S1 E3 A Shadow In The Night
Saddle up for another round of Watcher Texas Ranger, where hosts James Hauser, Clint Busch, and Ryan Mattila dive headfirst into the roundhouse-kicking, Stetson-wearing world of Walker, Texas Ranger! We’re riffing scene-by-scene through the 90s action juggernaut with enough humor to make even Chuck Norris crack a smile (maybe). This week, we’re breaking down Season 1, Episode 3, "A Shadow in the Night," where East meets West in a martial arts showdown that’s equal parts epic and absurd. Get ready for Yakuza drama, old friendships, and more slow-motion kicks than you can shake a dojo at! Episode Details Show: Walker, Texas Ranger Episode Title: A Shadow in the Night (Season 1, Episode 3, sometimes listed as Episode 4 in syndication due to the pilot split) Original Air Date: May 1, 1993 Runtime: 46 minutes Director: Alexander Singer Writers: Albert S. Ruddy, Leslie Greif, Paul Haggis, Christopher Canaan, J. Michael Straczynski Cast: Chuck Norris as Cordell Walker Clarence Gilyard Jr. as James "Jimmy" Trivette Sheree J. Wilson as Alexandra "Alex" Cahill Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman as Uncle Ray Firewalker James Drury as Ranger Captain Tom Price Andrew Robinson as Congressman Leo Cabe Danny Kamekona as Mitsua Usagi Aki Aleong as Yoshihito "Yoshi" Sakai John S. Davies as Karl Jaeker Episode Synopsis In "A Shadow in the Night," Cordell Walker faces a blast from his martial arts past when his old friend Yoshihito "Yoshi" Sakai (Aki Aleong), trained under the same Sakai-Ryu karate master, rolls into Dallas with ties to the Yakuza. The trouble starts in Tokyo, where Congressman Leo Cabe’s assistant, Karl Jaeker (John S. Davies), murders Yakuza boss Mitsua Usagi (Danny Kamekona) and steals priceless Japanese artwork. Now, the Yakuza are after Cabe, and Walker and Trivette are assigned to protect him. But Cabe’s hiding something, and Yoshi’s mission to avenge his boss puts him on a collision course with Walker. Expect a tense showdown with judo throws, arm locks, and Walker’s signature moral compass pointing due justice. Also, this is the last appearance of Ranger Captain Tom Price (James Drury), who exits the series without so much as a goodbye note. The episode’s martial arts fight between Walker and Yoshi is a highlight, praised for its well-choreographed judo throws and arm locks, a step up from the usual punch-fest. Andrew Robinson, who plays Congressman Leo Cabe, is known for villainous roles, including the creepy Scorpio in Dirty Harry. His shifty politician vibe here is peak 90s bad guy. This was the final episode of the shortened first season, cut to three episodes due to Cannon Pictures’ financial collapse. The original plan was for 13 episodes, but the budget said, “Not today, Ranger.” Aki Aleong’s character, Yoshi, brings a rare personal connection to Walker’s past, hinting at his pre-Ranger days as a martial arts student. Did Walker ever smile back then? Doubtful. The episode’s title, “A Shadow in the Night,” evokes the stealthy Yakuza hitman vibe and Yoshi’s conflicted loyalty, torn between friendship and duty. Stream “A Shadow in the Night” on Peacock, Hulu, or buy it on Fandango at Home (Vudu) for $1.99. For collectors, the Walker, Texas Ranger: The Complete Collection DVD set has you covered. Together, they uncover a plot by ex-CIA agent Orson Wade (Marshall R. Teague) to rob four Dallas banks simultaneously. We’re diving scene-by-scene into the 90s action classic with our signature blend of laughs, nostalgia, and questionable cowboy impressions. This week, we tackle Season 1, Episode 2, "Borderline," where Cordell Walker protects Alex from a vengeful ex-sheriff with a serious grudge. Grab your Stetson and brace for some Texas-sized justice! Show: Walker, Texas Ranger Episode Title: Borderline (Season 1, Episode 2, sometimes listed as Episode 3 in syndication due to the pilot split) Original Air Date: April 24, 1993 Runtime: 46 minutes Director: Michael Vejar Writers: Albert S. Ruddy, Leslie Greif, Paul Haggis, Christopher Canaan, Robin Madden Cast: Chuck Norris as Cordell Walker Clarence Gilyard Jr. as James "Jimmy" Trivette Sheree J. Wilson as Assistant D.A. Alex Cahill Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman as Uncle Ray Firewalker Leon Rippy as Dewey Baker Mark Walters as Duane Hopkins Ray Lykins as Benny Carl Devlin In "Borderline," Cordell Walker is breaking in his new partner, Jimmy Trivette, while facing a darker threat: ex-sheriff Dewey Baker (Leon Rippy), fresh out of prison and itching for revenge against Assistant D.A. Alex Cahill, who put him behind bars for beating suspects. Baker’s vendetta starts with creepy mind games—stalking Alex, breaking into her apartment, leaving pervy tokens, and even killing her horse, Amber. He uses his former cellmate, Duane Hopkins, as a proxy to throw Walker off the scent. When Baker kidnaps Alex and takes her to a remote cabin, Walker and Trivette must track them down for a classic Walker showdown, complete with a satisfying beatdown. Oh, and Alex is also prosecuting a cop killer, Benny Carl Devlin, because apparently, she’s got no shortage of enemies. Leon Rippy’s portrayal of Dewey Baker is a standout, with his spiky hair and messed-up teeth adding to the creep factor. He returns in later episodes ("Days Past" in 1997 and the 2001 series finale) as different characters. A memorable quote: When Tim boasts about his green belt in judo to protect Alex, Walker deadpans, “Green? Pretty color.” Savage. This episode was part of the shortened first season, cut to three episodes due to Cannon Pictures’ financial woes. The original plan was for 13 episodes, but funding dried up faster than a Texas creek in July. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
