Ep.11: Printing with the Printmaster; We Chat to Negative Thinking

We are BACK in 2025 with out first episode of the year, and we are delighted to be joined by Tim and Emily from Negative Thinking, in Bristol. We are fortunate to be just down the road from these guys so instead of just a normal podcast record, we decided to spend the day in the darkroom with them doing what they love and do best, printing.

We spoke about all things from analogue photography, the value in printing your work, AI killing digital photography, and aliens and hieroglyphics...somehow.

Hope you enjoy the podcast.

LINKS WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO CLICK ON:

As you'll hear throughout the episode, we couldn't be bigger fans of Negative Thinking and what they do and offer the community.

You can check out what courses and workshops they've got on next by visiting their 'what's on' page.

Their incredible Experimental Darkroom Course begins again soon for a new term, and you can book your place here.

Ep.9: Jon Tonks on documentary photography and pub snacks

Ep.9: Jon Tonks on documentary photography and pub snacks

On this episode we've been joined by Bath-based photographer, and a real favourite photographer of ours, Jon Tonks.

We speak to Jon about his introduction to working in photography, which started in the lesser-seen-these-days world of press photography; his almost seamless transition into the longer form bodies of work and documentary photography and trying to find that constant balance between personal projects and commercial work.

We speak to Jon about his current project; a year long documentation of sustainable fishing, commissioned by Martin Parr Foundation for We Feed The UK by The Gaia Foundation. A body of work focused on bringing attention to the positive stories of people nourishing the country in a sustainable way.

This work will then go on exhibition at the Martin Parr Foundation in 2025. You can pledge to support the project here, and by donating £100 you'll receive a signed limited edition print from the project.

You can check out some of Jon's work, such as his project 'For Men Who Would Be King' over on his website, and you can follow some of his latest updates over on his Instagram.

As always, we're keen to hear your thoughts, and if you've got any questions for us that we can answer on a future episode, send them in to us at voicenotespodcast@jackslab.co.

This episode was hosted by Jack Ford, Rosie Warwick and Jack Tolhurst, and featured our guest Jon Tonks.

Ep.8: Photography as an artistic tool, and are photos made to be seen? With guest Alice Farrington

This week we've been joined by lab favourite, good friend and co-founder of Girls Camera Club, Alice Farrington.

With Alice's largely art-based background, we discuss how she uses photography as a tool to express herself within her art, and whether photography should be made to be seen.

You can check out Alice on Instagram, and Girls' Camera Club on Instagram also. Girls Camera Club is a collective for women and non-binary photographers. They have their second exhibition launching at the end of July, a collection of some ongoing work, at Kitform @ Jamaica St. Studios in Stokes Croft, Bristol.

Jamaica St. Studios are also currently fundraising in order to be able to bring the ownership of the studios back to the community, you can check out the crowdfunder here.

In our FOURTH episode, we get stuck in to a juicy one, discussing all things cameras, our G.A.S (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) issues and why we can't help but pickup and collect new cameras.

Do the best cameras make the best photographers? Is it important to try different cameras to find the one(s) you love? And will Jack (JT) ever tell us about his 4x5 camera?!

As always, we're keen to hear your thoughts, and if you've got any questions for us that we can answer on a future episode, send them in to us at voicenotespodcast@jackslab.co.

We do our first draw for our collective lab challenge PUSH IT REEL GOOD, where our goal is to dispel some myths around pushing and pulling film and to create a bit of a catalogue of pushed film.

As always, we're keen to hear your thoughts. What are YOUR goals or challenges for 2024? Drop us an email and let us know, or if you've got any questions for us that we can answer on a future episode, send them in to us at voicenotespodcast@jackslab.co.

In this episode we dive deep into one of the biggest questions in photography, "film vs. digital". We ask ourselves why we shoot on both formats, the practical and creative applications of both and our recommendations to photographers old and new.

We also cover some recent news from the industry, focused largely on some information surrounding new cameras to be produced by some of analogue photography's most popular and historic names.
