he is a massive lad, such a likeable character who has a huge future ahead of him.
