Movie adaptations of videogames have a fairly infamous reputation for being...well, let's be honest, terrible. But surely an entire genre can't be written off? Of the hundreds made so far, there must be a few good ones, right? Join hosts Jamie and Rory as they suffer through the seemingly endless sea of bad videogame movies in search of the few diamonds in the rough. There will be laughs, tears (mostly from Jamie) and nerdy details nobody could possibly care about!

Let us suffer through these terrible movies, so you don't have to!

Retro: Need For Speed
One of the most divisive movies the VGMP team have ever covered, Need For Speed starts Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) and Michael Keaton (Batman). One of Rory's favourite movies, the boys are giving this one a second chance to see if Rory can convince Jamie of the movie's merits.

Retro: Resident Evil: Apocalypse
The sequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's 2002 Resident Evil movie is based loosely on the 3rd videogame in the franchise and sees Alice (Milla Jovovich) team up with Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) to try and save a young girl from the clutches of the Umbrella Corporation as Raccoon City falls to the zombie outbreak. Things are further complicated however by a relentless pursuer out to stop them at any cost; the Nemesis.

Based on the hit indie game, Netflix produced 3 seasons of "The Cuphead Show." Embracing a classical animation style that reminds one of the old Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons and now Jamie and Rory are going to sit down and talk about them!

Retro: Pokemon: The First Movie
The boys turn back the clock to review the first Pokemon Movie. This film was a hype machine back in the day, with Avengers Endgame levels of excitement in the run up to its release. Introducing fans to Pokemon #151 Mew and pitting him against the ominous Mewtwo, the movie promised to be a bout that would rock fans of the popular anime. Did the film live up to expectations and how does it stack up all of these years later?

Mortal Kombat (2021)

Retro: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
The first major motion picture outing of the Final Fantasy franchise is one of the most infamous flops in history, effectively killing Square and forcing them to merge to survive. With its sci-fi setting and alien ghosts, the film doesn't feel too much like the games on which it is based. Despite that, how does the film stand up?

Retro: Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright
Infamous Japanese director Takashi Miike takes a crack at adapting the popular Capcom franchise "Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright" to the big screen. Blending live action filmmaking with the bombastic characters usually found in Japanese anime, the result is certainly interesting to say the least. But does it make for a good movie? Listen to find out!

Retro: Fatal Frame
Based on the popular horror franchise known as Fatal Frame (also known as Project Zero in some territories), this is one of the better movies we have reviewed on VGMP. A simple little horror movie, the simplicity is the key strength of Fatal Frame.

Retro: Forbidden Siren
This week's episode of VGMP takes us to Japan for this adaptation of the cult survival horror franchise. This low budget horror has an indie feel that has a patchy result. What works in the film and what falls flat? Tune in to find out!

Retro: Power Stone
Capcom's Dreamcast arcade fighter has become somewhat of a cult classic over the years, but not many know that there was a full anime adaptation of the game! Jamie and Rory have sat down to watch a few episodes, but is there enough story in the arcade style game to stretch over a full series?

Retro: Free Guy
We continue to dig into the VGMP vaults and bring you re-edited and polished up versions of previous episodes. This week we're talking about the Ryan Reynolds vehicle Free Guy! Originally made by Fox but eventually obtained by Disney when they brought out 20th Century Fox, Free Guy has an intriguing premise; what if an NPC character in a videogame gained sentience? Does the film explore this concept to its full potential? Will Ryan Reynolds finally step out of his snark-filled Deadpool-esque comfort zone? There's only one way to find out...

Retro: Silent Hill - Revelation
Listeners will know that Jamie and Rory both enjoyed the 2006 Silent Hill movie quite a bit. Unfortunately this follow up isn't so fondly remembered. Featuring a confused plot and an ill-advised pre-ponderance with 3D, Silent Hill: Revelation might be one of the biggest sequel downgrades of all time.

Retro: Mortal Kombat - Annihilation
Whilst the original Mortal Kombat movie might be bad, it does have a certain degree of cheesy, nostalgic charm baked into it. Can the same be said, however, for the 1997 sequel; "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation"?

Retro: Joysticks
An odd entry in the VGMP canon this week; from 1983, Joysticks asks the question "what if Porky's but in an arcade?" This 80s sex comedy features a group of Pac-Man addicts, some hapless nerds who just want to play their games in peace and, of course, parents gripped by a "think about the children" panic. The question however, is does any of it coalesce into a watchable movie? Listen to find out!

As we continue through 2025 we're releasing more of our back catalogue from before VGMP came onto the Impala network. Today we're talking about this 1990s film from the master of body-horror David Cronenberg. Starring Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh along with appearances from Christopher Ecclestone, Willem Dafoe and Callum Keith-Rennie, this film revolves around a "biological" videogame console that is played by being plugged directly into the spine of the user. As you can probably imagine, things don't go smoothly.

January is well known as somewhat of a graveyard month when it comes to movie releases and in keeping with that tradition we're re-releasing our episode on Gamebox 1.0, one of the worst movies we have ever reviewed on the show. Nate Richert (Sabrina The Teenage Witch) stars as a videogame tester with a troubled past who is enlisted to test a brand new gaming console that can tap into the actual memories of the player.
