In Kenya we are observing more and more children leaving home later - in their late twenties and beyond. This is partially driven by the amount of time taken to finish school and properly establish oneself financially. But how do parents relate with children who are legally adult, but still live at home? Catherine Waiyaki shares her experience as a young parent and how it drove her to invest in learning and later helping others learn, how to parent effectively. She shares practical wisdom to help you navigate the years when your child is no longer a child.
Catherine can be reached on cathywaiyaki@gmail.com.

Parents are never just parents, or only parents. They are also running a business, or working a job. They are siblings and caregivers to their parents. They are neighbours and team members somewhere. Their lives are full of action. That's why they cannot afford to spend time trying to kill a mosquito rather than sleeping and rejuvenating themselves for the next meaningful activity.
Today's podcast talks about the little things that add up to big things and so take us away from the meaningful work we do as parents.

Eliud Kipchoge's sub 2 hour marathon run has gone into the history books. While parenting is not a race, there are parallels and lessons that we can draw from Kipchoge's run. Vision, focus , preparation, support, pace setters, and, most importantly, running the race. Today's podcast draws inspiration from this event.

That means you can rewrite that story. What is the systemic story that drives your parenting decisions? How are you writing your children's story? As early as age 3, children can start learning financial management. Prepare a shopping list, take them to the market with you to demonstrate planning. By age 6, they can learn how to save, and begin to practice delayed gratification as they wait to build up enough funds to pay for something they want. What financial habits and values are you teaching your child?

I think most people know at some level or other that setting goals can help them achieve success. Knowing how doesn’t translate to doing though. Mostly, though, setting and achieving goals is fearsome because it implies accountability. Once you set a goal you are saying to yourself that its up to you to achieve that goal, and that can be frightening. If today you tell yourself that your vison for your child is bigger than your fear of failure you have already made a big stride in the right direction.

Rules should be necessary, fair, clear and enforceable. If it meets the first three but is not enforceable, think about having a guideline instead. Also consider the frequency and intensity or impact of the problem behaviour you are trying to address. Don't create rules for everything.

Rules establish a firm foundation for a discipline plan, A good rule is not a hope, an expectation or a demand. It clearly states what behaviour or action is required, and outlines the consequences of not observing the rule.

For you to bleed on someone they must be close. Who gets closer to you than your children? Wounds can be physical, external and visible, or physical, internal and invisible. They could also be emotional, and more difficult to put a finger on.
Many wounds need a helping hand to clean and close. And if you have been carrying one around for many years, it probably needs more help to clean and close. So why not reach out, and get that bleeding to stop? It will help your child, but the greatest beneficiary is you.

Questions are children’s way of understanding the world around them. The questions your children ask can give you insight into their fears, challenges, and developmental understanding. They can also spark great conversations that build trust. If you are struggling with answering your children’s questions reflect on what the root cause is. Children’s questions can trigger feelings of helplessness or low self esteem if that was your experience growing up.

The distancing that is necessary for independence and autonomy to develop for Twos and Teens can be painful. Just when your kids are pushing you away the hardest is when it is most important for you to reassure them that you aren’t going anywhere. It isn’t easy, and, often, you’re feeling hurt, scared and helpless too. And sometimes, the behaviour of your twos and teens sets off triggers that result in your own ‘bad behaviour’.

There are many stories of people who tried and failed many times before they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Such stories are powerful for encouraging your child. Still, the most powerful hero or heroine is yourself, and your example of triumph over failure.

Our triggers are usually rooted in experiences we had as children, and which experiences we could not deal with sufficiently at that time. Many things that parents do, and which can lead to undesirable consequences for their children, are reactions to triggers. Identify those triggers and you could stop certain unintended behaviours.
