Video Game Book Club is back with the last game of 2024!! Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey this year. We really really appreciate it. We're going to have 12 new games to play this year and we couldn't be more excited. Join the club and tell your friends to join too! In this episode Ben and JP discuss the casual spooky game that is Dredge. This game looks like a casual fishing simulator at first, but once you start dredging the depths you find some unsettling truths. The ending of the game hits like a truck and is truly terrifying. We talk about all the different fishing minigames, the powers you unlock, every island you visit, and we recap the whole story of the game... as well as its secret ending. JP was absolutely locked in while playing the game and tried to be a completionist. He absolutely loved the game and also wanted to catch 'em all (fish and pokemon). Ben made sure to let us know he tucked his fisherman in bed at 10:00pm every single night. In this episode Ben and JP discuss the wild ride that is Nier Automata. This game asks the player to look at life through a different lens. Everything is meaningless and androids hates machines or something. It's philosophical, it's existential, it has tons of fetch quests, and the music is insane. We recap the stories of Nier, talk about our favorite areas, weapons, builds and the meaning of life.
JP mowed down every single machine he encountered with 0 remorse. He felt the game was strong in some aspects but extremely weak in others. Ben struggles to understand his feelings as he revisits one of his most beloved videogames of all time.

In this episode Ben and JP discuss the incredibly creative game that is The Plucky Squire. This game felt like lightning in a bottle at times, and frustrating at others. The game is definitely one of the best looking ones of the year, it's well narrated, and it has some great boss fights.
JP felt the 3D areas were where the game shone the brightest. Ben felt the rhythm aspects of the game was right up his alley (he's a rhythm king).

In this episode Ben and JP discuss the masterpiece that is Nine Sols. This game took us by storm and we absolutely loved every second of it. It's challenging, it's gorgeous, it's gruesome and it sounds fantastic. We talk about our builds, our favorite areas/bosses/characters and of course the infamous final boss fight.
JP felt super in tune with the game's movement and combat mechanics. Ben is still having nightmares about Eigong's third phase.

We talk about every celestial being we encountered, how we went about solving the puzzles, and what we both learned of our existence because of this game.
